The Aces are fresh off a four-game series split at Sacramento while El Paso just jumped Las Vegas for first place in the Pacific South after winning three of four over the 51s at Cashman Field. Right-hander Allen Webster starts for Reno against El Paso right-hander Casey Kelly. Thursday’s Game: The Aces received another strong outing from right-hander Jhoulys Chacin in a 9-5 win last night over Sacramento. Reno grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second on a sacrifice fly by Matt Pagnozzi, but River Cats shortstop Carlos Triunfel tied the game with a two-out RBI single in the bottom half. Peter O’Brien then launched his second homer in as many days with a two-out, two-run shot out of Raley Field in the third to put the Aces on top for good. Chacin faced the minimum in every inning except the second, and in total, lasted seven innings while allowing just one earned run on four hits. The Aces broke the game open in the sixth with a six-run frame. A ground-rule double by Pagnozzi scored Reno’s fourth run of the night before Chacin lined a run-scoring single to left to make it 5-1. After Mike Freeman tallied another run with a fielder’s choice, Jamie Romak extended Reno’s lead to six with an RBI single. O’Brien then smashed a two-run double to the left-field wall, giving him four RBI for the game and the Aces a 9-1 lead. O’Brien - who tripled in the second and scored on Pagnozzi’s sacrifice fly - struck out swinging in the eighth in his attempt to hit for the cycle. Sacramento’s Jarrett Parker blasted a grand slam off Brett Shankin in the ninth, but Shankin retired the next three batters, two on punchouts to seal the victory. Chacin improved to 6-3 in the effort. Casey Kelly: 25-year-old Casey Kelly starts for the Chihuahuas in game one of the series. In three games (two starts) for El Paso, the right-hander is 1-1 with a 5.06 ERA (6 ER in 10 2/3 IP). He has pitched primarily for Double-A San Antonio this year, going 1-8 with a 4.94 ERA in 27 games (14 starts). Kelly owns a 24-27 record and a 3.93 ERA in 107 games (93 starts) over his Minor League career. He made his Major League debut on August 27, 2012 for San Diego, and in six starts, went 2-3 with a 6.21 ERA. Kelly originally signed a letter of intent to play quarterback at the University of Ten- nessee but instead focused on baseball full-time. He was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the first round (30th overall) of the 2008 MLB June Amateur Draft out of Sarasota (Fla.) High School. On Dec. 6, 2010, Kelly was traded from the Red Sox with current-Cub Anthony Rizzo and outfielders Reymond Fuentes and Eric Patterson to the Padres in exchange for current-Dodger Adrian Gonzalez. Casey is the son of nine-year Major Leaguer Pat Kelly. Century Mark: Peter O’Brien became the first player in Aces history to record 100 RBI in a single season with his four- RBI performance last night at Sacramento. O’Brien has 101 RBI for the season, two ahead of teammate Jamie Romak and eight ahead of Nick Evans. The trio sits 2-3-4 in the Pacific Coast League behind Fresno’s Matt Duffy who leads the league with 102. Five Guys: Mike Freeman (4th, .319) and Danny Worth (5th, .317) are in the top 5 in batting average in the PCL. Omaha’s Jose Martinez is leading the league with a .386 clip. Playing Spoiler: Unlike last year, the final series of the season involving the Aces does not have playoff implications for both teams. Last year, the Aces took four of five games at Sacramento to win the Pacific Northern title. Fresno clinched the Pacific Northern crown in mid-August this year, but the Grizzlies still do not know their first-round opponent. Reno’s final 2015 opponent, El Paso, currently leads the Pacific Southern Division by one-half game over Las Vegas. Fresno will either have El Paso or Las Vegas first round, depending on this weekend’s results. The 51s have a four-game set with Tacoma while the Aces and Chihuahuas meet for five games in four days. All-PCL Squad: Two Aces, Peter O’Brien and Jamie Romak, were named to the All-PCL team announced Monday. O’Brien was named as one of the three outfielders, and Romak was listed as the PCL’s designated hitter. Reno was joined by El Paso as the only teams in the PCL with multiple players on the squad. O’Brien and Romak were also named to the PCL mid-season All-Star team, in addition to their participation in the Triple-A Home Run Derby. O’Brien and Romak’s naming to the All-PCL team marks the fourth time in seven years that two or more Aces have made the team. Sacking Sac-town: The Aces won the season series over the River Cats, 10-6, in large part because of Reno’s first-ever four-game sweep completed at Raley Field from June 18-21. The Aces clinched their first season-series win with Tuesday’s victory over Sacramento for the first time since the Aces’ inaugural 2009 campaign when they finished 10-6 against the then-Oakland Athletics affiliated River Cats. Total Bases Race: Peter O’Brien leads teammate Jamie Romak for most total bases in the PCL. O’Brien racked up nine total bases last night and has 260 to Romak’s 258. Nick Evans isn’t far behind, either, as he sits tied for fourth at 243 with Nashville’s Joey Wendle. Nashville’s Jason Pridie is currently third with 246. O’Brien’s 260 total bases currently ranks third in Aces single-season history, behind only Adam Eaton (2012) and Chris Owings (2013) who hold the record at 263. Romak Ranks: Romak is among PCL leaders in the following categories: home runs (26, T-1st), doubles (41, T-1st), to- tal bases (258, 2nd), runs (84, T-2nd), RBI (99, 3rd), slugging percentage (.548, 5th), PS (.911, 5th) and walks (60, T-6th). Not so Fast, My Friend: Through 139 games, the Aces have a league-low 41 stolen bases and are on pace for just 43 for the season. Last year, the Aces finished last in the PCL with 71 stolen bases. The two lowest stolen base team totals since Reno joined the league in 2009 are Las Vegas (50, 2009) and Sacramento (58, 2013). Owning on Offense: The Aces rank in the top four of many major offensive categories in the Pacific Coast League. The list includes: total bases (2,187, 1st), slugging percentage (.455, 1st), batting average (.287, 1st), doubles (328, 1st), OPS (.803, 1st), hits (1,378, 2nd), home runs (137, T-2nd) and runs scored (736, 4th).
