Superintendent’s Scoop District Updates School is rolling along very smoothly and quickly! Wow! I can’t believe it’s time to Christmas shop! The district has been busy ridding surplus items in order to remove the old preschool building. We are currently taking bids for anyone that would like to purchase the building. There is a furnace, cabinets, vanities, toilets, and other salvageable items. If you know of anyone interested, please have them contact me.

There have been several events already this year. The annual health fair, book fair, parent teacher conferences, ballgames and Title I night. Some activities your child might be interested in participating in include: The Chess Club, Drama Club, Art Club, Track and Scholar Bowl. Every student needs to feel successful in some type of event. Encourage your child to participate.

In Kindergarten, during second quarter, we are continuing to work on the letters and sounds of the alphabet, but with an emphasis on writing the capital letters. We are also working on ABC order, syllable awareness, rhyming, and blending three sounds to read words. The students are recognizing more high frequency words and reading some high frequency word books. The kindergarteners are listening to fall and holiday read alouds and making predictions, retelling the stories, making connections, and learning about various nonfiction topics, like owls. In math, we are learning about 3-dimensional shapes, counting to 50, and studying the numbers 11 through 19. We are measuring items in nonstandard ways with craft sticks and yarn. And very soon, we will be adding and subtracting to 10!

The LESS a toy does, the MORE a child learns This holiday, remember the above quote when asking for or buying toys for your children.

Blocks are a perfect example of toys that encourage learning in our children.

Playing with blocks has delighted children through the ages. Your modern-day child is no

exception! Blocks should be part of their play experiences early and often. Anything can be

used for block play: Styrofoam, packing materials, cardboard boxes, empty food

containers…use your imagination.

When playing with blocks your child is learning… …mathematical concepts, like patterns, shapes, sizes, quantities & counting

**ask your child these questions…

Whose tower is bigger? Why?

I wonder if we have enough blocks to build a road all the way to the wall?

How many square blocks do you have?

…Scientific concepts, like cause and effect, problem solving, predicting, weight & balance.

**ask your child these questions…

What would happen if we put a round block on top of the tower?

Can you find another block that’s as heavy as this one?

What’s another way to make a block road?

What’s another way to knock down the tower?

…Literacy skills like story telling, listening, representation, letter recognition & printing.

**ask your child these questions…

How do we know which building is the firehouse?

Tell me a story about your castle and I’ll write it down.

Can you tell me what you plan to build with the blocks?

Let’s draw a map of your building.

…Social skills like pretending, sharing, cooperating & noticing the world around them.

**ask your child these questions…

Who will take care of the animals in the zoo?

What kinds of houses do people in Alaska live in?

There are no more triangle blocks, Are there other blocks we can use?

Can you both build a city together?

3rd Grade News

We had a great first quarter and are looking forward to the new and exciting things we will be doing and learning during the second quarter. A big thanks to all the parents for coming out to conferences. I am very impressed with the improvements we have been making. We added a couple new students to the class in the last few weeks so we have grown to a class of 16! In math we are working hard to learn our multiplication strategies and facts. The students are so excited about multiplication and division this year.

I love coming to school each day to this wonderful group of students and I am very thankful for

them. I know we are all excited for the holiday season that is approaching. In honor of Thanksgiving coming up, I asked the students what they were thankful for. Some of their responses were… Cooper- For everyone and God. Aliyah- I am thankful for anything. Ryann- God and everything I have Paisley- I am thankful for my pets. 4th Grade News

Wow first quarter flew by fast in 4th grade! We have settled right into our routines and have been super busy during our school days. It is so great that the fourth-grade students love to think outside the box and explore new and fun ways to learn, because it makes our days go by so fast.

One of our projects for Halloween included building haunted houses that covered curriculum across the board in math, writing, and science. The students had to design, problem solve, analyze, and create their houses to depict both the interiors and exteriors. The kids were so creative and worked very hard writing their own pamphlets to advertise their haunted house.

We also honored Mrs. Rice for Principal’s Month by having Mrs. Day help us with a PowerPoint that highlighted where we would send Mrs. Rice on vacation if money wasn’t a factor. Mrs. Rice was able to visit many tropical places, Disneyworld, and even good old Kansas City! Thank you again for all you do for us Mrs. Rice.

Second quarter we will be focusing on multiplication and division in Math class, writing fictional narratives, studying the elements of fiction in Reading, and Native Americans in Social Studies. We are looking forward to more projects and team building activities, as well as our winter holiday celebrations that are coming up.

Until next time,

Mrs. Umphrey

Art

Much of 2nd Quarter in the Art room is spent working on color and color theory! All junior high classes worked on mixing colors from the three primary colors. Most made a color wheel with 12 colors! They should be able to use the vocabulary words for primary, secondary, intermediate, warm, cool and neutral to describe different colors and their relationship to each other. Taking our color knowledge further, 7th and 8th grade completed warm/cool grid designs and 5th grade made a warm/cool handprint op-art piece. We will continue to work on monochromatic and analogous color schemes. Then we will work on value -- both with grayscale and color.

Junior High also took a quick look at VanGogh and created artwork based on his Starry Night and Sunflowers. K, 1st, and 2nd spent some time talking about a few famous artists including Matisse and Picasso. They made their own Picasso monster and Matisse apple plate. Third and 4th grade have been exploring different mediums completing projects using oil pastels, chalk pastels and paint. Third grade used complementary colors to complete their chameleons and Fourth Grade will make a color wheel of turkey feathers.

Art Club has started! I’m so excited to work with these enthusiastic students after school. We have enjoyed several fall projects and are looking forward to making a few holiday creations. Be looking for our artwork on display at the Christmas Music Program! - Mrs. Crosby

Music News

Elementary students have been working hard preparing for a musical! This musical will feature all students from K-4th, and will feature 3rd and 4th graders in speaking roles. Miranda Santos and Avery Apel from 4th grade will play the two main speaking roles. We are excited to premiere this stage production on December 10th at 7pm.

Junior high band students have been preparing for their respective concerts, which

will also be on December 10th, but at 6pm. The night will begin with 6th grade, transition to the combined 7th and 8th grade band, and end with our beginning 5th grade band. As a newcomer myself, I have been amazed with how much progress these students have been able to make in just one semester!

- Mr. Mohler

Counselor’s Corner

We are working on emotions with every class. The kids have been learning about different

feelings and what they mean. We have been working on these second quarter. Do you want to

help? Have a discussion about emotions and how to respond when they take over. Ex. You are

really sad because you had an argument with a friend. Thanks for all you do for your students! I

enjoy working with them.

Library

Mrs. Day

As the year progresses, elementary students are familiarizing themselves with the computer. Kindergarten works on letter recognition and mouse movement in addition to their regular library story time. The 1st through 4th Grade have been focusing on mastering basic computer and keyboarding skills. All students now have a login to renickrams.typingclub.com so they can work on touch typing. The 1st and 2nd graders have finally mastered the art of logging into Google Classroom and are starting to create basic word documents from a template. They can even login by themselves!! The 3rd graders went on a $1000 Shopping Spree and learned to put their purchases into a simple spreadsheet. Fourth Grade got creative and decided to send Mrs. Rice on a virtual vacation using slides. Students altered photos to have her swimming with dolphins and dancing the hula in Hawaii! In computer literacy, the 5th grade students are expanding on their keyboarding skills and putting home-row to work. They utilized PowerPoint to create an Amazing Animal presentation and have been working on critical thinking with writing prompts in Google Docs. The 6th grade created Digital Photo books in slides and also created a slide presentation to teach the class about an innovator of their choice. The 7th and 8th grade computer application class has been very busy. The created their Fantasy Life in slides then became Candy Bar Designers for Willy Wonka. Using Paint 3D, they created their own candy bars and designed a magazine ad to promote the new product. Currently, the class is working to create their own children’s books using the Bokemon website. With any luck, they will be published authors before Christmas!

Resource Room

We are learning so many things right now. In ELA, we are continuing to read Holes. We will soon finish our unit over verbs, particularly helping verbs. In math, students are working at their own pace.

I would encourage all students to attempt the to read 2 books a month for the reading trip in the spring. The student reads a book and completes the book report project from me. Both books and reports are due by the end of each month.

We are continuing to learn spelling. Students receive spelling words on Tuesday and test on Friday.

If you have any questions or concerns. please call the office at 660-263-4886. Mrs. Gates

Title I Math News

Answers to common questions about the Title I program: What is Title I?

Title I is a federally funded program that provides supplemental help in reading and/or math to students who qualify. It is designed to

help students who need a little extra support in order to grasp important grade level specific skills. By providing students with extra

help from a certified teacher, the Title I Program will give each student who qualifies extra instruction and materials to master grade

level appropriate skills so that the student is better prepared for his/her academic future. The Title I teacher is trained with the

techniques and materials that have proven to be successful in helping students gain knowledge so they have the skills necessary to be

successful.

Who will be providing this extra support to my child?

Your child will receive additional instruction and support from a highly qualified teacher who will use a variety of techniques that

have been proven to help children understand and master the skills that lead to future success. At Renick, these teachers are Beth

Richardson (reading) and Kelli Hammond (math).

How does my child qualify for Title I?

Renick provides Title I services for ALL students. Any student that exhibits the need for extra support in math and reading is

eligible. Students are selected based on test scores, class performance, and teacher/parent recommendation.

When will my child receive this extra instruction from the Title I Program?

Your child will receive the instruction during the regular school hours. The extra instruction might be in the regular classroom or the

Title I classroom.

How can I support my child in the Title I Program?

There will be opportunity for parental involvement throughout the school year as well as newsletters to encourage and nurture student

academic support from home. Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher, Mrs. Richardson, or Mrs. Hammond if you have any

questions or concerns. Studies show that student success increases when parents become readily involved in their child’s education.

Title I Reading News

Happy Fall!

I hope this letter finds you warm and cozy. We have been warming up our brains by:

Kindergarten - Learning all our letters, their sounds, and how to write our names. Also, Fundations!

First Grade - Tapping out our letter sounds in words and saying our nonsense words as whole words.

Second Grade - Working on our fluency, vocabulary and different important reading strategies. Also, Fundations!

Third Grade - Working on fluency, vocabulary, and different skills or strategies in reading.

Fourth Grade - learning about Context Clues.

I would like to personally thank everyone for coming to the Book Fair and helping to support our school. I am using some of the profits from the Book Fair to buy our students their own book to be autographed by Angela Cervantes when she visits our school on November 19th. We are very excited about our upcoming Author visit! Another bit of exciting news is how wonderful our students are doing with our new reading program this year. I am putting all their projects up in the hallway on the wall. Please come check them out. Keep up the good work! All students that complete the requirements will be able to go on the Reading trip at the end of the year. Warmest Wishes, Mrs. Richardson

Math classes are flying by! We are getting deeper into various math studies. 5th grade is focused on multi-digit and decimal division, while 6th graders are including fractions into their division and multiplication knowledge base! 7th grade is being introduced to negative numbers and how to use them in all 4 mathematical operations! 8th graders are learning about transformations (moving an object on a coordinate plane), and how that impacts the size, shape, and location of points, lines, and objects! We are closing in on the end of the second unit and are working on implementing stations into our learning environment!

Physical Education/Health

During second quarter in PE, the kindergarten through 2nd graders will be playing

kickball, alligator and will be covering a unit over bean bag games. This unit will include the

games bean bag scramble and trash the yard. We will finish out the quarter playing pin-blaster.

The 3rd through 8th grade PE classes have just completed the fall testing period of the

presidential physical fitness tests. This includes the one-mile run, push-up, sit-up, and sit &

reach tests. These tests are designed to help students determine their overall fitness level. The

students did a great job in this first session of testing. Over the winter season we will address

what physical fitness needs the students need to improve on. We will then test the students

again in the spring. During second quarter, the junior high students will be playing gaga ball,

capture the flag and then will finish the quarter with a unit over badminton.

During second quarter in health, the 5th grade class is working on a unit over taking

charge of your health. The 6th graders are working on a unit over mental and emotional health

and the 7th and 8th grade class is working on a unit over alcohol.

Science News from Mrs. Morgan

Hello to all Renick families! Fall is flying by and our students are working hard in science.

Here is a rundown of what we are studying this quarter in science. 5th graders are learning about many different things including ecology and energy and 6th graders working on the structure of life. Soon they will start exploring the human body. 7th graders are learning about ecology and ecosystems. Finally, 8th graders are in their energy and will start work on Space soon as well. In STEM, we are working on many building projects in their BUILD! UNIT and we finished up our study of all things haunted recently as well. I want to thank the Renick community for the amazing support for our school and teachers. I hope that all of you know that you may contact me at any time with questions, concerns, or celebrations. I am looking forward to a great school year!

Please come say hi!

Thanks! Mrs. Morgan [email protected]

Social Studies

Hello from Social Studies! It is so hard to believe that December is almost here and that the school year is already almost halfway done! This time of year, we celebrate important days such as Veteran’s Day and 9/11 as well as Pearl Harbor Day. All of the junior high Social Studies classes pause in their studies and spend a little time on those days working to understand the importance of remembering and honoring those who gave their time, their energy, and sometimes the ultimate sacrifice to keep our country free.

Fifth grade has just about finished up their study of the colonization of the United States. Next, fifth grade will continue with the story of our country with their look at the American Revolution. We will look at the causes of the war along with some of the major events. It has been a lot of fun to see this group change and grow as they have settled into their roles as middle school students.

Sixth grade is continuing their journey through the Ancient World. We have covered the Stone Age, Mesopotamia, Egypt, and are just about done with Ancient China. Sixth grade loves projects and has enjoyed activities such as an archaeological dig in the Stone Age as well as mummifying a Barbie in Egypt. As we get ready to finish up China, we will finish our look at the Great Wall as well as try our hand with writing with paint brushes. Next stop on our global exploration is Ancient India.

Seventh grade is deep into their study of the original thirteen colonies and colonial life. We will finish up our look at these settlements in the New World before we look deeper into the unrest of the colonists leading to the American Revolution. Our goal will be to wrap the Revolution and its effects before Christmas so we can start the New Year with the founding fathers and the creation of our new country.

Eighth grade has spent their time reminding themselves of the Civil War before looking closely at Reconstruction and the struggle to pick up the pieces of the country. We are almost done with our journey through Westward Expansion and some of the reasons that our country spread west. We will pause our story of the United States there to pick up our study of Civics and how our government works. As election season is gearing up, it’s exciting to have real world applications of this topic to discuss with these kiddos.

If you get a chance, please check with your middle school student on the state of their supplies for class. It’s the time of year when stashes of pencils and such start to get a little low and could definitely be refreshed! As always, feel free to contact me anytime via email or call the school and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can! Have a wonderful holiday season! :) Mrs. K [email protected]
