I got involved in the Renfrew Collingwood INTERactive initiative more than a year ago. At that time, we called it Interculturalism and Physical Activity. The concept is to use physical activity as a tool to foster greater intercultural connections in the neighbourhood. In other words, promoting exercise as a way for neighbours to get to know one another. The project has been a lot of fun, and quite a success as more and more people in our community are getting active and meeting new people!

I’ve been working at Collingwood Neighbourhood House (CNH) for almost four years as the seniors program coordinator. Since day one, I have been fascinated by the way this community embraces and celebrates its diversity. It delights me that on the way to my desk I get to greet my co-workers “good morning” in five different languages! When I needed to translate a simple phrase for a poster, I was able to get it done in one afternoon by simply asking around. I work alongside people with different abilities, religions, genders, sexual orientations, cultures, income levels and beliefs, and it is through this rich diversity that I continue to learn new things every day.

One of my roles with RC INTERactive was to support the volunteer “connectors.” Connectors are outgoing people who are knowledgeable about the programs and services available for residents in Renfrew-Collingwood. They meet new people and connect them with programs and services that respond to their needs. I’ve learned so much working with the connectors, and it has truly shaped the way I do my work. Here are some points that stick out in my mind:• Telling someone about a program won’t get them in the door. Inviting them personally

and going with them for their first time is far more effective. • Exercise is difficult for many people in our community to make time for because of family and work commitments.• Newcomers have a tremendous amount of things to deal with as they adjust to their new home and this can be very stressful; developing friendships is important in this transition.• Most people who exercise talk about the social benefits just as much as the physical benefits.

The other part of my role was to be a liaison between the School of Kinesiology at the University of British Columbia and the Renfrew-Collingwood community. In this role, I supported UBC students who were involved in INTERactive through a course called Interculturalism, Health and Physical Activity taught by Wendy Frisby, PhD.

As a graduate of the School of Kinesiology myself, I understand the university perspective so it was a good fit for me to be in this role. I was able to make sure the students contributed to the project in ways that were sustainable for our community. There are often large gaps

between community and academia, but this felt like a fair give-and-take relationship. Dr. Frisby recently retired and very kindly asked me to teach her course this fall. I am thrilled to be able to keep the INTERactive connection alive as I take on this new and exciting endeavor. Thank you, Wendy!

I would like to thank everyone from the RC INTERactive project for all we’ve shared, learned and co-created together. A special thanks to all the connectors; you inspired me greatly. Thank you to Nancy Reynolds and Paula Carr for your incredible support and for believing in me and my abilities.

There are new and exciting things coming for RC INTERactive! If you want to be involved contact [email protected] or 604-435-0323.

Kat Cureton continues to work at Collingwood Neighbourhood HOuse three days a week as the seniors program coordinator and co-coordinator of the Renfrew-Collingwood Better at Home program.

Family tree tips for favourite family recipesby Loretta Houben Summer is a wonderful time to have a family picnic or a reunion. Everyone enjoys catching up on the latest news and seeing how the kids have grown over the past year. The best part of these special occasions is sitting down and eating uncle John’s BBQ ribs and aunt Susie’s homemade potato salad.

Maybe you’ve never organized a family reunion, but I’m sure you have special dishes in your family that everyone asks for over and over again. Before you know it, the kids will be grown and gone. But if they are like myself, they will have fond memories of the delicious meals prepared at home and will ask for the recipes so they can continue the traditions.

One way to do this is to keep the recipes in your computer or tablet or add them to Pinterest online and share with the public. You could also make a special scrapbook and include photos. Michaels craft store or any local scrapbooking store in the lower

mainland has many cute cookbooks for photos with matching stickers. I’ve collected a few but haven’t yet added my own family recipes to them. I wish both my grandmas had done this for me! I would love to see their handwriting while enjoying their favourite recipes.

Late summer is a bountiful season here in British Columbia. Did your ancestors try their hand at canning fruit or vegetables? My aunt Bertha passed on her dill pickle recipe, which I will share here, and every August I make a few glass jars of scrumptious pickles. Of course, it may be mandatory to have some German blood to truly enjoy the tart garlic taste!

Here’s one more idea for sharing recipes. Christmas is a few months away, so you have time to work on it. On a lined index card hand print your favourite recipe in your best handwriting. Paste a photo on the back, and insert the card along with blank cards into a decorated file folder to share with family members at a Christmas party.

Give each member a file folder a few weeks before hand, so they can share their own recipes. You could paste photocopies of family photos on the outside of the folders. Pictures taken in the kitchen would work well for this, or family sitting around the dining table. Use your imagination and have fun! Bon appetit!

Dill pickle recipe from Aunt Bertha Barner

Ingredients: dill pickles, fresh dill, garlic, 1 1/2 cups water, 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar, 1/8 cup sugar, 1/8 cup pickling salt

Sterilize glass jars. Arrange two to three sprigs of fresh dill in jars along with one clove fresh garlic. Add pickles. Stir rest of ingredients into water and boil until dissolved. Cool slightly. Pour over pickles in jars. Let cool for one hour and put on lid. Please note: these are not canned. Store in fridge. Best eaten within two weeks.

Summer TEAM presents LGBTQ2 issues to community groups by Sydney Emo

Summer school may have been cancelled this year, but a group of 13 youth at Collingwood Neighborhood House still managed to spend their summer working hard and learning.

TEAM, which stands for Teens Educating Against Misuse, is a summer version of Collingwood’s Prevention Education Program. Participants from grades 7 to 9 select a social issue of interest to learn about and research, and, by the end of the summer, they have a final presentation to showcase to youth and community groups around the city.

This year, the 13 youth in the program chose the topic of LGBTQ2 issues. LGBTQ2 refers to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans*, Queer and two-spirited community. Through group discussions, activities, games, research and a guest presentation from Qmunity, these youth have learned a lot about diversity and acceptance. Of course, TEAM participants aren’t expected to just work their whole summer away! There is time in every session for lots of games, crafts, theme days, and everyone’s favourite: field trips! This year, we did a scavenger hunt in Central Park, kayaked at Deer Lake, went glow in the dark bowling and held our bittersweet wrap-up party at Granville Island.

On August 7, TEAM fostered some intergenerational connections when we visited the Renfrew-Collingwood Seniors’ Centre. The youth came well prepared to share their knowledge with the seniors. The seniors were their first audience for their presentation on LGBTQ2 issues. When that was finished, they got to see a talent show put on just for them! The youth showcased some great talent—acting out scenes from their favourite books, black belt tae-kwon-do moves, storytelling, dancing and comedy! Overall, it was a wonderful afternoon for everyone involved.

In addition to the Renfrew-Collingwood Senior’s Centre, TEAM did presentations at Collingwood Neighborhood House, the CHILL program at Renfrew Community Centre and a youth group at Frog Hollow Neighbourhood House.

As this year’s programmer for TEAM, I got to see firsthand how hardworking and fun this group was. I learned a lot as a person and as a facilitator, and am so glad I got to spend my summer with these spectacular youth, talking about some very relevant topics.

Sydney Emo was the programmer for TEAM this summer. She recently graduated from Windermere Secondary School, and will be studying psychology, writing and social justice at the University of Victoria in the fall.

Dear reader,

Happy Labour Day. Remember to live happy, because life is synonymous with performing a decent job. Everyone in the world lives and works in one way or another. What we speak, read, write and feel motivate us. To live is to work.

Nowhere have you got something for nothing. What costs nothing is worth nothing. Whatever activity we play that shows our personality, comply well with what we make strengthens our character, our dignity and provide everything needed for our family.

My family and I just got back from six days of camping on Vancouver Island. We had such a good time I decided to make this month’s “Read On” page all about camping.

Summer is nearly over, but as long as the weather is good, camping can be enjoyed well into fall. Camping is a very popular activity for Canadians. Canadians who grew up in Canada often have happy memories of camping as children. They want to give the same experience to their own children.

Many newcomers to Canada have told me that they find the idea of camping strange. Why would anyone want to sleep outside? Why leave the comforts of home to sleep on the ground? To someone who has not grown up camping, it can seem like a strange idea, indeed.

Why Camp?Canadians enjoy camping because it brings them closer to nature. Breathing fresh air, seeing the stars, waking up to the smell of the forest—it’s all good for the body and mind. It doesn’t take much time to get out of the city and into nature. There are some beautiful camping spots under 30 minutes away from Vancouver. B.C. is full of campgrounds and parks. You

can go camping in the forest, near lakes or by the beach.

What to Bring? All you really need to camp is a tent and a something to sleep in (like a sleeping bag). If you want to be comfortable and really enjoy yourself, I recommend bringing a few more things:

1. A sleeping pad or air mattress. Most campsites are on dirt or rocks. It can be uncomfortable to sleep without anything under you. 2. A camp stove, food and cooking supplies. Don’t forget marshmallows for cooking over the fire!3. Some wood for making a fire (check to make sure that there is no burn ban)4. A flashlight5. Extra clothes and blankets. Have them close to you when you are sleeping—it gets cold at night!

Learn to CampParks Canada has an entire Learn to Camp guide on their website made for newcomers to Canada. The information can also be read in 5 other languages. There is even a Learn to Camp App for your Smartphone! You can download the app and the Learn to Camp guide at: www.pc.gc.ca/eng/media/ltc-dlc/index.aspx

The best way to learn to camp is by trying, so borrow your friend’s tent and find a campground nearby. You might love it!

Do you wear clothes? Then certainly, you should be well acquainted with the services of Mrs. Kim, Collingwood’s expert in clothes alterations. With 17 years’ experience in the industry, Mrs. Kim knows clothes.

She also knows how to alter just about any piece of clothing to better suit you and your tastes. Was there a dress on sale that didn’t quite fit? No problem. Mrs. Kim can make it fit. Wedding dresses, jackets, shirts, pants, dresses, skirts – no problem. From basic hems to complete reconstructions, Mrs. Kim is your person.

Mrs. Kim can also transform your old clothing to make it new again. A jacket might become a vest. Or an old pair of jeans might become a skirt. Yes, just bring it in so that Mrs. Kim can analyze the garment and in most cases she will be able to make the transformation. With a bit of imagination and Mrs. Kim’s help, you can customize just about anything.

And not just with clothes either. Mrs. Kim is ready and able to recover your cushions and duvet covers. She can also create new drapes or blankets from your choice of fabric. With a wide variety of threads, tools and machines at her fingertips, Mrs. Kim is also able to work on any types of fabric. Maybe

it’s a heavy leather jacket or a fine silk. No matter what the material, Mrs. Kim is ready.

With the help of her family, Mrs. Kim opened J.E.’s Alteration and Dry Cleaning in Collingwood on Dec. 31st, 2010. Her husband worked to renovate the shop, building the many racks to hold the many threads, as well as the shelves, tables and change rooms. Her daughter, Kate, took a year off of school to help her mom get the shop up and running: dealing with contractors, City Hall, business licenses and permits. Even this interview.

Yes, Mrs. Kim’s English is not yet quite perfect – she does much better in Korean. But still, when it comes to alterations, she can communicate with anyone in any language. It is one of her goals to learn English. Her hobby is plants, of which you will find many at the store along with her awesome vintage sewing machine display and community notice board.

Thank you so much Mrs. Kim for bringing your alteration skills to us here in Collingwood. When it come to alterations and dry cleaning, remember Mrs. Kim at J.E.’s Alteration and Dry Cleaning. Open Monday to Friday: 10am to 7pm and Saturday: 11am – 5pm.

Mrs. Kim can alter any type of clothing and much more.

Job search safety Take steps to prevent identity theftOnline job searching provides a number of opportunities and conveniences for job seekers. In fact, it is almost impossible to look for a job without using the internet. Most large companies, and many small and medium sized employers, only accept applications online, and, in order to apply, you will need to provide at least some personal information.

However, job seekers are a major target for scammers that seek to steal peoples’ identities. Identity theft occurs when someone steals your personal information to commit a crime, while identity fraud is the use of the identity

information of another person (living or dead) in connection with various crimes (for example: impersonating someone and the misuse of debit card or credit card information).

It is very important to ensure that the jobs you are applying for are legitimate and that you are not unintentionally providing personal information that can be used for identity theft. Legitimate Canadian employers will not ask for any banking or personal information prior to completion of a formal hiring

process – application, interviews, background and reference checks, and job offer.

When applying for jobs, do not provide any of the following information in your resume or during an interview: • Your *social insurance number (SIN). If asked for your SIN on an application form, it is appropriate to write “Available upon hiring.”• your age, marital status or birth date• your driver’s license or health card number

• any banking information including credit card, bank account and personal identification numbers (PIN)

Always let someone know where and when you will be interviewed. If the location feels unsafe for an interview, it may not be a safe place to work – no job is worth your personal safety.

Do your homework and trust your instincts.Use Google or another internet search engine to search for articles and customer reviews of the company and the services they provide.

If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t!

This job search tip has been brought to you by the Vancouver Northeast WorkBC Centre, located at 312-2555 Commercial Drive Vancouver, BC V5N 4C1. For more job search tips and/or information about our services please contact us at 604-708-9300 or visit our website at www.employmentworks.ca

The Seniors Connection

A glimpse of Chinese history in B.C.

Book launch for A Cowherd in Paradise: From China to Canada written by May Wong by Loretta Houben

Every Monday at Collingwood Neighbourhood House the senior’s wellness group meets from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. On June 16, 2014, everyone was in for a treat. May Wong read from her newly published book, A Cowherd in Paradise, and although there were 18 people in the room, you could have heard a pin drop. First May spoke about the background history for her book, which takes place in China and British Columbia. She hooked our interest by stating that her father, Ah Dang, had to spend his first few months in Vancouver in jail at the bottom of Burrard Street in what was known as the pig pen. He wasn’t a criminal nor did he have an incurable disease. He was simply of Chinese origin.

May outlined a brief history of B.C. When the railroad was built in the 1880s, two-thirds of the labour force were Chinese. Regardless of this fact, a head tax was imposed on all Chinese immigrants; $50 in 1885, $100 in 1902 and $500 a year later. May described the Empress of Japan, the ship that many Chinese immigrants travelled in to come to the port of Vancouver. The ship’s original figure head is in the Vancouver Maritime Museum, and a replica is in Stanley Park. Four people in the room also had ancestors who travelled on this ship!

May then read about her mother’s life growing up in the 1920s and her job caring for the family’s one water buffalo. How her parents met and married, and how they were separated from each other for 25 years due to Canada’s immigration laws, makes for mesmerizing reading, as does the rest of their story which tells of their life in Montreal, Quebec. There was a brief discussion and question period afterwards, and

a few people purchased a copy of May’s book, myself included. To hear a portion of this event, please go to this link: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCw6oUMMjyt9kCY4-VQphKmw/feed I noticed the photographer, Peter Kwong, who sat beside me looked familiar. It turned out he had been an office colleague of mine but I hadn’t seen him for over 30 years!

Ready for more ideas worth spreading? TEDxRenfrewCollingwood 2014 is back! by Eddie Tabakman

Residents of Renfrew-Collingwood are soon going to be seeing some familiar red letters in their neighbourhood. That’s because the second annual TEDxRenfrewCollingwood will be taking place on Saturday, October 25 at Windermere Secondary.

Last year’s inaugural event was a big success and organizers Niki Dun and Gemma Scott decided to bring back the day-long conference, focused on providing a platform and environment for sharing ideas worth spreading. Their team of volunteers are all very excited about the speakers that they have lined up for the program, each of whom will be presenting under the theme Rock, Paper, Scissors.

Acting as a hub of energy and inspiration, TEDxRenfrewCollingwood brings together creators, catalysts, designers and thinkers to share their ideas worth spreading on the TEDx stage. A day of listening that invites thought, discussion and play, the TEDx talks are interspersed with activities, performances, and food worth eating. It is a chance to welcome interesting people into the community and to showcase and celebrate the dynamic ideas that exist in Renfrew-Collingwood and in Vancouver.

Almost unanimously, TEDxRenfrewCollingwood 2013 was heralded as a success. Many who attended offered their feedback. “TEDxRenfrewCollingwood was such an inspiring day not only in terms of the amazing list of speakers but also because it gave us the opportunity to have a TEDx event right in our neighbourhood. That gave youth, seniors and others in our neighbourhood the opportunity to get engaged

and work on a strong community-building event,” said one TEDxRenfrewCollingwood participant.

Last year’s presenters ranged from motivational speakers to science experts to sex educators, and this year’s lineup is no less diverse and exciting. Auditions have already taken place and organizers are currently finalizing the list of speakers, some of whom will travel from the United States to present their talks. As curator Niki Dun explains, this year’s theme of Rock, Paper, Scissors is a starting point to narrate the multidisciplinary event.

“With looking at Rock, our team focused on the people who ground us, the planet we live on and the solid foundations of design and education. Paper led us to examining communications, media and the arts—and new ideas revolving around the paper of today. Scissors found us targeting innovators—those who are cutting through the present and leaning into the future and looking at doing so with intelligence and thought.”

Tickets are priced at $60 for the general public and $40 for students and seniors. Both include food and drinks throughout the day. For more information and to purchase tickets to TEDxRenfrewCollingwood 2014, visit https://tedxrenfrewcollingwood2014.eventbrite.ca

TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks (both in person and through video) spark deep discussion and connection in a small group.

Vintage cars show at 2400 Motel On August 5, dozens of vintage cars courtesy of the Vintage Car Club of Canada (Vancouver and Burnaby chapters) brought some nostalgia back to the Renfrew-Collingwood neighbourhood with a stop at the historic 2400 Motel, located at 2400 Kingsway near Slocan. The 2400 Motel’s first vintage car show took us back to the good ’ol days when citizens motored across North America, stopping at drive-in motor courts for their nights’ stay. “Car culture was responsible for the 2400 Motel being built in 1946, and car culture accounts for its survival,” according to Birmingham & Wood Architects in their report to the City of Vancouver. Read more on the history of 2400 Motel and see more photos of the vintage car show at http://www.2400motel.com/u/whatshappening.phtml
