BUILDING A MORE AND FUTURE
The chameleon, Concord Academyβs enduring mascot,
is a fitting symbol of adaptability in a changing world.
As a school, we continually evolve to meet the needs
of our students and faculty, from our classrooms to
our common spaces and creative endeavors. As a
community driven by love of learning, we encourage
the vibrant exchange of ideas that deepens our
understanding of ourselves and the world.
In that spirit of renewal, a working group of faculty,
staff, trustees, parents, and alumnae/i came together
to take a fresh look at our mission statement and
determined it could better reflect the community we
are and aspire to be; one that honors each individual
while challenging us all to grow individually and as a
school in order to be a welcoming and equitable space
for all of our members.
Our renewed mission statement more strongly reflects
our lived experience, charged by an active voice that
fully engages every person at CA within its tenets.
Our mission is a call to action. Today, this is more
important than ever.

We have also become known as a community that, in its everyday actions and traditions alike, lives its mission. Last spring, we decided it was time to revisit our mission to ensure it accurately reflected not only who we are, but also who we want to become.
What does it mean to βlove learningβ? What does it mean to be a community that is βstriving for equityβ? And what do we mean by βcommon trustβ? These words call upon us to care for and attend to one another as individuals; to contribute meaningfully and to opt into constructively building our community, day by day; and to love the journey as much as the answers we find along the way.
The resulting revised mission statement is one of which we are deeply proud; and, in a world that can seem lacking in hope, it is one that we believe will renew us for years to come. If we strive to live according to our mission, we will not only knit together this community, but also develop the skills and attitudes that will enable us to contribute to the world beyond this community.
Former headmaster David Aloian once reflected on the value of secondary schools like CA. Speaking of disciplines, he said, βThey are ends in themselves, for without them, without science, without history, without art, in short, without learning, there is no kind of life worth living.β He concluded simply, βLearning gives quality and depth to life; without it there is no joy possible.β You need look no further than the pages of this annual report to know that we are a community where learning and joy abound.
In recent years, through partnerships with generous donors from the CA community, we have significantly increased our endowment, built a strong and growing financial aid program, and invested in major improvements to our campus. This support has grown not by accident but with intention. Every gift has been an expression of faith in these values, every dollar an assertion that what we do here matters.
You will find the names of those who have made this possible in the pages that follow. Over the years, the support of our donors has expanded to meet the evolving needs of our school. Our donors see in CA the very same thing that our founders saw almost 100 years ago: curious, passionate students working with caring, dedicated teachers. This annual report is one small way of voicing our gratitude for those who have helped to make this possible.
Thank you. It is something we cannot say enough: Thank you for making CAβs prospects exceptional. We are deeply grateful.
Sincerely,
For nearly 100 years, CA has been a leader in progressive education, honoring each student as an individual, and inspiring all to see learning not as an achievement, but as a lifelong pursuit. And for nearly 100 years, we have been renewed by our mission and our people β we are a community that has become known for its remarkable generosity.

CA is a community that strives to bring out the best in every student. How do we do this? We start each day, each class, each project, each rehearsal, and each practice with the belief that, given the resources to learn, every person on this campus has the capacity to lead. Our distinctive approach to education is only possible because hundreds of stakeholders come together to invest in our young people β giving them the tools and the confidence to shine their light for the benefit of all.
Every year, we take a leap of faith, knowing that tuition revenue and the draw from our endowment wonβt cover all of CAβs fundamental expenses. The Annual Fund is the renewable glue that keeps CA whole and strong. In 2018β19, the Annual Fund delivered 11 percent of CAβs operating budget.
Name any aspect of life at CA, and you can be assured that the Annual Fund helps to make it possible. All of this is only possible

β We believe in educating the whole student. Developing skills on the court, field, track, or diamond that build on the values of teamwork, balance, and integrity is a big part of that.β

Life at CA is so vibrant, itβs impossible to list all of our student experiences.
12 13
Through The Concord Academy Centennial Campaign, CA alumnae/i, parents, and friends have generously supported capital and endowment initiatives. It is easy to see and feel how your contributions have already begun to lift the CA experience for every student, teacher, advisor, and coach. Our campus now better reflects the strength of our program, and our endowment is on a path to deliver a level of support necessary for the school to to the fullest.
We are humbled by your overwhelming response and thank you for your belief in our future. We are in the midst of an incredible movement for our school community.
Together, we are making important strides. Together, we are transforming lives. Together, gift by gift, we are building a truly remarkable and sustainable future for CA.

CAβs residential houses are core to our schoolβs identity. This has been true since CAβs first days, when Haines House stood as our only building, serving the schoolβs every purpose.
Over time and across generations, these houses have evolved along with CA. In order to serve todayβs students, we knew that significant investments needed to be made in these historic buildings. We were prepared to take the necessary steps to provide living and learning environments to match our distinctive program and our vision for the future. We asked for your support, and you answered the call!
Thanks to gift commitments totaling more than $13 million, we were able to turn plans into action and ideas into real working environments.
The common rooms in all the houses represent the most dramatic change β bright and spacious, warm and welcoming, with functional kitchens and room to convene and linger.
In Bradfordβs Sylvia M. Mendenhall Common Room, students and faculty can now easily gather for classes during the day, club activities, and unstructured time together. It is heartening to see day students and boarders enjoying deeper bonds because they now have these spaces to share. In so many ways, the houses are integral to building a truly interconnected community.
On evenings and weekends, boarders host social gatherings, house meetings, and study groups in an open and versatile setting. The experience is personal, with organic and inclusive programming that advances our mission and our understanding of ourselves and the world.
Thanks to the generosity of a lead CA Houses benefactor, the new Commons joining Haines and Hobson Houses was dedicated to one of CAβs distinguished and beloved faculty, William M. Bailey Pβ87 β88 β91, GPβ21 β22.
A member of the history department from 1967 to 2002, Bill encouraged students to view everyone and everything with fresh eyes, open minds, and welcoming hearts; and to appreciate the gifts of studying history: seeing the details, questioning assumptions, and learning from the lessons of the past. In his retirement, Bill continues to inspire alumnae/i and CAβs teachers through his infectious love of history and enthusiastic involvement with the school.
A Living Tribute

The newly dedicated William M. Bailey Commons is a fitting tribute to an exemplary teacher who inspired so many to view the world with curiosity and wonder.

What does experiential equity look like? Part of creating an inclusive community at CA is ensuring that every student has access to the same experiences β regardless of financial circumstances. For students receiving financial aid, that means having the same opportunities as their peers to bring their whole self into the classroom, studio, and lab; onto the field and stage; and onto a plane to participate in a service trip. Whether their interest is learning an instrument or simply going to the movies with friends, we want every student to experience the full freedom that CA offers.

At CA, we believe that there is no greater investment than the one we make in our people.
FI N A N CIAL AI D
Our unique financial aid program makes this belief real. When we provide financial aid grants, we make sure that we are covering everything the student will need. In 2018β19, we were able to make this commitment to 100 students and their families.
CAβs comprehensive approach to financial aid is rare, and considerable support is needed to maintain β and expand β this promise. Thanks to your generosity, we can renew our commitment to deserving students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds who make CA a vibrant institution and a thriving and inclusive community.

Expanding understandingSituated minutes from Walden Pond and the Old North Bridge, and a short ride to Cambridge and Boston, CA is connected to world-renowned intellectual resources. Our students benefit immensely from the opportunities supported by the Boundless Campus endowment β activities that complement theory and practice with real-world experience and expertise. Teachers and students collaborate with local companies and communities as they expand their understanding of the world they will help to shape. There is simply no substitute for this kind of learning.
In the spring of 2019, CA students imagined (and then organized and hosted!) the inaugural Women in Technology (CA WiT) conference, an event that underscored the importance of attracting a more diverse group of creative minds to a field that will influence every aspect of the human experience.
β We now have a shared experience,β said Nick Hiebert, English faculty member and current holder of the Katherine Carton Hammer β68 Endowed Faculty Chair, upon attending the AISNE conference on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion with fellow CA colleagues.
β Even more importantly, we will continue to discuss how we can bring what we learned back to the CA community, especially our students.β
Learning at CA is distinguished by our unique array of courses. This expansive range is made possible by CAβs faculty, who bring their knowledge, passion, and intellectual curiosity to our curriculum. Among many other things, the Faculty Leadership endowment provides essential resources for teachers to design new courses and deepen their skills as educators, writers, creators, and leaders.
Last October, eight CA faculty members attended the signature Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion conference hosted by the Association of Independent Schools in New England (AISNE). Teachers from across the country were challenged to lean into equity work in their communities β work that, while difficult, is essential to building healthy environments for learning and exploration. Attendees came away with new ways of thinking, practices to bring back to the classroom, and ideas to share with colleagues. Opportunities like this help faculty to create a curriculum that is fresh and relevant, and deepen love of learning that is core to our mission.
From coding to career advice, the conference brought together female and nonbinary high school and middle school students through a shared interest in technology. CAβs WiT opened younger studentsβ eyes to new concepts and skills, and engaged participants in thought-provoking discussion and hands-on learning.
Capping a semester course taught by Kim Frederick, CA students brought a page of American history to life through a series of public gallery talks at the Concord Museum. The students learned how to approach the history of Concord through its objects, from the household goods of a freed African American man living in the 18th century to arrowheads that inspired a student talk about the influence of colonistsβ technology on indigenous peopleβs arrowhead-making techniques.

Our endowment is an enduring bedrock of our budget: the gifts that sustain us over decades. In 2018β19 alone, it provided more than $3 million to support our core operations, making it the workhorse that supported our financial aid grants, fueled professional development opportunities, maintained our buildings, and so much more. CA is able to flex its independent muscles because of the gifts that have grown our endowment over decades. Our distinctive DNA will thrive in perpetuity because of the generous financial foundation we continue to build, .
The recent growth in our endowment is not only impressive but also mission critical. You have set us on a path to imagine a future when we can moderate tuition increases, grow our financial aid program, and further invest in our faculty.

GIFTS BY LEVEL
Edith Clark Wolff β47 has made a gift to the Concord Academy Annual Fund every year since she graduated from the school in 1947. Every year! Edith gives to support financial aid for use in the current year, in an effort to make an outstanding CA education accessible to all. Edith recently celebrated her 90th birthday, and in 2018β19 made her penultimate gift to the school, acknowledging this recent milestone and the pride she has gained from investing a lifetime of support in the school she loves.
As her final gift to the school, Edith has generously planned to include CA in her estate, demonstrating belief in this unique and special community that has grown yet retained its unmistakable character across several generations.
A Lifetime of Giving to CA

Thanks to a generous gift from the class of 1968, in honor of their 50th reunion in 2018, Concord Academy hosted its first CA Summer Institute, bringing together humanities teachers from public and independent schools, all of whom are engaged in developing experiential learning opportunities for their students. Led by CA faculty members Kim Frederick and Topi Dasgupta, the four-day collaborative retreat included a keynote address and session led by Jeff Robin, a project-based learning specialist and a founder of High Tech High, as well as small-group discussions, demonstrations of collaborative learning and teaching, and off-site workshops at the Concord and deCordova Museums, Harvard University, and the Boston Public Library.
The sessions enabled teachers to focus exclusively on ideas around experiential learning in the humanities, while workshopping ideas with colleagues and receiving and sharing feedback. For all participants, it was an invaluable opportunity for ideation and professional development. We are tremendously grateful to the class of 1968 for making this event possible!

REM EM BERI NG
Dexter Foss Dexter Foss passed away in August of 2018 after living a full life alongside his twin sister, Sarah βSallyβ Foss β41. A native of Concord, Mass., Dexter attended CA in grades one through four, from 1929 to 1933, and remained invested in the school throughout his life, serving as an active trustee for several years in his retirement. Sally remembers him as a person who was generous with his βtime, effort, and treasure, particularly in hospitality and educational support.β
In honor and memory of Dexterβs life and generous spirit, Sally made a gift to the 2018β19 Annual Fund to support financial aid for a student born and living in Concord. We are honored that Sally chose to remember Dexterβs life in this impactful way, and are proud to steward his wonderful legacy here at Concord Academy.

REUNION LEADERSHIP
Reunion is a time to reconnect with friends and teachers, and to rekindle the spark that was ignited for so many here on campus. For their efforts to make this a joyous and well-attended event, we are deeply thankful to the following individuals who served as leaders for their classes in planning and supporting their 2019 milestone reunion celebrations.
MISSION REVIEW COMMITTEE
Gratitude does not sufficiently convey how meaningful a contribution the Mission Review Committee made to CA during the 2018β19 year. For your wisdom and your eloquence, and for the way that you have helped to lift a community through our revised mission, we thank you.
