Renewables: ENGIE’s Canadian Path ForwardWith North American biomass facilities operating in its portfolio for 30 years, ENGIE’s renewables-focused footprint in Canada amplifies its deep-rooted support of clean energy on the continent and globally. ENGIE recognizes the energy transition is a world-wide shift accelerating the development of less carbon-intensive energy. Consumers’ expectations—and a collective responsibility to future generations—are growing. With 660 megawatts (MW) of wind power and another 20 MW of electricity gleaned from the sun, nearly 85 percent of the company’s Canadian power is produced by renewable resources in Ontario, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and British Columbia. Since completing its first two wind farms in 2007, ENGIE has brought 10 additional renewable facilities online to power Canada.
Throughout its carbon-free portfolio expansion, ENGIE has made it a priority to collaborate with facility land owners—as well as adjacent neighbors and stakeholders. With each new project, the company commits to employing as many locals as possible during construction as well as at the permanent facility. ENGIE employees take pride in supporting the communities where the company operates. The company’s charitable initiatives across Canada have funded scholarships in renew-ables technician training, energy efficiency upgrades and operations in community centers, equipment for local fire departments, children’s
health initiatives, new outdoor youth recreation sites, and community holiday events, among others.

Bolstering Renewable Power Availability in OntarioOntario is the heart of ENGIE’s operations in Canada. With close proximity to the majority of the company’s wind and solar power facilities, greater Toronto serves as ENGIE’s Canadian generation headquarters. ENGIE launched its renewable presence in Ontario in 2008 when a collection of four wind sites, called AIM-SOP, began operating with 40 MW on the north shore of Lake Erie. Since then, under the Feed-in Tariff and Renewable Energy Standard Offer programs, the company has developed and constructed five additional wind farms and two solar facilities to operate a total of 374 MW in the province. Having overseen the completion of eight Ontario facilities—from green field project to carbon-free power generator—ENGIE’s development, construction, environmental, regulatory and community support teams recognize the vital role of landowners and area stakeholders to a project’s success. In maintaining a responsible use of the land’s natural resources, employees focus as well on the ethical implementation of the province’s environmental laws and framework. With nearly a decade of renewables planning, building and operations work in the province, ENGIE is committed to collaborating with community stakeholders to continue a sustainable business approach to powering Ontario and Canada.
