Renewable Energy for an Eco-School

New Scotland Hill Primary School has already achieved bronze Eco-schools status. To move on to Silver and ultimately Green Flag requires that the school achieves a number of things. Renewable energy is one of the key elements of reaching Green Flag status.

RS Renewables conducted a renewable energy feasibility study on behalf of the school. The work involved looking at all aspects of the school’s energy usage and assessing the energy generating potential of the natural resources on site. The relative costs of the viable renewable energy systems were compared and a series of recommendations made.

The school were particularly interested in the heating for a new swimming pool and other facilities being planned.

The recommendations will now be considered by the school in consultation with the local education authority.

“The report was fantastic and gave us a real insight into the possibilities for using renewable energies in this school. It will enable us to put a long term plan in place. We are looking forward to saving on our energy bills in the future.” - Pat Kerton, Head Teacher.

Renewable Energy Feasibility Study

A Renewable Energy Feasibility Study looks at all aspects of an organisation’s energy usage including the various fuel types such as gas, oil and electricity used for heating and electricity.

By studying past energy usage and taking into account any planed changes a detailed profile of daily energy usage can be constructed.

Other drivers such as the desire to achieve specific sustainability criteria or eco-credentials are examined.

Natural Resources

The natural resources available at the site are mapped and measured including wind, solar, hydro and space for heat pumps. The characteristics of each resource are presented and the possible energy generation of each are calculated and compared with site energy requirements. Any major obstacles to obtaining planning permission are identified.

The potential capital costs for various solutions are considered along with ongoing operational costs such as maintenance and fuel. The CO2 savings are calculated.

Results and Recommendations

The results of the Renewable Energy Feasibility Study are published in a comprehensive written report detailing the findings and estimated costs. Potential sources of grant and loan funding are listed.

The report contains a number of recommendations regarding the most appropriate and cost effective renewable energy solutions to best meet the clients stated requirements.
