Weather
Video from TeacherTube
1. http://teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=46319&title=Weather
This is a very short but good video. The narration and visuals show the ways weather can be observed,
measured and described by using a rain gauge, thermometer, barometer, and weather vane. This would
be a good video to use to open a unit or to introduce instruments used in collecting weather data. It lets
students see that weather is measurable, observable, and describable.

ather
This video introduces the connection between weather and the four seasons. Activities, temperature,
appropriate clothing, and condition of plant life are reviewed for each of the seasons. The next section
covers the severe or dangerous weather types of blizzards, tornados and hurricanes. Safety tips are
given for being safe in dangerous weather. The graphics for the four season portion is made up of still
pictures but video footage is used for the dangerous weather section. The narration is very good and
good information is given throughout the video.
3. http://teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=91761&title=weather
This video covers tornados, hurricanes, thunderstorms and various forms of frozen precipitation. It
cautions students to take a look at the weather forecast before leaving home so they can be prepared.
There is no narrative but there are title cards to give information before each section of slides. The
music is definitely energetic and will keep students turned in to the video. This would be good as anintroduction to how weather affects our lives or as a review or introduction to different types of severe
weather.
4. http://teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=23484&title=Thunderstorms
The visuals are dramatic and show great examples of lightning but there is no narrative, and no facts or
information of any kind given. It would however make a very good introduction to discussion of what

causes lightning or as a starting point for student projects such as writing about what causes lightning or
drawing pictures of lightning.
5. http://teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=66775&title=Severe_Weather
This video features excellent visuals of hurricanes and tornados. There are no facts or figures given but
the visual impact of the destruction of the storms make it worth using to show students examples of
severe weather. The visuals and the musical sound track are bound to get and keep the students
interest.
6. http://teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=49701&title=Hurricane_Ike_is_Approaching
This video features a globe that shows how cloud formations moved for five days across the Gulf of
Mexico before it hits the shores of Texas on September 12, 2008 as hurricane Ike. This video has no
narration or music but makes it easier for student or teacher narration of the action on the 3D globe. It
is has good graphics showing cloud movement and gives the observer a satellite view of the cloud
conditions in relation with the earth.
7. http://teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=36994&title=Weather_Review_Rap
This is a video with rap narration that reviews various important weather concepts. It covers stratus and
cirrus clouds, thunderstorms, tornados, and hurricanes. The water cycle and water vapor are both
briefly reviewed. Rain gauge and weather vane are two of the vocabulary words covered. The narrative
is good and the music would probably be very engaging for students. The graphics are colorful but are
mostly static. The content is good for a quick review before closing a unit on severe weather.
8. http://teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=103365&title=Second_Grade_Weather_Phot
o_Story
This is a final project by students at the end of a unit on weather. It is a collection of the students
drawing and narration of a key idea they learned from the unit. Topics include lightning, snow storms,
floods, water cycle, rain gauge, tornados. While students can gain facts from the presentations, this
video can also be used as an example to show students how they could create their own pictures and
narrations about weather.

This 3 part series produced by Disney is interesting and informative. It gives really good connections
between sun, clouds, precipitation and weather systems. The video may be old but the information is
still valid and the video engaging. The 3 part format could be a pro or con depending on how much time
there is for a class. Part 3 is a look from 1959 on how satellites could be used to be mans eyes in outer
space. These ideas are a lot like what the weather service actually uses today. This could lead to
discussion and research on how data collection of weather information has changed or stayed the same
over the last 50 years. The third video incorporates how technology is used to detect weather systems
and storms.
10. http://teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=88647&title=Weather_Spreadsheet_Part_1
This video shows how to make a spreadsheet to collect weather data from a weather website in MS
Excel. While this video was made for teachers it could easily be used for students because it is very
basic. Even students that have never used Excel before can easily understand how to create a weather
spreadsheet from watching this video.
