DARE TO GO DARK

LEARNING FROM REALITYREFLECTIONSUnderestimation! I underestimated how difficult and time consuming it would be to achieve this result. Once I had sourced the interior space photograph I didn’t realise how many components all need to be analysed and edited to make an exact replication. The composition of the photograph was not too hard to copy. In the photograph was only a few items of furniture and decorations and it was a 1-point perspective. I was able to obtain the correct ratio of the photograph, replicate that, analyse the camera height, exposure and zoom without too much trou-ble.The lighting proved a difficult challenge to achieve what looked to be a staged indoor studio trying to replicate two windows al-lowing in a natural daylight. This was evident from the shadows in the scene on the carpet and back wall as well as the highlights on the furniture and lampshades. Initially I assumed only two or three lights would be needed to light this space correct-ly. In my main render I have used 6! Two on each side, one highlighting the front of the curtain and another shinning down on the white triangle on the back wall. Most of the lighting was set just higher or lower than 6000K to create a natural light. These lights were difficult to coordinate and balance together to achieve realism of the materials. I didn’t realise how many items I would need to model, unfortunately I didn’t have much luck importing much of my furniture.Next time I would spend a little more time on the materials, I wasn’t happy with the flower petals or the chairs and the table top was too shiny.

INSPIRATIONI chose this photograph because of the sym-metry, colour pallet and ixture of soft and hard materials. The symmetry and composition of the photograph with the pendant lights hanging above the table and the use of thirds was pleasing to the eye.The colour pallet is dark and moody which I didn’t realise would be so challenging but greys are very on trend at the moment.Having only rendered hard objects previously I wanted to attempt some soft furnishings this time too.

MATERIALSThe most diffcult material in my scene to render was the lamp shade metals because of the reflections, lighting and cut out map. However the most difficult material in my scene for me to edit and refine over the course of the render was the carpet. After trying about five different carpets from 3D Sketchup Warehouse I settled on the final result with the help of photoshopping to edit the colour, contrast and size. Then in 3ds-max it took a while to edit the roughness, bump and displacement maps to achieve the short shaggy carpet that showed shadow lines.
