Invitation to Renaissance14

Respected Sir/Madam,

Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute is a prime institute of education and its graduates have made

their place in the upper echelons of the corporate sector. Apart from this the students of

GIK Institute also have been involved in projects which have benefited the community at

large. Following our service to the community we have taken yet another step in thedirection of helping our country. At GIK Institute this year on February 7th-9th, we have

provided a platform for the academia to devise ideas and analyze the feasibility of

solutions to our very common problems in the society. The platform is Renaissance14:

Social Entrepreneurship Forum where participating students will think of ways to

solve various issues faced by Pakistani society today.

Renaissance14 is a platform where business and technology shake hands for the mutual

benefit of our society, where solutions to our very common problems are discussed in a

competitive environment. Renaissance14 includes three different modules including

Xploneering Pakistan, Agriculture reforms and Young Leader Speak Out (YLSO).

Xploneering Pakistan is a competition where students are invited to present ideas relating

to Social Entrepreneurship, Strategic Management, and Crises Management, Natural

calamities and man-made disasters. Agriculture Reforms deals with the ways of

minimizing postharvest losses of farm products. YLSO is a series of seminar by leading

industry professionals which will talk about important topics like stress management in

professional life, Team building and corporate Training.

Society of Mechanical Engineers of Pakistan (SMEP) GIKI Chapter is cordially inviting

Module: Agriculture Reforms

Agriculture is the backbone of the Pakistani industry. Pakistan's principal natural

resources are arable land and water. About 25% of Pakistan's accounts for about 21.2%

of GDP and employs about 43% of the labor force. According to the Food and

Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Pakistan is one of the world's

largest producers and suppliers of several commodities including Cotton (4th), Sugarcane

(5th), Wheat (7th), etc.

Agriculture Reforms is an ideas competition determined to come up with innovative ideas

to overcome postharvest losses in Pakistan. The term postharvest losses describes all

losses of produced food between harvest and the marketing processes of said produce.

This includes all steps of the food supply chain, from harvest, to handling, storage,

processing, packing, and transportation.

You would be required to prepare an application revolving around your idea. You must

send the application no later than 3 weeks before the event date. Your application will be

evaluated by our team in terms of innovation and relevance, meaning that it should

convince the jury that once implemented it would reduce postharvest losses.

Once you receive the go-ahead from our team, you will be required to prepare a

presentation of 10 minutes which youll present in front of our judges. This will be an

objective presentation which will require you to present the idea, the cost effectiveness

and feasibility of your idea.

Top three ideas will qualify for the second round. Youll be required to prepare for a 15

minute technical presentation in which well require you to present the technicalities and

problems faced in your idea. This will be a more detailed presentation and questions

asked by the judges will cover any minute detail of your application.

Module: Xploneering PakistanPakistan today faces several complications in vital areas like utilization of energy

resources, education, health care, disaster management; and the list continues. Innovative

solutions are required for these issues. SMEP Xploneering Pakistan will provide educated

youth with an opportunity to contribute towards solving these problems.

Participants are required to choose a problem that Pakistan faces, preferably, in a sector

where improvement is required. You can pick a problem for the below mentioned areasor they can choose any issue that Pakistan faces today. You will be required to prepare a

solution to their problem and present it to our judges. Youll be required to make an

executive summary, a written report and finally a presentation of the proposed solution.

The proposed solutions will be evaluated by government officials and non-governmental

organizations and the best solutions will be considered for implementation. The module

will allow participants to apply their theoretical knowledge and provide a feasible

solution to a problem just as they would in their professional careers.

We are expecting proposals from the participants addressing any of the following

attention-seeking fields in Pakistan:

PROGRAM DETAILS

Round 1: (Registration)

Participants should register their teams at our official websitewww.smepgiki.com The team would consist of a maximum of 4 students preferably from a single

university

Round 2: (Executive Summaries)

Registered teams should send executive summaries of their projects before 27thJan 2013

Short listing of the teams will be done on the basis of submitted executivesummary

The summary must include the name, feasibility, impact, and significance of theproposed solution

Round 3: (Reports)

Shortlisted teams will prepare and submit their reports before 3rdFeb 2014 Reports should be submitted in E-copy form [email protected] Reports must be submitted in a proper format as described forward in the packageRound 4: (Presentations)

The shortlisted teams will be invited to GIK Institute for presenting their ideas. The teams will be giving their presentations at the finale of the Renaissance14

Social Entrepreneurship Forum in front of the judges from industry and

academia who would select the winner based on their reports and presentations.

Post event review to know what worked and what didnt so that the program forthe next year could be further improved.

IMPORTANCE OF THE EVENT

Practically feasible ideas will be generated by the youth of Pakistan that willensure social entrepreneurship, thus uplifting the society through innovative steps

by the community itself.

The perspective of youth of Pakistan will be communicated to the concernedcompetent authorities.

Ideas and planning provided by youth will be innovative and will present a newdimension.

If the idea is viable enough there is high possibility that it can be officiallyimplemented by the government on a national level.

Module: Young leaders Speak OutThe Young Leaders Speak Out (YLSO) provides a comprehensive three-day activities in

which the participants have opportunities to attend various talks, workshops and

experience-sharing sessions about leadership development from renowned successful

national entrepreneurs, engineering leaders and outstanding CEOs and MDs from the

industry.

In developing the contents of the conference, a holistic approach is adapted to seek inputs

from young engineers, expectations from corporation on their needs in molding their

budding leaders, feedbacks from entrepreneur on their needs from engineers, suggestions

from the academia on how to enhance leadership training and development. A thoroughly360 degree analysis has been done to tailor make an all-round two-day program to suit

the needs of todays young engineer.
