Remove HTML from a Job Aid Field Overview

eRecruit provides the ability to format text using HTML applied via the WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) tools within the job ad field.

Applying HTML enables the user to control the format and general appearance of the content. Examples of formatting supported through the WYSIWYG tools in eRecruit include bold, italics, underlined, and/or highlighted text as well as bulleted or numbered lists. In instances where no HTML is desired, Notepad or another comparable text editor can be leveraged to strip or remove HTML formatting from content in a job ad field.

Purpose

This document provides the steps to:

1. Identify the number of characters used within a job ad field, and2. Strip HTML from content in a job ad field.

Considerations

Removing HTML impacts the format and appearance of content e.g. bold text, bulleted lists, and hard returns. Prior to stripping HTML, consideration should be given to editing the content rather than removing all

formatting Content within a job ad field can be formatted as desired using the buttons contained within the tool bar in the

job ad field.

Steps to Determine Word & Character Count

1. From the Homepage, click on the announcement number to access the Vacancy Dashboard

2. Navigate to Step 4 Vacancy Announcement Template to access the job ad content

3. Navigate to the desired field

4. To determine the number of characters used, click on the Word Count icon as depicted in the screen shot below.

Clicking the Word Count icon displays the Word Count pop-up window. The Word Count pop-up displays the counts for:

i. Words number of individual words entered into the field

ii. Character(s) number of characters entered into the field excluding HTML code e.g. <b> and </b>

iii. Approximate character(s) (inc. HTML) number of characters entered into the field including HTML code

5. Click Close to close the Word Count pop-up window

Steps to Strip HTML from a WYSIWYG Job Ad Field

1. On your computer, open the Notepad application

Notepad is normally found in the Accessories folder. Typical navigation path: Start All Programs Accessories Notepad

Leave Notepad open as you’ll be pasting content into Notepad

2. Return to the desired field containing the HTML to be removed

3. Select all the content in the field, so that all content is highlighted

4. Copy the content

Copy content can be accomplished using key board short cuts (CTRL +C), mouse right click, or selecting the Copy button in the WYSIWYG field header

5. Navigate and click in Notepad

6. Paste the content you copied from the eRecruit field into Notepad

Paste function can be accomplished using keyboard shortcuts (CTRL+V), mouse right click, or selecting Paste in the Edit menu in Notepad

7. The content copied from the eRecruit field is now pasted into Notepad. Notice all HTML and formatting has been stripped. See screen shot below.

8. Return to the eRecruit field and delete the content within the field, so that the field is blank.

10. Select all the content in Notepad

11. Copy the content from Notepad

Copy content can be accomplished using key board short cuts (CTRL +C), mouse right click, or selecting Copy from the Edit menu in Notepad

12. Return to the blank eRecruit field and click the HTML button to display the HTML Source Editor pop-up window

13. Paste the content from Notepad into the HTML Source Editor window. See screen shot below.

14. Click the Update button to close the HTML Source Editor window and insert the content back into the field. Notice all formatting has now been removed. Content can be formatted using the tools in the tool bar or manually by inserting hard returns and characters/symbols as desired.
