• New sludge loading dock must be built on the Whale Creek Canal.
• New sludge vessels (3) under construction now. Two vessels must be in reliable operation before existing sludge tank is abandoned.
• Perform Maintenance Dredging in portions of Newtown Creek and Whale Creek – siltation has impacted the existing navigation channel. It needs to be restored to the intended channel depth for safe navigation by sludge vessels.

“NYSDEC SEDIMENT SAMPLING”
Characterize in-situ dredge spoils for disposal (~42,000 CY)Are the spoils hazardous waste? Not according to a round of sediment sampling in 2009.
Provides data for the WATER QUALITY MANAGEMENT PLANto be developed prior to dredging operations
Provides data for the AIR QUALITY MANAGEMENT PLANto be developed prior to dredging operations
Pre-Dredge Activities

“EPA SEDIMENT SAMPLING PLAN”
Before dredging occurs, data from the dredge areas will be gathered in a manner consistent with the ongoing CERCLA RI/FS
This sampling effort is separate from the pre-dredge sediment samples required by NYSDEC for characterizing the dredged material for disposal.
Sediment sampling plan has been approved by EPASame quality assurance planSame parameters as assessed in the RISame laboratories for most analysis
Coordination with EPA
