NIF Control Room Console Remote Viewing

Remote viewing of NIF Operations Control Room consoles is now available

Video sharing hardware has been installed in NIF Control Room• NIF Control Room consoles can be viewed from the Open LabNet network• The remote viewer will “see” exactly what's visible on the local console• Capability provides video only; no audio or remote control

Shot Director will approve all remote viewing requests• Determine there is a valid business reason for granting access• Confirm that remote access will not adversely impact current operations• Confirm the person requesting remote access is authorized

Remote Viewing Session – Process Overview

Participant Action1. Shot RI/User Gain approval from On-Shift Shot Director

• Annotation, pre-shift meeting, call x37009, etc.2. Shot Director Notify the Duty Engineer the remote viewing session is approved3. Duty Engineer Establish remote viewing session:

• NetSupport to the desired controls console• Start a WebEx meeting from the connected OpenLabNet computer• Provide the 9-digit session connection ID

4. Shot RI/User Start WebEx (in remote computer or iPhone) in browser• Select ‘Attend a Meeting’• Enter DE provided 9-digit session connection ID as ‘room ID’• Select host screen to display and enter full screen mode if required

5. Shot RI/User Perform desired alignment, verification, etc• Communicate with operator the (e.g., TAC) via phone.• Notify operator, SD, or DE when complete

6. Duty Engineer Terminate the Remote Viewing Session

Classification review process— Screening review- who/how

• Classified campaigns• Spectrometers

— Campaign memos- who/how• Diagnostic Addendums• Campaign plans

– Protecting known classified– Preventing inadvertent classified data collection

— Approval Manager reviews- who/how

Current NIF classified capabilities— Schedule impacts of classified operations

Requesting new capabilities

Classified operations considerations

A significant fraction of NIF experiments (20-30%) have some classified aspect

Classification Review Process

The risk of improperly identifying classified data or material warrants close attention to detail.

• All campaigns are screened to identity known/potential classification impacts• Quarterly screening by Classification Review Committee

• Includes DC’s from campaigns, facility and OCEC• Identifies campaigns with known or suspected classified aspects• Identifies need for Campaign Classification Memos/updates

• Every experiment is also reviewed for spectrometer use (shot review process)• Can result in potential for collecting classified data even when not intended• Documented in classification review tool in shotplanner

• Classified operations team reviews each shot setup in CMT/SST and ensures setup is consistent with reviews any necessary controls are flowed down to the operations teams

• Specific to the experiment; Result in annotations in AppMan• Some actions are required to prevent collecting unintended classified

Campaign Classification Memos

Important that the Appendix is correct and up to date to avoid delays in experiment approval.

• Drafted by program DCs/Project Engineers• Identify what specific aspects of a campaign

are classified• Includes an Appendix that specifies exactly

what will be used and how it is to be treated• ‘Used’ or ‘not used’• Potential to collect classified (whether

intended or not)• Disposition: no controls required, lock out

(to prevent classified), or run in secure mode

• Used by ops team in conjunction with memo to identify campaign plan

• The Campaign plan links the memo to specific detailed procedures for use by operations

Current/Planned Classified Ops Capabilities

Classified targets (visually unclassified) approved for TARPOS90-239 and TANDM90-348

Electronic classified data collection is limited to simple cameras with fiber outputs only (VISAR, GXD, DISC) . Evaluating SLOS

Requesting new classified capabilities

New diagnostics are evaluated for possible classified impact during the design process, when we are notified— If there appears to be classified potential and features can be added

easily, we often will do so

Contact me or Mark Miller AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE if you are thinking about something new (i.e. not on the above list) that might need to be classified— We will evaluate:

• Is it possible/practical• What a potential timeline might be• If scope is large enough that management must approve this as a separate

project or we can handle it within current resources— New capabilities typically take months or longer to put in place

Failure to plan ahead may mean you can’t take the data you would like.
