instructions to determine the best placement of the tie bar to help manage the site cabling.
Step 3: Attach Remote RMM-800 to Wall or Rack
To attach Remote RMM-800 to a wall, attach the flanges to the openings at the rear of each side, oriented so the other side of the flanges are flush with the rear of the device. The Remote RMM-800 can then be attached to a wall with screws turned through openings on the flanges.
For rack mounting, install mounting screws and lock washers into the mounting holes and tighten firmly to the face of the rack. No space is required between Remote RMM-800 and any component above or below Remote RMM-800.
Step 4: Attach Chassis Ground
Connect the chassis ground on the front face of Remote RMM-800 to a suitable ground such as the frame ground of a rack system or a reliable earth ground.
CAUTION: The chassis ground must be connected to the same earthing electrode conductor as the DC supply system or to a bonding jumper (from an earthing terminal or bus) connected to the earthing electrode of the DC supply system.
The chassis must be located in the same immediate area (such as adjacent cabinets) as other equipment connected to the same DC power system and earthing electrode conductor. The DC system cannot be earthed elsewhere.
The DC power source must be located in the same premises as the chassis.
No switching or disconnecting devices can occur between the earthed conductor of the DC source and the earthing electrode conductor.
Notes: For ground connection,
use 14AWG or larger conductor.
Apply an appropriate antioxidant to the bare conductors before crimping the connector to the connector mating surface.

Step 6: Install SFP Transceivers
Figure 1-7 Two fiber-optic cables are snapped in place in the SFP transceiver installed at left. The locking hasp is closed and the LED is illuminated. Another transceiver has been installed in the SFP port on the right, with a plug in the unused fiber cable ports.
Insert your Westell SFP optical transceivers into place in RMM-800’s SFP ports. If the SFP module has a locking hasp, snap the hasp closed.
Keep the stopper plugs in the SFP’s fiber cable ports until you are ready to connect the fiber cables.
Step 7: Connect the Port Cables
Connect all port cables per your application. For assistance in acquiring cables, contact Westell Customer Assistance.
Note: When connecting the communication ports to an external device that does not share the same earth and signal grounding system, an isolation device should be used.
Important: Any external device with a serial RS232 connection requires a properly installed isolation device such as a Westell A90-RS232-ISO Surge Protection Device (see Figure 1-8). The A90-RS232-ISO protects the Remote from lightning strikes and power surges from equipment outside the plane of the device, such as a generator.

Female DB-9 to 8-pin modular plug DTE to DTE null RS232 cable
Note: Use shielded cable to ensure compliance with applicable emission standards.
Connecting to a Switched Ethernet PortThe switched Ethernet ports allow you to connect Ethernet-capable devices to Remote RMM-800 and allow you to connect Remote RMM-800 to a LAN.
Use an 8-pin modular plug to 8-pin modular plug straight 100BaseT cable to connect one of the switched Ethernet ports (labeled ETHERNET and 3 and 4 on the Remote RMM-800 front panel) to an Ethernet device on your network.
Connecting to an SFPThe SFP optical transceivers allow you to connect devices to Remote RMM-800 using fiber optic cables.
If your SFP module is equipped with a locking hasp, keep the hasp snapped in the closed position when you connect cables.
Insert and lock your fiber optic or other cables into the receptacles on the protruding end of the SFP. When a communications link is established, the LED associated with that SFP port will illuminate.
Analog ConnectionsYou can connect an analog input on Remote RMM-800 to a 4 to 20 mA current loop or a 0 to 10 VDC transducer, which converts a physical input to a current or voltage output. For example, the physical input could be the temperature or voltage which is then converted into a current between 4 mA and 20 mA or 0 to 10 VDC. Remote RMM-800 can be configured to generate events when current thresholds are crossed, or to report input current values at intervals.
The return/input from the sensor connects to the Analog + terminal on Remote RMM-800. The - is connected to the power source negative. Remove the connection block from the front of Remote RMM-800 and loosen screws on the connector terminals to connect the wires. Once the wires are secured by retightening the screws, snap the connector back into the Analog/Relay terminals on the front of Remote RMM-800.
