Day 4 - Thursday – Reading/English Plans –

Lesson/Instructions/Assignments:

Create a PIC collage designing a sign that would be appropriate to hang at the

Mission from Chapter 6. Be creative – I want words and a picture or drawing.

Remember: the sign that was posted on the billboard (example of irony) shows that

life in America is full of good/lucky things. In truth, it is placed in front of the

Mission where people are down on their luck. The billboard emphasizes people who

have money above a place where people are poor standing in line for free food to

eat. Submit PIC collage to Showbie in Remote Learning Week 5 under Thursday.

Directions for submitting:

1. It will save (to library) then click on it again.

Optional: Read a self-selected book for a sustained period of time (20 minutes). I

have posted a link on our 4th Grade Website for FREE AUDIO BOOKS if needed.

Distance Learning – Mrs. Gross’ Lesson Plans: April 20– April 24, 2020

**WHEN COMPLETING A MATH ASSIGNMENT ON PAPER, PLEASE WRITE THE PROBLEM AND

THE ANSWER. The only time you do not have to write a problem is when it is a word problem.

When you have a word problem, you must write the equation needed to solve the problem and

the answer. (Your equation will show the problem needed to solve the word problem and then

of course, your answer.) **

**Remember there are multiple ways to view your math book: Showbie, Pearson Realize

(PearsonRealize.com), Realize Reader app (rr), and the Books app once you download Topic 8. [I

think the easiest way to view the book is to download it to the Books app.] **

I have assigned videos from Pearson Realize too, but it seems that at times it is difficult to view

them. There are other videos to watch.

‘done’ when you complete the assignment and it will send back to me automatically. **

**Important note about assignments: Assignments will be available on Showbie beginning at

8:00 am on the day they are to be completed. **

PLEASE CHECK THE “MATH CLASS DISCUSSION” PAGE IN SHOWBIE – I SEND VOICE MESSAGES

Monday – Prayer

*Christ is risen, ALLELUIA!

* Eternal Father, we offer you the body and blood, soul, and divinity of your dearly beloved Son, our Lord

Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world. Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy

Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world. Amen.

Monday – Science

TEKS: 9B Students describe the flow of energy through food webs, beginning with the Sun, and

will predict how changes in the ecosystem will affect the food web.

Direct Teach/Independent Practice: You have learned what producers, consumers, and

decomposers are and how they interact in ecosystems. As with all systems, each part affects and

even needs the others. St. Paul even uses the image of the different members of the Church

having different roles and needing each other like the parts of the body do. This week you will

learn more about how living things depend on each other in food chains and food webs.

1) Watch “Food Chains for Kids” (Science Folder Week 5 in Showbie).

2) Read Pearson eText pages 402-405 (Lesson 8.3). Answer items 1, 4, 5, and 6.

3) Make another observation of the ecosystem in your back yard. Think about this question:

How do producers, consumers, and decomposers interact in my yard?

Try to identify a food chain that happens in your yard or in your neighborhood. Focus on a

plant, what primary consumer eats that plant, and what secondary consumer eats the

primary consumer. Even if you can’t see decomposers, think about which ones you may have

in your yard and how they contribute to the food chain.

Page 8: Remote Learning - Galatiuk’s Class Lesson Plans Week of ......Vocabulary – Bud, Not Buddy Chapter 5-6 Mission – a shelter offering food, lodging, or other assistance to the needy

4) Go to the assignment discussion for today’s video in Showbie. Type your response there.

Enrichment (optional): Go to eText page 412 to learn more about Rachel Carson and how pesticides

(or, poison for insects, affects ecosystems.

Monday – Social Studies

TEKS: 4A Students will describe the impact of the Civil War and Reconstruction on Texas.

Direct Teach/Independent Practice: You have learned that the Republic of Texas lasted

for nine years on its own until it was annexed into the United States. You also learned that this led

to another war with Mexico and that Texan won once again, this time with the support of the

United States. However, another issue led to more conflict: slavery. Because Texas was a southern

state that allowed people to have slaves and because the South wanted to secede (or, separate)

from the North), they found themselves at war again. This time it was Americans fighting

Americans, the North verses the South in the Civil War.

1) Watch “The American Civil War” (Social Studies Week 5 Folder in Showbie).

2) Go to https://app.studiesweekly.com/online/ and log in.

3) Click on Texas Studies Weekly. Click on Texas Joins a Divided Nation.

4) Read "Texas in the Civil War.”

Instead of answering questions today, you will highlight 6 events that you think are the

most important in the article. You will use these later this week to make a Timeline

Storyboard.

In order to highlight:

Tap and hover over text for a second or two. The highlight tool will pop up and you can

select your color. This works very similarly to how you highlight in your Pearson eText.

Enrichment (optional): Click on Bonus Sources (purple box, top right) to learn more.

Page 9: Remote Learning - Galatiuk’s Class Lesson Plans Week of ......Vocabulary – Bud, Not Buddy Chapter 5-6 Mission – a shelter offering food, lodging, or other assistance to the needy

Tuesday – Prayer Christ is risen, ALLELUIA!

*O Lord our God, between Easter and Pentecost, you speak to us of the Holy Spirit at work in your Church.

Send your renewing fire into the hearts of all your people during this holy season, that we may live with

enthusiasm the life of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy

Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

*Personal Intentions

*Mother Mary, St. Joseph, St. Matthew pray for us. Choose a saint and ask him or her to pray for us.

Tuesday – Science

TEKS: 9B

Direct Teach/Independent Practice: All living things in a food chain are linked together because

each living thing (or, organism) depends on others in order to survive and participate in God’s plan for nature.

However, the connections go beyond just a single chain. Each ecosystem has several food chains that are

linked together. This is what we call the food web.

1) Watch “Study Jams – Food Webs” (Science Folder Week 5 in Showbie).

2) Read Pearson eText pages 406-409 (Lesson 8.3).

3) Complete Chapter 8 Lesson 3 Check (Science Folder Week 5 in Showbie).

*You may use your eText to help you.

*Remember: In numbers 4 and 5, explain why the statements are true or why they are false.

*Remember to elaborate with important details in your answers.

Enrichment (optional): Play “Food Chain Challenge: Woodland” at:

Tuesday – Social Studies

TEKS: 4A

.Direct Teach/Independent Practice: Today you will learn about what kind of jobs the people in

the states of the North and the South had and how they earned money. This is called the economy. You will

also learn about a southern woman named Mollie Bailey who had an interesting life and helped the Confederate

(or, Southern) army.

Page 10: Remote Learning - Galatiuk’s Class Lesson Plans Week of ......Vocabulary – Bud, Not Buddy Chapter 5-6 Mission – a shelter offering food, lodging, or other assistance to the needy

1) Go to https://app.studiesweekly.com/online/ and log in.

2) Click on Texas Studies Weekly. Click on Texas Joins a Divided Nation.

3) Read "Mollie Bailey – Circus Queen and Spy” and “Comparing North and South

Economies.”

4) Answer questions 1-3 for each.

Enrichment (optional): Click on Bonus Sources (purple box, top right of most articles) to learn more.

Wednesday – Prayer

*Christ is risen, ALLELUIA!

*Regina Caeli (Queen of Heaven), a prayer for the Easter season: Queen of heaven, rejoice, alleluia. For

the Son whom you merited to bear, alleluia, has risen as he said, alleluia. Pray for us to God, alleluia. Rejoice

and be glad, O Virgin Mary, alleluia! For the Lord has truly risen, alleluia! Amen.

*Personal Intentions

* St. Joseph, St. Matthew, pray for us. Choose a saint and ask him or her to pray for us.

Wednesday – Science

TEKS: 9B

Direct Teach/Independent Practice: In today’s video you will learn about how changes to

one part of a food chain can affect the whole foo web. For the activity today you will make a model

food chain to show how the different parts are connected.

1) Watch "Food Webs: Crash Course Kids" (Science Folder Week 5 in Showbie).

2) Make your own Model Food Chain: Include: The Sun, a producer, a primary consumer

(that eats the producer) and at least one secondary consumer (that eats the primary

consumer). You may make the model of a food chain in your yard or neighborhood or

of one of the food chains in your Pearson eText.

Directions

A) Cut one strip of paper for each link (or, part) in the food chain. Each strip should be

the same size. Make each strip about 10 centimeters (or, 5 inches) long.

B) Draw a picture of each part of the food chain (one on each strip) and label it.

C) Use tape or a stapler to form the link with The Sun into a circle.

Page 11: Remote Learning - Galatiuk’s Class Lesson Plans Week of ......Vocabulary – Bud, Not Buddy Chapter 5-6 Mission – a shelter offering food, lodging, or other assistance to the needy

D) Take the link for the producer, put it through the link with The Sun, then tape or staple

it.

E) Repeat step D with each of the other links.

F) Take a picture of your Food Chain Model and post it in the assignment discussion for

today.

*If you need help following these directions, watch the Food Chain Model video. It is with

the Morning Message and Morning Prayer videos for today.

*If you do not have the materials to make an actual chain, you may draw and label it on a

sheet of paper.

Enrichment (optional): Add more consumers to your food chain or make a different one. If you do

that, I’d like to see a picture of it too!

Wednesday – Social Studies
