PRS Pool – What and Why?
• The PRS Pool is a cooperation between pipeline operators established in 1987:
− to be prepared in case of emergency repairs
− to share costs for investments and operations
− to maximise experience transfer and competence
− to provide services not readily supplied by commercial market
• PRS Pool is organised as a non-profit membership club, where members share operational costs based on an agreed formula. (Pipeline size, depth, length, transported medium).
• PRS Pool is a large tool pool of emergency preparedness equipment that allows fast repairs of offshore pipelines
• Statoil has the operating responsibility, and has on behalf of the owners and members entered into necessary contracts to ensure the system is operational at all times:
− equipment is stored, maintained and modified as necessary
− ensure access to well trained personnel, equipment and suitable vessels

Remote Hot Tap System - Retrofit Tee concept description
• Remote installation of a structural reinforcement clamp
containing the branch pipe
• Pressure barrier (seal) made by internal weld inside the
branch pipe
• Clamp to contain preliminary elastomeric seals to enable
initial sealing for “blow down” and welding
• Weld head placed inside branch pipe and branch pipe
section flushed, gas filled, cleaned, dried and prepared for
welding
• Weld head using main components from previously built
system for the Remote Operated Welding System (Remote
PRS)
Remote Hot Tap System – Retrofit Tee concept of sealing
• GMAW welding to provide a seal
at the “saddle” intersection of
branch and mother pipe

The welding quality for the Hot-tap is controlled by:
• - Extensive pre-qualification work performed by welding in the actual conditions (Welding parameters,
materials, temperatures, pressure and humidity)
• - The welding environment for the pre-qualification work is picked based on a "worst case" philosophy
(Qualifying for the extremities)
• - The pre-qualification work also covers sensitivity of the normal welding parameters/the equipment
• During the offshore welding, the process is computer controlled and monitored by an online QA/QC
software.
• - Acceptance levels for the welding process monitoring are defined during the pre-qualification period
and loaded into the offshore QA/QC system.
• A close visual inspection is also performed and recorded after each pass offshore.
• Once the welding has been completed, a hydrostatic pressure test is performed as the final verification.
System status June 2012: Several full scale deep water trials have successfully been carried out at water
depths down to 350 msw. The QA/QC system has been proven and the principles are accepted by both
Statoil material department and DnV.
Material testing has been performed for the full scale subsea welds with excellent results.
The Åsgard Subsea Compression project is currently in the process of closing out the last qualification
activities for the system and is targeting first offshore use on a live pipeline system in August 2012.
