    2,000 men from the 36th (Ulster) Division died on the first day, and by its end, an estimated 3,500 soldiers from the island of Ireland had been killed, including 1,167 from the 16th (Irish) Division.

    Belfast School on the Somme There was not an aspect of society in Northern Ireland upon which the Battle of the Somme did not impact.

    15 Instonians, former pupils of Belfast city-centre school, the Royal Belfast Academical Institution, died on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. 703 past pupils served in WW1, 132 or more gave their lives in the struggle.

  • The 15 Instonians killed on that one day reflected life in Belfast city. The son of Samuel Cleland Davidson, founder and owner of the Sirocco Engineering Works in East Belfast, Captain James Cleland Davidson was killed, aged 29.  Second Lieutenant Ernest George Boas was the youngest Instonian to lose his life, aged 19 years.

  • reported missing, is a son of the late Squire Hill, J.P., Ballyclare, and a brother of surgeon Rowland Hill, R.N., formerly of University Street, Belfast, and Mr. Stanley Hill, paper agent, Donegall Street, Belfast. Before the war Capt. Hill was in practice as a dentist in University Street. He is recorded as having signed the Ulster Covenant at Saint Patrick’s school, Jordanstown in 1912. He was a Company Commander in the South Belfast Regiment U.V.F., and joined the South Belfast Regiment on its formation. An unofficial report states that Capt. Hill was seen at a dressing station, but relatives have so far ascertained nothing definite on that matter.” Barry Hill appears on the Army List, March 1917, as serving  with the 10th (Service) Battalion (South Belfast), from the 10/11/1915. He was involved in Rugby and rowing: 'Few men were more generally popular.' Son of Rev. Prof. W. Todd Martin, D.Litt., D.D., College House, College Green, Belfast, Brother of Norman Todd Martin, undergraduate at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge during 1914-15 and then at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich in 1916. He was Lieut. Norman Todd Martin, Royal Field Artillery, from 1916-22. He won the M.C. He survived the war and was a schoolmaster from 1923-29. He attended University College, London, 1930-31 and got a B.Sc.in 1931. He was seconded for Service as Education Officer, R.A.F. in 1936 and recalled to Artillery in May, 1940. He was promoted to Captain and released from Reserve in 1946. He retired to Old Coastguards House, Cushendall, Co. Antrim. Sydney Martin is remembered at the Theipval Memorial, Somme, France.

    North of Thiepval the Ulster Division broke through the enemy trenches, passed the crest of the ridge, and reached the point called the Crucifix, in rear of the first German position. For a little while they held the strong Schwaben Redoubt (where), enfiladed on three

    sides, they went on through successive German lines, and only a remnant came back to tell the tale. Nothing finer was done in the war. The splendid troops drawn from those Volunteers who had banded themselves together for another cause, now shed their blood like water for the liberty of the world.’ -John Buchan

    +NOYES, Claude Robert Barton (Claude)

    Lancashire Fusiliers, 15th Btn, Second Lieutenant. Died 01/07/1916. Aged 27. Known as Claude, he was born on 06/11/1888 in Christ Church Vicarage, Kingstown (re-named Dun Laoghaire in 1921), Ireland, son of the Rev Henry Edward Noyes and Katharine Mary Noyes (née Barton) who were married in 1878 in Dundalk. Claude and his brother Harry attended St Lawrence College, Ramsgate, Kent. Claude obtained a BA degree from Trinity College, Dublin and Harry obtained an MB degree from Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. Claude Noyes was a teacher at Rockport during 1911-12 and, at the outbreak of war, he joined the Public Schools Battalion. He obtained a commission on 04/01/1915 and served with the 15th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers. During WW1 Claude’s brother, Captain Harry Francis Golding Noyes, served with the RAMC in India. He was 37 when he died at Bombay on 05/09/1916 .just nine weeks after Claude died. Captain HFG Noyes is commemorated on the Kirkee 1914-1918 Memorial in India. Claude in remembered at Lonsdale Cemetery, France, Sacred Trinity Church Salford, Manchester; in St Lawrence College Ramsgate, Kent and in Rockport School.

  • +PEAKE, William John

    Royal Irish Rifles.13th Btn. Corporal.MM.19168. Died 01/07/1916. Reported to have been wounded about 20 yards from the German front line during the advance on 1st July 1916. He was subsequently reported killed in action. He was awarded the Military Medal for his excellent conduct on 26th and 27th June, 1916 ‘when he commanded a blocking party in the German trench, and searched several dug-outs, getting two prisoners. When he returned to the sunken road he displayed great coolness under shell-fire, and successfully led back his own party to our lines independently. Before joining the Ulster Division, Adam Stewart was a plumber in the Foyle Shipyard, Londonderry. Only son of Sarah J. Stewart, 21, Albert Street, Londonderry, and Mr Thomas Stewart, Edenmore, Limavady. Member of Carlisle Road Presbyterian Church. Writing to Adam Stewart's mother, the Reverend J. G. Paton, chaplain, said – ‘I am sorry to have to tell you of the death of your son. He was in the great advance of the 1st July, and was next Lieutenant Douglas, of Limavady, when a shell came, killing your son and wounding the officer. Your boy did his part like a man and died without the pain which too many had to suffer. This news has only just come to hand or you would have had it sooner. You have the satisfaction of knowing that you have every reason to be proud of your son, and we all pray that you may be comforted from Above at this time.’ The name of Adam Stewart was read aloud during a special memorial service held in First Derry Presbyterian Church, on Friday, 04/08/1916, to pay tribute to the Presbyterian soldiers of the city of Londonderry, who had died during the first two years of the First World War.Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.     Royal Irish Rifles, 13th Btn. B Coy. Lance-Corporal . Died 01/07/1916. Born in Newtownards where he worked as a general labourer. Before WW1 James was a member of the Ulster Volunteer Force. He married Annie Wilson on 20/12/1907 in Greenwell Street Presbyterian Church. They lived at 44 William Street and had five sons. Initially reported as missing in action; in September 1916 Annie Young was informed by the British Red Cross that he was being held as a prisoner of war in Germany. However, in August 1917 it was confirmed that he had been killed in action on 01/07/1916. Apprentice Boys, LOL 128.
