History
• Started by Dr. Gordy Klatt, a colorectal surgeon
• This is Relay For Life’s 26th year
• 24 hours circling Baker Stadium track at University of Puget Sound (more than 83 miles)
• Raised $27,000 to fight cancer
• Involved about 300 people
First Relay for Life
• Started first team relay event: City of Destiny Classic 24-Hour Run Against Cancer
• 1986: 19 teams, $33,000
Relay For Life Today• In 2009, Relay For Life was held in 21 countries!
• Over 600 communities held Relays• Since 1985, more than $3 billion has been raised!
Relay for Life: The Basics•Participants are encouraged to raise a minimum of $100 each.
•Teams should have a participant on the track at all times.
You get to:1) Recruit team members2) Organize fundraisers3) Pick a campsite theme4) Keep someone on the track at all times

meetings, fundraising, being amazing)

Relay for Life Basics Continued…
Getting (and keeping) Team Members•Door knocking
Get in touch with your floor/building and help those people sign up
•Make regular announcements at club/house/team meetings
Keep reminding people about Relay and make sure they get frequent updates and incentives
to keep them excited and motivated
•Bring your computer to meetings and help your team sign up – we can come with our computers too (we’re here to help!)
•Tell people why you Relay and remind them that cancer touches everyone
Fundraising•Use your personal Relay page
Be sure to personalize the form letter
•Send out emails with links to your page, and letters to EVERYONE•Use template emails and personalize them. Include pictures, why you Relay and personal messages. And really—send it to EVERYONE
•Don’t forget about people from home
•Ask people to sponsor you per hour you pledge to walk
•Host a bake sale or other small fundraisers
•Mention what your fundraising goal is and ask your contacts to help you meet it
•Always tell people what Relay means to you and why you participate.
•Be CREATIVE and HAVE FUN!

• Many different ways to earn points
• Top teams at the end of Relay will win a prize!
Relay Olympics
• Occur throughout Relay (starts now!)
• Cancer-education themed games
• Teams can earn points by participating or winning games
• Examples of games– Water Balloon Toss– Frozen T-Shirt Contest– Pop the Polyp
Cancer Themes & Campsite Decoration
• Each team is required to have a cancer theme

• Need to decorate campsite and/or plan activities
• Examples• Breast Cancer – decorate campsite with bras• Skin Cancer – provide sun screen to participants
