Why We Remember Them• Remembrance Day is a
special day in November.
• People wear a special symbol called a poppy.
• On Remembrance Day we remember people who have suffered and died in wars

Why We Remember Them• One way to find out
about people who died in wars is to visit the war memorial.
• There are names inscribed on the memorial of all the people who died in the World Wars from our area.

• The First World War began in 1914• Millions of men joined the army and went to fight in the war• The conditions were terrible

• Many Soldiers did not sleep for days at a time.
• They were tired, hungry and lonely

Women who Helped • Many nurses went
to the battlefields to care for the soldiers who were injured.
• Many soldiers and nurses were killed in the war.

The End of the First War
• War ended at 11 0’ clock in the morning on 11th November 1918
• Later on, people held street parties to celebrate the end of the conflict

Why do We wear Poppies on
Remembrance Day?
• The paper poppies we wear on Remembrance day are like the real poppies that grew in the battlefields of the First World War
• Real poppies are a beautiful bright red – but they soon die

Why We Remember Them
• After the battle of Somme in the First World War Soldiers returned to see the trenches covered in bright red poppies
• This is why the red poppy became the symbol to remind of those who have gone

Why We Remember Them
• Do you know if someone from your family was a child in the Second World War?
• Your Great Grandparents may have been evacuated to safer places. Many children from the cities were sent to the countryside for their protection.
• How do you think they felt, leaving their home & family behind.

Why We Remember Them Today
• On Remembrance Day people go to a ceremony at their war memorial.
• If you are members of the Badgers, Brownies or Cubs you may attend the memorial service.
• The Queen lays a poppy wreath at the London Cenotaph. She is joined by other members of the Royal family and other senior political figures.

Two Minutes SilenceTo Remember
• At 11 0’ clock on the 11th day of the 11th month people stay silent for two minutes to remember.
