The first cold weather of the season did not keep people from attending the annual Remembrance Day cere-monies at The Royal Canadian Legion in Richards Landing. As has been the case the last several years, it was standing room only by the time the service began.

Students from St. Joseph Island Central School performed “O Canada” in sign language.

The amount of businesses and individuals who lay wreathes continues to grow. The branch is planning to use the poppy fund to sup-port the Northern Cancer Clinic, our local hospital and Youth Education.

Much of Remembrance Day focuses on those who fought in World War I and World War II, with wreath laying ceremonies before the main service at Richards Landing and Hilton Beach cenotaphs as well as in the surrounding areas. Many of those who lost their lives in WWI and WWII still have family in the area.

This year’s guest speaker, Captain Sondi Ryersee (commanding officer CCGS Cape Dundas), gave a

speech on today’s veteran; The struggle many continue to go through when they come home both mentally and physical-ly which sadly results in far too many taking their own lives. While those returning from any war faced similar physio-logical issues, she highlighted the challenges in today’s social media-centric world.

The Children’s Library Presented $500 From R.C.L. submittied by Anne Allaire

The R.C.L. Br. 374 St. Joseph Island presented The Children's Library with a donation for $500. from fundraising such as the summer Bingo. The Branch has been proudly supporting The Chil-dren's Library for over 25 years.

The Children's Library hosts many entertaining and education programs for local and visiting youth. Activities about science, nature, food, build your own fairy garden are just a few of the fun events the library organizes. Privately funded this wonderful community resource has relied on their own planned events such as book sales, clothing collection and a Tea and Fashion Show as well as donations. Now that the Town-ship of St. Joseph is helping with the building maintenance, monies raised can be focused on programming.

It’s not just the snow that has returned, win-ter birds of prey are here too. We spotted our first rough-legged hawk of the season on D Line this week. They get their name from their fluffy legs, an adaptation to keep their legs and feet warm during flight.

The only true artic hawk, rough-legged hawks spend their summers and breed far up north in the tundra, and taiga regions of North Ameri-ca and Eurasia. They winter all across Canada and the US, when the days in the arctic get shorter and it makes it impossible for them to hunt. Their diet usually consists of rodents, eating roughly a tenth of their body mass daily or about ¼ lb. They were once thought to hunt poultry, making them vulnerable to being hunted by farmers.

Winter is the best time to see these birds. You can spot them on telephone polls, or flying across fields or marshes in search of food, the spots on their under wing and bright tails give them away.
