Lots of organizations have good in-tentions, great ideas and big plans.

But most everyone has good inten-tions. There are lots of great ideas and it‟s not that hard to write a big plan.

But what is actual ly being accomplished?

Not too long ago another non profit I‟m involved with was doing some serious soul searching, trying to deter-mine what we had accomplished in two years…and more importantly we needed to learn from what we failed to

accomplish.

There were certainly things to be proud of but we were falling short and getting frustrated.

There was an outside observer to this conversation; a nationally recognized urban planner who had worked with countless organizations and communities across the country. He had an interesting theory and it got me thinking…

He said groups are like engines that oftentimes do not run on all cylinders.

There are times when a group has all the right people but not the ideas. There are times when there are great ideas but not the necessary government participation. There are times when the government is prepared to help but the economics are all wrong.

In short, a well intentioned bunch of bright people can muddle along for a long time before all the cylinders are firing in unison.

Since then I‟ve been trying to identify the cylinders that make up the Sarasota Sailing Squadron. I‟m pretty excited about how our engine is running now but looking forward to the day we are “hitting on all cylinders”.

Our engine requires a commitment from the City of Sarasota. This was accomplished last year and is critical to our success.

Our engine requires a capable Board of Directors. We‟ve accomplished this more often than not but remember; more cylinders are required to make us successful and keep board members engaged.

Our engine requires a General Manager with a long term outlook and passion for the organization.

Our engine requires a comprehensive set of Bylaws and relevant Standing Rules.

Our engine requires volunteer members who are responsible for the lion‟s share of weekly maintenance & repair.

Our engine requires healthy relationships with our “partners on property” like the Sarasota Youth Sailing Program and The Red Cross.

Our engine requires a strong local, regional and national racing program.

Our engine requires an entertaining social calendar providing opportunity for fun and relaxation.

David Jennings

The Burgee - July 2011

Page 3

Our engine requires community outreach, publicity and activism.

When I think back over the last 4 years I‟ve been on the Board there were times when one or more of these cylinders were in fantastic shape but others were lacking.

Now, as I look forward to the next couple of years I see we have a chance to hit on more cylinders than I‟ve experienced in two decades at the Club.

Take a look at the ballot for our next election. Review the proposed changes to the Bylaws. If you haven‟t met Craig Bridges, our new manager, stop by within a week of reading this and introduce yourself. Be prepared to see a growing calendar of events as 2012 draws near and remember…your participation is absolutely critical to making our engine run on all cylinders.

It‟s going to be a phenomenal season.

Gregg Knighton Visits Squadron POSTED September, 3rd 2011: It's been a good day. Gregg

was feeling good, and this morning his eye sight was good. As it usually does, it fades when he gets out of bed (right side) or if he gets over tired, but he's feeling stronger physically every day.

When this detour started in our lives, we decided we would take it one day at a time, one step at a time. We set goals and then did whatever we could to achieve them.

Today he had a goal to go out to the Sailing Squadron to sup-port his friends and clients during the Labor Day Regatta. We knew we wouldn't be able to stay too long, but he really wanted to see the sailors, boats and water. I think just being out there again was therapy in it self, but seeing so many friends was a wonderful thing.

For those of you who were there, thank you for your never end-ing support and well wishes. It means more than you can imag-ine. He was a little tired when we made it home, but still had a smile on his face. We would like to thank Bob, Alan and Jessica for the wonderful "Welcome Back" banner and everyone who signed it.

For those of your racing this weekend, we wish you good luck

tomorrow, and for those of you working to make the weekend a success, you are doing just that. Keep in mind that next year we have a goal to be out there with you....or maybe even sooner than that. That's the thing about goals, they can change all he time. Thanks again to all of you, and it was great to see you.

The Luffing Lassies had a very quiet June, July and August. With many of our Lassies travelling to enjoy the summer, we did not have any formal events on the water. Many of our Lassies enjoyed fun SSS outings on Wednesday nights as well as Friday night fun races.

Off the water, we were very busy organizing our upcoming season. Linda Tiffan will lead the Lassies as Captain this year.

Other Lassies fulfilling leadership roles in-clude: Linda Schwartz, Ursula Olson, Rachel Harvey, Michelle Lee, Diane Banyard, Gail Seidman, Robin Wall, Nanette Reuss and Jane Owens. Many Lassies worked tirelessly checking, repairing and upgrading our fleet of Prams and Sunfishes.

We are very happy to share that our Learn-to-Sail class was completely full. We welcomed fifteen new sailors on August 28 for our week long class. As of writing of this article, our new sailors enjoyed two days

of fine weather and good winds. We hope they will con-tinue sailing with us through what promises to be a fun 2011-2012 season.

The Calm Before the … Storm?

SQUADRON DATE 062211 When I arrived this morning I entered through the back door which was properly locked and started to make coffee and then turning to the right noticed that the new touch screen cash register was wide open with the change drawer (still full of change) sitting on the bar counter, the doors to storage underneath were wide open as were the locked drawer beneath the cash register and the next two drawers also. I called our Com-modore, David Jennings and informed him of what I found and then dialed 911 to report a suspected breaking and entry and possible theft. I also noticed that a sign in the bottom of the cash drawer said that a safe was locat-ed in the double door storage area and there was no safe there. I informed the person on the other end of the 911 line of all of this and got the usual dumb questions and instructions. Shortly a law enforcement person called me back to find out if I was not double reporting a theft that had happened yesterday in which the safe was stolen. I told them I did not know of a theft yesterday and then described again the scene that I saw. She then said she would send a detective out.

Fortunately, we had a Wednesday Work Party today. Jaye Villain took care of securing the south window where they entered yesterday and Ron & Don went to the Longboat Key Hardware store and installed 3 hasps com-plete with bolts and not screws. Stu Barnette made the sliding bar window easier to secure and earlier cleaned up the Golf Cart and its storage area. For the other work party accomplishments, Jaye Villain and Alan Titcombe pulled the east corner of the wood ramp to the Whaler up so they could drill and secure it with a long screw. Some-time during this morning‟s hectic situation Tom Fronczak walked in without shirt and sweating and informed me that he had been working since 7 AM on tearing out the remaining 2 X 10‟s from the unused small picnic area among the Australian Pines to the west of the entrance road. Later, David Jennings and maybe someone else helped him dispose of the debris. Ruth Nordman fortu-

nately took care of the bar being helped by Dave Bridges while her husband took down all the open house signs and sanded and varnished several of the small tables on the Main Dock Deck.

SQUADRON DATE 062911 A hot, dead wind day with several new members showing up for a change. As Ruth & Wanda were not present Ron Birney got stuck with the job of stocking the bar. I helped with the water but that‟s all. Later Glen Welcher helped stocking the bar and car-ried out a bunch of boxes to the dumpster. Early on Dean Isner and Mark Noble dug out the last support piling and raked the area so we can move the picnic table back and start using it again. Mark later spread the green chairs around the porch tables. I blew off the Pavilion so Laurel Robinson-Kaiser could use it for her sailboard class and Norris Elswick could move the plastic tables back in and set it up for the weekend. He also cut a Carrotwood tree down at the drive thru to the north side of the compound, ”weedeated” around the sidewalk and ended up by blow-ing the debris off. Larry MacMillian earlier had done some of the weed eating around the club and Norris finished it. Bob Makowski showed up later and completely cleaned the large BBQ grill. Brian also came a little later and showed me what he did to the small BBQ on the Main Dock Deck (all ready for use) and pulled an old Squadron dinghy east of the BBQ so he could begin fixing its de-crepit rubrail with fire hose. Mark Shiftman and Ed Steemstra changed out a bulb in the flood lights at the Work Area and went to Grainger on New 301 to get re-placement bulbs.

SQUADRON DATE 070611 Back to heat but very over cast so you don‟t feel it till the sun comes out which it did later on. Stu Barnette arrived early and started to work early. He pumped up the tires on the Golf Cart, began the stocking of the bar, raked the seaweed to the side on the ramp and drove Big Ben down to Marine Max and filled it up for the next time. Ron Schwied (a long time member, he retired from the School Board yesterday) and Dean Eisner got the worst job of the day replanting 3 very

large piling over by the new table area where the old base of the Radio Station Tower at the edge of the water is located to delineate the area so we could remove two old railroad ties that people tend to trip over. They were both covered with sweat when they finished. But Dean had to leave afterwards while Ron stayed and moved the chairs back to the tables everywhere. Ron & Don cleaned the plywood tops of our indoor trash cans, cleaned the BBQ grill at the BBQ and replaced a screen on the east entrance to the porch and then finished up by replacing a larger screen at the southeast corner of the porch. Bill Nordman worked outside while his wife took care of the bar just like Wanda would. I changed out 5 dead bulbs behind the bar. Jay Villain & Alan Titcombe got one of the most challenging jobs of the morning to attach brass hinges to the regatta notice boards in the Pavilion and hang them from the rafters so they would be out of the way until they were needed for a regatta. This way no-body has to carry them back and forth to the RC storage room upstairs in the Small Boat Storage Building which rapidly becomes a pain in the neck.

SQUADRON DATE 071311 A very muggy and hot day with lots of sun and some brief showers mid morning which cooled those working outdoors. Norris Ellswick got the worst job of all and that was to move 3 very large piling at the old radio station tower farther north. Fortu-nately, David Jennings arrived in time to show him where they were to go and helped mightily with the procedure. Now we have another space for boat storage. Dave Jen-nings later removed staples and signs for the Hurricane Seminar event. Dave Bridges volunteered to take 2 deck chairs down to Knighton Sails and get them to make seat covers for them. . He promised he will keep after them and see that they are finished ASAP. Ruth Nordman and her husband Chuck came early with Ruth taking care of the bar and Chuck working outside on various projects. Stu Barnette, who came earliest, used the Golf Cart to pick up various yard trash and later he tore out the small totally broken ramp connecting the Dinghy Launching Ramp with the floating dock next to it. Ron & Don re-placed three handles on the sliding doors for the Beer Box behind the bar. Laurel Robinson went to Sarasota Hardware and bought for the Squadron a dead bolt to be installed at the ladies shower facility in the Stone House.

SQUADRON DATE 072011 Hot with a dead flat no wind calm at least until after I left at 11 AM. Two new members, Thomas & Jacquiline Pynn, came early and straightened up the tables and chairs in the Pavilion and porch areas and picked up trash and broken con-crete blocks. Those not broken they put by the side of the road and later loaded them into the golf cart for dis-posal, all under a very hot sun with no wind. As usual, Stu Barnette arrived first, stocking parts of the bar, pick-ing up outside trash, measuring a missing panel for a ramp for fixing next week, checked the boats for gas and filled the Mako„s tank. Ruth Nordman did Wanda‟s bit at the bar with her husband Chuck digging a ditch to anchor a wood mulch barrier for the planting area next to the Main Dock. David Jennings did his usual job trim-ming a nondescript bush between the water and Pavil-ion and picked up trash that has been down there for

years while Jaye Villain built a bulletin board for the offi-cial federal and state forms posted in the kitchen

SQUADRON DATE072711 Hot with lots of clouds to the west, thinning out to the east but building from the south and after I left light rain at home about 12:30 PM. Stu Barnette was the first to arrive and picked up some trash outside and stocked a bit of the bar to be augmented later by Ruth Nordman who finished the job and cleaned the bar completely. Her husband, Chuck, volunteered to dig out big weeds that grow where fences are located. Dean Eisner and Ed Fisch got the never ending job of taking all the mixed up stuff out of the big lockers in the work area, sorting it and putting it back where it belongs. Ron Schwied and Bill Waggner blew off the Pavilion, BBQ area, Main Dock area and put tables and chairs back in each area. Mark Noble pulled up and dug out Brazilian Pepper and Australian Pines that grow on the north side of the road on the way to the Hoist. Afterwards, he, Ed Steenstra and David Jennings emptied water and lots of trash out of dinghies in the Dinghy Rack and those next to it, as besides being unsightly it is a favorite breeding place for mosquitoes.

SQUADRON DATE 080311 In the middle of our seem-ingly standard Hot Summer we got the usual turnout for this date and one new member who got and did the roughest job of all which was to dig out what I call BIG WEEDS, as they are big and like to grow where we had former fence lines and can‟t be cut with a mower. Carlos Schaefer, new member and originally from Argentina and now from Columbia, did exactly what I told him to do which was to dig out BIG WEEDS and pile them by the roadway and we would pick them up later. Alan Titcombe and I picked them up after we installed a new 8 foot bulle-tin board in the kitchen back of the large freezer to dis-play the required federal informational forms for employ-ees. As usual Allen did 99% of the work. Ron & Don fin-ished installing a dead bolt on the women‟s restroom door in the Stonehouse while Dave Bridges and Ruth Nord-man stocked the bar. Chuck Nordman along with David

The Burgee - July 2011

Page 7

Jennings raked seaweed out of the ramp area while Da-vid pulled vines off two sable palms and cut up a limb in front of the yard trash dumpster. Bill Waggener continued installing a plug on a long electrical cord but had to take it home so he could use some special instruments to find where the short was. Ron Schwied and I carried an old bulletin board up to the RC storage room and later Ron blew pine needles off the floor and put tables and chairs where they belong and then did the same to those on the porch, after he and I moved the picnic table out to the concrete apron around the Pavilion. I don‟t know what else they did but I saw Mark Shiffman and Ed Steemstra empting rain water out of the dinghies at the floating dock. The Squadron got a major deluge last night with the road between Marine Max and Mote Marine totally flood-ed this morning. It‟s what I refer to as Mote Lake.

SQUADRON DATE 081711 A hot overcast sky at first with it getting much hotter as the cloud form making it overcast moved away. Ruth Nordman came first and started working at the bar and low & behold Wanda came also later on and helped her. Wanda has been out with carpal tunnel problems. Ron & Don began patching small screens on the southeast porch corner and then took down a large 7 by 6 foot screen to find out that there was no replacement screening in stock although two large rolls had been stored in the kitchen storeroom. Where it went no one knows. Larry MacMillian continued weed eating that he had begun last week and had to stop as the spool that held the line broke. Fortunately Mark re-placed it during the week. The big Ballbuster job of the day was to install 4 blue barrels on an old float that Mark had pulled out of the water for us to work on this Wednes-day. However, we were only able to install two barrels and will add two more barrels next Wednesday. Several stainless steel bolts would not unscrew and will have to be cut out with a saw next week. The Ballbuster‟s doing this work were Chuck Nordman, Stu Barnette, Ron Schwied and myself running around getting tools, etc. for the people doing the work. Alan Titcombe and Bill Wag-gener worked all morning on taking apart a large porch bulletin board with bad cork and attempted to scrape it off with great difficulty. Hopefully we will have one back to-gether by next Wednesday.

SQUADRON DATE 082411 We have two major projects this morning, finish putting a floating dock together and finish corking a large bulletin board and a small one that resides on the front porch. For the first, Stu Barnette started work on installing a float on the floating dock just before 8 AM with Ron Schwied arriving about 8:30 AM and helping. After a few hours of work the section was launched by the hoist and pulled over to where the Mako is secured. After tracking down a suitable section of ply-

wood and getting Jay Villian to cut a 6 by 3 foot section out of it our workaholic recent retireree, Ron Schwied, carried the section over to the connecting ramp and nailed it in place. Stu and I moved the float section over and discovered that there were no hinges to connect to. I told Mark Shiffman our tech who said he will order one by next week. So we wait. Jaye Villain and Alan Titcombe worked on the two bulletin boards and were finishing put-ting the trim on the larger one as I left a little after 11 AM as I had to go to Walmart and pick up Insulin for Dona. Ruth Nordman and Dave Bridges stocked the bar early and then transferred to other jobs with Dave helping Dave Jennings rake up seaweed on the beach and dispose of it outside the gate up under the large plant growth on the berm that surrounds the fenced compound. Sam Hitch, a new member, helped Ruth at the bar for a while and then helped Ed Steemstrum blow the pine needles, etc. off the Pavilion floor with Ed using his motorized blower and Sam using the Squadron‟s. Chuck Nordman worked out-side on various things and trimmed some of the bushes back of the clubhouse. Larry MacMillian evidently loves to weed eat and today showed up with long pants and showed me how he had fixed the cutting head of the weed eater so it would work properly. Ron & Don straight-ened up the chairs on the front porch, Pavilion and Main dock deck with those outside being blown around consid-erably by last night‟s storm. David Connolly told me this morning that wind speeds are supposed to have reached at least 40 knots last night.

Remembering Kathy Waggener

1938-2011 By Bill Waggener, Sr.

Kathy and the Sarasota Sailing Squadron

Kathy and our family literally grew up with the SSS. In the early 1960's we had a 21-foot wooden sloop, de-signed and built in St. Petersburg. The SSS didn't have facilities to dock our boat so we kept it at the Holiday Inn on the north trail. Although we would occasionally visit the Squadron we didn't join until sometime in the late 1960's. By that time the 21 foot sloop had gone it's way and we were sailing a Cape Dory 10, two adults and two small children.

Kathy's sailing life changed forever when she carpooled with Lilly Kaighan to Church of the Palms preschool. Lilly convinced Kathy to join her and her friends at the SSS to sail and race prams. As they say, the rest is history. The group originally called themselves the Sarasota Sailing and Sinking Society, or something to that effect. They eventually settled on the Luffing Lassies, a nod to Lilly's Scottish heritage.

The Luffing Lassies, Life in the Slow Lane

Kathy loved every minute with the Luffing Lassies and served one term as President. One of her more memorable achievements was to help organize the water ballet. In addition to performing (something memorable from Sarasota High School days), she also provided the mesh tu-tu's. Although she eventually moved up to the Sunfish with “Bigger Tigger” she was always partial to her pram, “Tigger.”

Life was not all fun and games with the Luffing Lassies. At Christmas, the Lassies got down to serious business. As they prepared to sail, the wind freshened and they could hear a “ho, ho..ho” coming from the bay. And who should appear in a tiny yellow boat but old St. Nicholas, no, no it's Kathy Waggener! Santa Arrives!

The Youth Sailing Program (YSP)

With Kathy's love of her pram and love of children, it was only natural that she should want to create a sailing program for children. A number of others at the Squadron shared her interest in a youth sailing program and Pat Murphy used his renowned Irish charm to talk Kathy (aka Kathleen Connolly) into being one of the founders and first president of the YSP. Using donated Luzzier prams, Kathy and a group of volunteers started the first program with six lessons, the first being practicing capsizing. Among the first volunteers were Kathy, Dave Bridges, Bill Waggener, Sr. , Bill Waggener, Jr, Bob Lindsey and Ben (of Big Ben fame) and Mary. (Sorry if I have left anyone out, I can only remember five or six things at a time)!

The YSP was very rewarding to all involved and Kathy watched many of her former students go on to racing at the highest levels.

When I look at the (pictures), I miss Kathy but I am sure that I will meet her at the other end of that fog bank .

“We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch - we are going back from whence we came. “

In Memoriam By Pat Murphy

EDDIE HAUG, 94, died July 14. He is survived by his wife, Virginia and a son & daughter and two sisters one being Ruth Ball. He was a WWII Army Veteran and a member of several clubs and a volunteer for Girls Inc., Manasota Lighthouse, Meals on Wheels and for nearly 25 years a Ballbuster at the Squadron. As he got older he confined his activities to stocking the bar every Wednes-day along with Wanda. He had the kind of dedication that we will miss.

JAMES BRIAN MURPHY 66, my younger brother who grew up in Sarasota and learned to sail in one of the

earlier pram fleets at the old City Pier. He received his doctorate in Optometry from Ohio State University in 1974 with honors and after a brief practice in Sarasota joined Dr. John Marcin (a notorious sailor) at the Eye Center on Cortez Road in 1977. He was involved heavily with numerous organizations in Bradenton and was presi-dent of the West Coast Florida Symphony for several years and had many patients from the Sarasota Sailing Squadron. He is survived by his wife Kris and two daughters, Tara and Molly. Funeral services were held Sunday August 14 at Christ Episcopal Church on Mana-tee Ave. I haven‟t seen as many people in one place since I left New Orleans in 1967. This wasn‟t supposed to be.

"Ring For Victory", Ring for Sorrow" and "Ring for Joy"

Dr. Jefferson Penfield died on February 5th. He was 83.

By Bob Twienem

Jeff was a true inspiration to us all in the way he approached life and sailboat racing.

He was a gifted sailor and a fierce competitor. Even so, Jeff took equal joy in others successes as much as his own. He was always the first to congratulate a competitor on a race well sailed.

He was a true gentleman in all his interactions and his love of sailing and racing Flying Scots was infectious. In 2004 Jeff won the Flying Scot Senior Division of the National Championship regatta. He named his boat Damfino yet we all knew that Jeff knew exactly where he was going!

One thing about Jeff that many of us sailors did not know was that he was also a terrific piano player.

A bell in his memory is ready to be played at the squadron.

Sixty-two days in and a healthy dose of welcomes and congratulations lat-er, I‟m left with a abundant feeling of excitement for the “squadron” and it‟s mission of providing a reasonable venue for sailing and sailing related activities.

In reflecting on the last couple of months I would be remiss if I did not recognize the many volunteers that

have rolled up their sleeves and chipped in. As you know volunteerism is at the root of our success now and in the future. I wish I could list all the members that have gone

above and beyond, but the list would fill the page. Thank you for doing your part!

The focus of the last couple of months in brief was facil-ity maintenance, grounds keeping and storage issues. All have been addressed and or solved with the help of the volunteers and office staff.

We are currently focused in on the 65th Labor Day Re-

gatta and have what may be a record number of volun-teers; 85 at deadline (thank you, again). It‟s great to see the passion and activity from the membership.

I hope to see everyone over the weekend and please feel free to introduce yourselves to me.

Smooth Sailing—The Manager’s Report

By Craig Bridges

By Bob Miller

We had about a dozen boats find their way to the fin-ish at "D" and most touched it gently and poured a bit of "Bud" or "Corona" over the mark. Rain later washed off the mark and it was a fitting end to this special race event. Rudy on Hot Tuna was first to finish followed by MoAir, Spars & Stripes and RunAway in the Non Spin Class. Treo lead the group of cruisers and Moonfleet was our biggest vessel on the H20. Vinny "Ba-da-Bing" had his ship at sea and he also found his way to D. Thanks to all who partici-pated. No official race results were calibrated for this event.

Summer has been a little hit or miss on getting out sail-ing for the industrious local Flying Scot Sailors. The regulars of the summer sailing have been Ron, Barry, Bren, Bob, Norris, Mike, Tom and Winny, with occasional appearances by Don, Stewart, John, Susan, Fred & Kath-erine. We have continued to practice our skills using rabbit starts and windward leeward courses. Good oppor-tunities for sail handling, boat handling and tactics. With

the short courses and using the rabbit starts the fleet stays tight for some good racing and immediate feedback on what is working and what is not in the boat speed department.

Now that fall is coming there are more opportunities for some good fleet racing. Fairly nearby, the Tampa Sailing Squadron is hosting regattas at Apollo Beach on Sept 10th and October 15th. These regattas will be a good

chance to mix it up with the Tampa racers before the season down here gets into full swing. The Florida District schedule is out and the early couple of dates to put on your calendar are the first weekend in October in Miami and the first weekend in November in Sarasota.

We are looking forward to seeing our snowbird friends shortly and hearing about their summer adventures.

Flying Scot Fleet 36 News.

By David Livingston

This summer was the busiest sum-mer on record with 525 sailors learn-ing how to sail or sailors who were brushing up on skills they learned in previous summer classes. "At the beginning of the summer, I was wor-ried about our numbers due to prob-lems with the economy." said David Livingston, SYS Di-rector.

"If you add in our numbers for The Field Club and the Sarasota Yacht Club, where we also teach youth sailing, our program has seen 650 kids in the area wanting sailing instruction."

This continued success demonstrates why we are one of the biggest and best run summer camps in Florida. Classes were held for kids who were at least 5 years old through 18 years old. The SYS utilized their aging fleet of forty optimist sailboats, 420 sailboats and the occasional few boats that end up getting donated to the youth sailing program.

Before next summer, the Sarasota Youth Sailing is embarking on an ambitious fund raising campaign to replace these Optimist sailboats which are close to 15 years old. Stay tuned for further details on this! The program would like to thank the SSS for their continued

support of Youth Sailing. This summer we have worked closely with Commodore Jennings and the Board, including new manager Craig Bridges, Mark Schiffman and all the other staff. This relationship helps everyone as new sailors to the SYS means new candidates for membership to the SSS.

While the summer has been packed with kids learning to sail, there were a few opportunities for our sailors to travel to national regattas. Six sailors went out to Califor-nia for the US Youth Multihull Champs and did very well. We had other sailors sailing at Laser Nationals and North Americans as well as the Opti Nationals in California. There is not much rest between the summer and year round program which will start on August 27th. As usual, we will operate five race teams which include: Green Fleet (beginning racing), Red, White and Blue (Intermediate), 420 and Laser (Advanced), and High School Race Team. This year we expect another seven or eight high schools will be practicing each week at the SSS. For sure it bodes to be a busy fall too with our groups travelling at least once a month to an away regat-ta.

Everyone is looking forward to the Squadron's 65th An-nual Labor Day Regatta where the youth sailors can mix it up with some of the best kids in Florida. Thank you to the Sarasota Sailing Squadron and their continued sup-port of Sarasota Youth Sailing!

Tip of the Month: Now is the time to go

over your boat with a fine tooth comb look-

ing for wear and broken (or about to be

broken) parts. It doesn't matter how fast or

smart you are tactically if you have a break-

down.

2011 Election

Bylaw Propositions There are three propositions to be considered by the

membership in November this year, each containing one or more proposed changes to the Squadron‟s Bylaws.

Ballot Propositions Explained

Proposition #1: “Staggered 2-year Terms” is intended to address the issue of lack of continuity that occurs when a substantial number of directors do not run, or are not re-elected after their 1-year term. The present 1-year terms provide little opportunity for directors with significant agendas to accomplish their goals before another election looms. Once implemented, the pro-posed amendment would require that five directors be elected in odd years, and the other five be elected in even years – each serving a 2-year term.

Proposition #2: Contains several amendments, mostly related to realignment of Director duties.

Proposition #3: Removes all dependencies on specific editions of the “Burgee” from the Bylaws, reflecting the recent change to the Burgee‟s publication schedule, and recognizing the Squadron‟s other communications mechanisms, such as the “Breezy Blast” and the Squad-ron‟s web site.

Two workshops have been scheduled, to provide an opportunity for members to discuss these proposals:

Tuesday, 13th September 6-7pm

Tuesday, 11th October, 6-7pm

Each workshop will be followed by the regular monthly Board meeting.

The full text of each of the propositions can be viewed online at http://sarasotasailingsquadron.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/2011-Election-Propositions.pdf
