Information Sharing Project
Taking advantage of:
New technology for interconnecting PCs,
Modern storage capacities 100MB,
High-resolution video displays (SVGA)
Enabling:
Easy Access to Large amounts of inter-
related data in a user-friendly form.
File ...
Desktop Workstations
Current Technology
Vast amounts of data in the form of shared files can be kept on the file server.
Users can access that data, but must first copy file to/from own workstation,
Then view file using normal application (e.g. WordStar, 1-2-3, etc.)
Makes viewing multiple related files very tedious and time-consuming.
Proposed Solution
Users create normal text files in the normal way, but add extra little nuggets of linkage information.
Workstations run special program that retrieves and displays these files, interpreting the little nuggets instead of displaying them as plain text.

Periodic Table of Elements
1 H Hydrogen gas electrolysis of water
2 He Helium gas sucked from ballons
3 Li Lithium met electrolysis of lepi..
4 Be Berylium met fermentation of berries
5 B Boron sld processing mined bora..
6 C Carbon sld pressing coal
7 N Nitrogen gas distilled from air
8 O Oxygen gas distilled from air
9 F Fluorine gas evaporating floor wax
Future Extensions
There is a format for digitised pictures, called GIF (Graphics Interchange Format). It should be possible to embed pictures inside files and have them seamlessly displayed.
The “linkage nuggets” could be extended to also include formatting commands, such as justifying text, changing font size, arraying data in columns, etc.
