FEB/MAR 2016 REMARKS FROM ST. MARKS PAGE 3

“REJOICE! IT’S LENT” Rejoice! It’s Lent. Sounds strange, doesn’t it? Joy and Lent just do not seem to go together. Lent is a somber season. In popular practice Lent possesses all the marks of a six-week funeral. “The paraments,” said one author, “are the deep purple of a dowager’s dress.” Hallelujahs are silenced within the service of the liturgy. Although meaningful and poignant, somber hymns are sung, a far cry from the hymns of Christmas and Epiphany seasons. Social celebrations are cancelled - or at least curtailed. Our attention is focused exclusively on the crucified body of a young man dying in agony on a criminal’s cross. Our emotions are moved to tears by such words as suffering, passion, and death. All of this emphasis on the cross is intended to drive us to repentance and to acts of fasting. But Lent is so much more. Lent is a time to turn to the Bible - a time to study God’s word and commune with him in prayer. Lent is a time to lift up the cross - not as a pious whip to inflict self-punishment upon ourselves, or as a gavel of judgment to condemn the wrongdoings of others. Rather, Lent is a time for us to lift high the cross. Lift it high enough to permit the first rays of Easter morn to reflect upon its surface so that the cross might become a beacon of light for all

the hopeless, desolate, and despairing people of our world. Lent is a time of renewal and of the restoration of our faith in the redemptive activities of God in history. Late one evening, a pastor was in the pulpit practicing his Lenten sermon. In the back of the darkened church sat his small son. The sight of his father talking seriously to a church filled with empty pews struck the little boy as being very funny- he laughed. Hearing his laughter, the father went to his son and gently said, “don’t you know that we don’t laugh in church during Lent?” “WHY?” asked the boy. “Because Lent is a time when we remember that Jesus died for us,” responded the father.

“Is Jesus dead?” inquired the son. “No,” answered the father, “Jesus died, but he didn’t stay dead. He rose from the grave and is living in you and me right now.” The little boy thought for a moment, and then he said, “I think - I think it must have been - the Jesus in me that made me laugh.” Because Jesus lives in us, we face Lent with joy in our hearts, not the hilarious kind of joy where we shout out “Hallelujah!” – not even the spontaneous and innocent joy expressed in the laughter of a little child - rather, the joy of Lent is the quiet, mature joy that comes from meditation and contemplation of what God has done for us. This kind of joy will open up our callous hearts and prepare for us to really appreciate that morning - when a tomb stood empty in a garden and our Lord was released to conquer all powers and to exercise all authorities as he inhabits our world and us. Forever!

CHURCH COUNCIL APPROVES A SIXWEEK SABBATICAL FOR PASTOR CHUCK: March 28 – May 12. Following Easter (March 27), I will take six weeks for a time of study and research- a sabbatical. I will be back leading wo rsh ip on May 15 th , Pen tecos t and Confirmation. I shared with the Mutual Ministry and Finance Committees and ult imately Church Council, that I would like to take the time to worship/visit six churches that worship between 125 -175 a Sunday (like St. Mark’s), and are liturgical. Their lead instrument of worship must be organ, supplemented with other instruments. I want to do as close to an “apples to apples” search as possible. Will all six churches be Lutheran? No, I hope to visit an Episcopalian church, as well as a Methodist, Presbyterian and United Church of Christ Church. What am I looking for? Well, I will contact the Pastor and let him/her know when I am coming to visit. I want to observe and experience their worship practice for that given Sunday. During the week I will invite the Pastor out to lunch to discuss some of their church’s “highs” and lows”-when it comes to worship, what has or has not worked for them. I will also invite out (separately) to lunch the Director of Music (like Judy) and the Director of Family Ministry/youth person (like Dawn). I want to hear from them some of their successes and things that did not go as they had hoped. I want to hear about their programs of ministry, specifically worship, music, family ministry. I want to hear about their joys and disappointments. I want to be able to bring back some of their program ideas to St. Mark’s, a liturgical church that worships between 125 – 175 people. What worked well for them might not necessarily work for St. Mark’s. What proved unsuccessful for them might be worth our consideration in trying. Why a Sabbatical? Well, these are challenging times for churches, (our church) particularly mainline Protestant churches, liturgical churches. It is my hope, my prayer that I might learn a few things that will help us grow here in the valley. And, who knows, I might be able to share something with the staff of the churches I meet, share some of the

programs of ministry of St. Mark’s that might help them grow. Who will cover the six Sundays I’m gone? David Lintvedt will preach and lead the four non-communion Sundays: April 10, 17, 24 and May 8th; Pastor Paul Bartlett (member of St. Mark’s) will cover the two communion Sundays-:April 3 and May 1. W h a t a b o u t P a s t o r a l e m e r g e n c i e s (hosp i ta l v is i t s , funera ls , homebound communions)? Two areas of coverage here. One, Pastor Paul Bartlett has offered to be available in such instances. Second, other area clergy: Pastor Nick Pence, Palm; Pastor Becky Eisenhart, St. John’s; and Rev. Deborah-Rahn- Clemens, New Gosh have offered to provide emergency pastoral care. I have covered for t hem when they we re on sabba t i ca l . I thank the members of Church Council Finance and Mutual Ministry for their support and approval of my Sabbatical next year. I hope that you, the members, will also see the wisdom of my taking the six weeks to do this and also your blessing. Pastor Chuck

CHEERFUL STEWARD? I’ve tithed for most of my Christian life. It’s a blessing to be able to contribute to the work of the

Lord. Yet recently God showed me I’m not a cheerful giver. I write the check, but not with the right attitude, I look at it more as an expense, a bill to pay, rather than a privilege to give thanks to God for. God doesn’t need my money. God could get it anywhere he chooses. Yet he gives me the opportunity to partner with him in doing his will on earth. When I pay my tithe begrudgingly, it’s just like my wife getting me a birthday gift because she has to. If she doesn’t enjoy doing it and rather skip the event altogether, I take no pleasure in opening the gift. It was given under compulsion, not freely. A gift shows our appreciation for the other person. It conveys we value them highly. If it’s a chore for me to give, there’s something wrong with my heart. I’ve forgotten who it rightly belongs to. Money doesn’t belong to me. Like everything else, it’s on loan. I want to joyfully give it back! – Copied

MID-WEEK LENTEN SERVICES: “BY FAITH”

What is faith? The verse from He-brews 11:1 defines it in this way:

“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” Our mid-week Lenten services will focus on the book of Hebrews, especially the eleventh chapter. The first four weeks provide a journey through the faith of the Old Testament figures, especially Noah, Abraham, Moses, and the Israelites. The fifth week brings us to Jesus, “the perfecter of our faith,” and his path to the cross. The schedule appears below. February 17th, Palm Schwenkfelder Church, “The Faith of Noah” By faith, Noah built the ark, gathered the ani-mals, watched the waters rise, and received the rainbow promise. How do we have faith in things not yet seen?

February 24, St. Mark’s, Pennsburg, “The Faith of Abraham” By faith, Abraham journeyed to an unknown land, trusted in God’s promise of a son, and of-fered up that son as a sacrifice. When faith means taking a risk, how do we respond?

MARCH 2, Pennsburg United Church of Christ, “The Faith of Moses” By faith, Moses chose the hard path to follow God’s call. How does our faith affect the choices we must make?

MARCH 9, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Red Hill, “The Faith of the Israelites” By faith, generations of Israelites wandered the wilderness, entered the promised land, heard the words of the prophets, and suffered perse-cution. Amid life’s joys and difficulties, how do we persevere in our faith?

MARCH 16, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Sum-neytown, “Jesus, the Perfecter of Our Faith” Enduring the cross, Jesus becomes “the pio-neer and perfecter of our faith.” How does the way of the cross define our faith?

PLEASE NOTE: ALL MID-WEEK SERVICES WILL BEGIN AT 7 PM THIS YEAR. ALSO: ASH WEDNESDAY, MAUNDY THURS-DAY AND GOOD FRIDAY TENEBRAE SER-VICE WILL BEGIN AT 7:30 PM

ELCA WORLD HUNGER’S 40 DAYS

OF GIVING

With your help, ELCA World Hunger Appeal has worked on hunger issues for more than 40 years, and together, we have made an incredible worldwide im-

pact. However, the rate of global progress against hunger is slowing in many of the world’s poorest communities. And here in the United States, many Americans have been forced to choose between paying for food and other ba-sic necessities. We must not lose ground. There is more work to do here at home and around the world. This Lent, we have the opportunity to reverse this trend. ELCA World Hunger’s 40 Days of Giving is our time to live more- spiritually, intel-lectually and financially- as we live out God’s call to love and serve our neighbors. The goal is to raise $2 million by Easter Sunday, March 27. At our Church Council meeting on January 4th, we pledged to do our share at St. Mark’s in this church wide effort. The Adult Sunday School class is taking the opportunity to study and discuss the issues of World Hunger during the six weeks of Lent. They will gather at 9 AM on February 14, 21, 28, March 6, 13, and 20. You’re welcome to join them in the Library/Lounge. The Campaign for the ELCA is the first-ever comprehensive campaign for our church. Through the campaign, we will help our church grow our communities of faith, form new lead-ers, welcome our neighbors, overcome malaria, confront hunger and poverty, accompany our global companion churches and so much more. Look for a Lenten letter with a World Hunger envelope from Pastor Chuck in early February.

Many thanks to the St. Mark’s Sunday School for delivering a fruit basket. It made my day! Also, thanks to the member who donated the stationary

supplies during Christmas. I will certainly put them to good use. I am blessed to be a mem-ber of St. Mark’s! - Lillie Bosler

GIVING: Maybe it was in school, maybe it was with a close friend or your brother or sister. Do you remember running as fast as you could with somebody gaining on you? Your breath is coming hard, yet you keep on running. A pain starts up in your side, yet the sheer exhilaration of the race keeps you going. At the finish line, you collapse on the grass. You won! Yes, you won! What joy! Giving is like that- the strange combination of effort, a painful stretching of yourself, leading to joy. Give till you feel the joy. Run the race set before you. Make a difference! (The Rev. Roy W. Cole)
