The song is recorded in the African Methodist Episcopal Church Review in 1911 as having been sung by an opera singer awaiting trial for fraud in his cell while a group of men arrested for drunk and disorderly conduct were before the judge. The men were said to have dropped to their knees as the song began 'Last night I lay a- sleeping, There came a dream so fair.', the lyrics contrasting with their previous night's drunkenness. The song's conclusion resulted in the judge dismissing the men without punishment, each having learned a lesson from the song. Pip’s organ postlude was a powerful organ transcription of G.F. Handel’s Circumvection of the Ark of the Covenant from his orato- rio, Joshua .

We offer prayers of comfort for Spirit Ringer, Anne Sabetta, and prayers for the repose of her mother, Margaret A. “Peggy” Wagner Hines. She passed away in Owensboro, Ken-tucky, this past Sunday, aged 85. Her funeral was held today (Wed.) at Parish of the Im-maculate Catholic Church, in Owensboro.

Prelude and Postlude

This past Sunday, the Second Sunday of Easter, we heard choir bass, Bob Adelberg, sing a perennial favorite, The Holy City. An interesting account of the work states that it is a religious Victorian ballad dating from 1892, with music by Michael Maybrick writing under the alias Stephen Adams, with lyrics by Frederic Weatherly. The song is recorded in the African Methodist Episcopal Church Review in 1911 as having been sung by an opera singer awaiting trial for fraud in his cell while a group of men arrested for drunk and disorderly conduct were before the judge. The men were said to have dropped to their knees as the song began 'Last night I lay a-sleeping, There came a dream so fair.', the lyrics contrasting with their previous night's drunkenness. The song's conclusion resulted in the judge dismissing the men without punishment, each having learned a lesson from the song. Pip’s organ postlude was a powerful organ transcription of G.F. Handel’s Circumvection of the Ark of the Covenant from his orato-rio, Joshua.

O Bless the Lord This motet for double choir by Giovanni

Gabrieli will be sung on Sunday, 18 May

during the 10 a.m. Mass.

This date was chosen based on everyone’s ability

to be in choir that Sunday. We need EVERY singer for this beautiful piece of music! If a long-lost

relative or friend comes to town that weekend, do

not sign out. Bring them to church!! They will hear something very exciting and unique! The original plan was to have our Bellarmani serve

as “Choir I,” with the rest of the choir as “Choir II.”

Four voices against some 15-17 voices would be dif-

ficult to balance effectively. Note below the new “division of forces.” The Bellarmani will still serve

as Choir I, but are now augmented with a few volun-

teer singers to better balance against the rest of

the choir singing Choir II.

We’ve been rehearsing “Choir II” so far, but do

remember that Choir I and Choir II are essentially

the same, and merely “flip-flop” how they dialogue

with one another.

Be ready for some great fun!!

Notre Dame on Lexington Road??

For the final choral Sunday of the season, 29 June (Sts. Pater and Paul), we are looking at another work that will be quite unique not only to our parish, but to most American parishes. As this Mass will be in Latin—in the Ordinary Form—the anthem will be the Te Deum Laudamus (We Praise Thee, O God). The “simple mode” chant will be sung in alternatum with the organ.

The Te Deum prayer “unites heaven and earth.” The alternating style has the “earthly choir” singing every other verse, while “the heavenly hosts” sing the alternating verses, their accompa-niment being thundered out quite liter-ally on the full organ. This is a great ecclesiastical roar! Stay tuned for more information!!

Update on Bobbie Raibert

Last Wednesday afternoon Pip and Dave went to visit Bobbie Raibert in Baptist Hospital. As Pip was feeling quite under the weather, he purchased a “get well” balloon and stayed down the hall in a waiting room. Dave visited with Bobbie for a good while. She loved the balloon and the card from the choir! All things considered, Bobbie looked quite well, and was talking nearly non-stop. She had been sitting up in a chair for about 3-1/2 hours. All good signs! As of last Wednesday, she had made the decision to not do any more dialysis. That said, the kidney specialist has been very pleased with her increased kidney function, and the pulmonary specialist is quite pleased with her lung function. Bobbie mentioned that she may be moving to a rehab facility in the near future, but that has not been finalized as of publication time for this newslet-ter. She send her love and says “hello” to everyone.

Please Sign In

and Sign Out!

EVERYONE—Please be sure to sign in when you arrive in choir. Also, be sure that you sign out on the calendar if you know you’ll miss a rehearsal or Sunday Mass. BELLARMANI — It is imperative that you sign-in! The sign-in sheet also functions as your “time sheet.” Please be sure you DO sign-in so you are paid for every rehearsal and Mass that you sing.

I could not resist including the pun, below, that was posted on Sean Allen’s Face-book page. I think we all know a certain choir bass and pun-master who will likely be impressed! Dave
