JULY 8, 2012
Please respectfully turn off mobile devices while in the services. Thank you.
Not everyone considers them a part of the family, but
anyone who’s ever had a beloved pet knows that our four
legged, winged, scaled, friends truly are our family mem-
bers. And anyone who’s ever suffered the loss of a be-
loved pet has inevitably found themselves asking the ques-
tion “do animals go to heaven?” It’s this very question that
we’ll be investigating this Sunday, as we continue our
“Summer of All Request Sermons”.
The first question that needs to be asked, is not whether
animals go to heaven, or even if animals have souls, but
rather what do we mean (and what does the Bible mean)
when “heaven” is mentioned? I think for most of us, heav-
en is that place in the clouds where angels live and people
play harps! Or maybe that fantasy land where every dream
and desire comes true. But is that what the Bible means
when it’s talking about heaven?
It would seem that likely once we identify what “heaven”
really is (or at least what it could be) that our other ques-
tions will simply take care of themselves! So will Old Yell-
er be romping in the heavenly fields? You’ll have to join us
this Sunday and find out! Pastor John Martin

As alien and archaic as the idea may seem, the task of the church is not to
make men and women happy; it is to make them holy.

The Hymns We Sing
Sing With All The Saints in Glory Words: William J. Irons, 1873 Music: Ludwig Van Beethoven, 1824 HYMN TO JOY This text, inspired by by 1 Cor. 15:20, celebrates in beautiful poetic language the meaning of eternal life won for us in Christ’s resurrection. Set to the tune HYMN TO JOY from Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, this hymn is a favorite among congrega-tions.
Shall We Gather At the River Words and Music: Robert Lowry, 1864 HANSON PLACE Robert Lowry, a Baptist preacher from Philadelphia, wrote both text and tune. Based on Rev. 22: 1-5, “a pure river of the water of life proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb”. Filled with images of the kingdom of God, the final stanza assures us of the joy we shall know when our pilgrimage is over, and we reach the shining river.
I’ll Fly Away Words and Music: Albert E. Brumley, 1932 I’LL FLY AWAY A favorite gospel tune frequently sung at camp meetings, this uplifting song reminds us of the hope we have in eternal life in the kingdom of God. Amidst the trials of this world, we sing of the future promise of no more tears, sickness, and chains – but of life forever in the light of the Lord.
