SAINTS FOR OUR TIMES“It is the saints who provide the key to understanding the work of God in our time. As we imitate the saints in their imitation of Christ, we can once again expect the regenerating life of the Holy Spirit to renew and reform the Church” – Jerome K. WilliamsWhat an important reminder as we approach this Lenten season; to look towards the saints in their imitation of Christ. As we continue on our spiritual journey, what better companion than that of a saint to accompany us and help us focus on regenerating our life through the Holy Spirit. The publication, Saints for Our Times, by Jerome K. Williams is an excellent way to assist you in this spiritual connection. This book will be available after all weekend Masses on February 10-11 for a nominal donation of $2.00.What saint do you want beside you on this journey?

ASH WEDNESDAY COLLECTION – There will be a collection taken at all Ash Wednesday Masses with the entire collection being split between the Churches in Central and Eastern Europe and in Africa. Your gift will help in the effort to restore and strengthen the Church in these suffering regions through grants that promote ministries for children and families, create affordable housing and provide cultural and spiritual education. Thank you for your generosity.

THE POPE’S PRAYER INTENTIONS – February 2018That those who have material, political or spiritual power may resist any lure of corruption.

HERE I AM, LORDBROTHERS AND SISTERS,My name is Jony Murillo, I am a seminarian from the Archdiocese of Tegucigalpa. This year, I start my first year of theology at the Major Seminary of Our Lady of Suyapa. I am 22 years old and my parents have been separated since I was a baby. I have ten brothers and seven sisters.

My parish is Saint Mary Queen. It is in the city of Tegucigalpa. My Parish Priest and the Vicar serve six communities in the marginal zone of the city. Many young people and children live on the banks of the river; therefore, it is very difficult to meet all the needs of these people. The whole parish is inhabited by approximately 1,700 people. Each family has a very diverse reality. Every Sunday of every month our parish has an activity called Pound the Love to serve food to the poorest people. The first thing people in a situation of poverty look for is something to eat. We do not have a sister parish in the United States and that makes pastoral work very difficult. We help a rural parish but the situation is similar in the city.

Please pray for us; for our vocations, for all the priests of Honduras and especially for our homeland, Honduras. Pray for us to have courage and strong faith.

God Bless You.

The upcoming observances of National Marriage Week, February 7-14 and World Marriage Day, Sunday, February 11 are an opportunity to focus on building a culture of life and love that begins with supporting and promoting marriage and the family.

“Promoting and strengthening marriage remains a pastoral priority of our Conference,” wrote Archbishop Charles J. Chaput of Philadelphia, in a letter to his brother bishops. “Marriage, both as a natural institution and as a Christian sacrament, is an irreplaceable good for society and for all people.”

Archbishop Chaput encouraged participation in the Call to Prayer for Life, Marriage, and Religious Liberty, an invitation to prayer and sacrifice for the protection of life, marriage, and religious liberty in the country.

The USCCB provides numerous resources that can be of assistance in promoting, strengthening and defending the gift of marriage as the lifelong union of one man and one woman, including the websites: For Your Marriage and Marriage: Unique for a Reason.

A daily virtual marriage retreat for National Marriage Week is also available through Facebook: www.facebook.com/foryourmarriage

Please visit the display table at the back of church for further information and resources available for you.

Join the movement!Pray for Life, Marriage and Religious Liberty.

SAINT OF THE WEEK

ST. JOSEPHINE BAKHITASt. Josephine Bakhita was a Sudanese-born former slave who became a Canossian Religious Sister in Italy, living and working there for 45 years. St. Josephine was born in Sudan in 1869 but sometime between the ages of seven to nine, she was kidnapped by Arab slave traders. Over the course of six years, she experienced much cruelty at the hands of her masters. It is said that the trauma of her abduction caused her to forget her own name; she took one given to her by the slave traders, “bakhita,” Arabic for lucky. In 1883, Bakhita was bought by an Italian Consul, Callisto Legnani, who treated her in a loving and cordial manner. Political situations forced the Consul to return to Italy and Bakhita obtained permission to return with him. In Venice, Italy Bakhita encountered the Canossian Sisters, and it was there that Bakhita came to know about God. She once stated, “Seeing the sun, the moon, and the stars, I said to myself: Who could be the Master of these beautiful things? And I felt a great desire to see Him, to know Him and to pay Him homage.”Bakhita was baptized on January 9, 1890 and was given the name Josephine. She soon experienced the call to religious life and joined the Institute of St. Magdalen of Canossa. For the next 50 years, Josephine lived the life of a humble servant in her community. She engaged in cooking, sewing, embroidery, and attending to the door. As she grew older, she experienced long, painful years of sickness, which she endured graciously. St. Josephine Bakhita died on February 8, 1947 at her convent, surrounded by her fellow Sisters. Her feast day coincides with the day of her passing from this life.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWSTHE SECOND GRADE PSR – We continue to prepare for the sacrament of First Holy Communion, which is scheduled for April 29th at the noon Mass. We are learning about the Eucharist and how important it is to receive the Eucharist with reverence towards God.THE NET TEAM will be coming to Holy Angels for the eighth grade Confirmation Retreat on February 11-13. There are 13 young men and woman who will need a place to stay for two nights. Anyone interested in hosting 2-4 members, please contact Susan Anderson at 937-498-0433 or [email protected]. Hosting these young adults has been a positive experience for those parish members who have had the opportunity to host in the past.PSR – WRAPPED IN GOD’S LOVE – Recently, the Holy Angels Outreach Committee shared with the PSR classes the importance as Christians to serve others. Members led the students in discussion and prayer. First and second graders, directed by Karen Stockstill, made 60 fleece scarves which were then matched with hats that had been made by committee members. These will be

donated to Alpha Center, Compassionate Care and Sidney City Schools. The third through sixth graders, led by Jeanne Schlagetter and Bonnie Banks, made 57 fleece blankets to wrap children in God’s love at Wilson Health and Dayton Children’s hospitals. Fair Trade items were set up in the connector for the parents to view and purchase as well.

WHAT IS ?Scrip fund raising is a no-selling program that enables families to raise money for their non-profit organization. Scrip is just another way to pay for everyday purchases using gift cards in place of cash, checks and credit cards. Holy Angels has been a part of the Scrip program for many years and we want to remind you how it works so we can all benefit from the proceeds of this awesome program. You purchase gift cards from your organization at face value, the cards are purchased at a reduced price and the difference is an instant rebate for Holy Angels. The rebate Holy Angels receives is used towards religious education expenses for the school, parish and PSR programs. Families of Holy Angels and Lehman students are given half of the rebate back as a tuition kick back. So if the rebate is $2.00, Holy Angels keeps $1.00 and the other $1.00 is given as a tuition credit.Order forms are in the book rack at the back of Church. Scrip is for sale after Masses on Saturday and Sunday and in the Holy Angels school office during school hours.New to the Scrip program is Bruno’s Restaurant; Bruno’s is offering a 25% rebate to Holy Angels Parish. Please support this local restaurant and help Holy Angels raise money by using your Scrip card when visiting Bruno’s.Walmart Scrip cards can be used at the pump for 3¢ off a gallon of gasoline; this is a win-win for everyone! Please continue to watch the bulletin for updates and announcements on Scrip. If you have any questions, please contact Shelley VanSkiver at (937) 726-2510 or Emily Liening at (937) 441-2885.
