Doctors of the Church Is there a doctor in the house? Well, if that house is the Church, then the answer is “yes.” And we don’t mean medical doctors. Of all the various kinds of saints in the church— virgins, martyrs, reli-gious, whatever—the least appreciated by most people may be the Doctors of the Church. These saints are probably best thought of as doctors in the PhD sense of the word. Through their research, study, and writing, they have advanced the Church’s knowledge of our faith. To be de-clared a Doctor of the Church does not imply that all their writings are free from error but rather that the whole body of their work, taken together serves to advance the cause of Christ and his Church.
The title was first given in the Middle Ages, and originally, there were four great Doctors of the Church: St. Ambrose, 4th century bishop of Milan, St. Augustine, 5th century bishop of Hippo, St. Gregory the Great, who was pope at the start of the 7th century, and St. Jerome, the 5th century biblical scholar and translator. Over the years the church has added about 30 additional saints with the title “Doctor of the Church,” including St. Bonaventure, whose feast day is celebrated on July 15. Since 1970, four women have also been declared “Doctors of the Church”: St. Teresa of Avila; St. Catherine of Siena; St. Thérèse of Lisieux, who received the title in 1998; and St. Hildegard of Bingen, who was declared a Doctor of the Church in 2012 by Pope Benedict XVI. Most recently, in Feb-ruary 2015, Pope Francis declared Armenian poet and monk, St. Gregory of Narek, a Doctor of the Universal Church.
All these Doctors of the Church advanced the knowledge of God through their writing on theology, spirituali-ty, mysticism, or through their defense of the faith in the face of heresy and schism. *Taken from usccb.org, written by Fr. Larry Rice

RESUMPTION OF PUBLIC MASSES IN THE DIOCESE OF DODGE CITY:
We are glad to announce that the Bishop has directed the resumption of public Masses under strict guidelines, with the exemption of
the three counties of Ford, Finney, and Seward, where there are still many cases of Covid-19. This takes effect on Wed., May 27th.
Parishioners are encouraged to wear masks at all times during Mass except to receive Holy Communion.
Families are asked to please bring hand-sanitizer.

Please take instructions from ushers.
If you are feeling ill or have been taking care of very ill persons, we ask that you not attend.
Those who can attend Mass on Tuesday—Friday, are strongly encouraged to do so. This will allow those who cannot do this to
attend on the weekend.
We will continue to live-stream our weekend Masses for those unable to attend.
Remember that weekend obligations remain suspended during this time of pandemic.
The faithful are strongly encouraged to participate only in Holy Masses of their own parish.
Physical touching one another, including hand shakes, is strongly discouraged.
Offertory baskets will be left in the vestibule for parishioners to place their offerings.

A PRAYER FOR THE FAMILY (Composed by St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta)
Heavenly Father, You have given us the model of life in the Holy Family of Nazareth.
Help us, O Loving Father, to make our family another Nazareth where love, peace & joy reign.
May it be deeply contemplative, intensely Eucharistic, revived with joy.
Help us to stay together in joy and sorrow in family prayer.
Teach us to see Jesus in the members of our families, especially in their distressing disguise.
May the Eucharistic heart of Jesus make our hearts humble like his and help us to carry out our family duties
in a holy way.
May we love one another as God loves each one of us, more and more each day, and forgive each other’s
faults as you forgive our sins. Help us, O Loving Father, to take whatever you give and give whatever you
take with a big smile.
Immaculate Heart of Mary, cause of our joy, pray for
us.
St. Joseph, pray for us.
Holy Guardian Angels, be always with us, guide and
protect us. Amen!

PRAYER FOR RELIGIOUS LIBERTY: O God, our creator, from Your provident hand we have received our
right to life, liberty & the pursuit of happiness. You have called us as Your people & given us the right & the duty to
worship You, the only true God, and Your Son, Jesus Christ. Through the power & working of Your Holy Spirit, You
call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world, bringing the light & the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner
of society. We ask You to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty. Give us the strength of mind &
heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened; give us courage in making our voices heard on behalf of
the rights of Your Church & the freedom of conscience of all people of faith. Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father, a
clear and united voice to all your sons & daughters gathered in Your Church in this decisive hour in the history of our
nation, so that, with every trial withstood & every danger overcome—for the sake of our children, our grandchildren &
all who come after us—this great land will always be “one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for
all.” We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen!

In this time of confusion and uncertainty over the ongoing spread of the Corona Virus (Covid-19) I would ask that you please continue to pray for all effected by this disease, whether suffering from the virus itself or the loss of in-come due to the temporary closing of businesses. With churches closed, their revenue has dried up. Online giving is likely now the only way to support the pastoral and sacramental work of our parish. If you have the ability to support your par-ish / church today, please consider doing so. This crisis is hurting all of us, but we can make things better by sticking to-gether and supporting our parish / church that supports us all. Thanks for your consideration. - Mark Roth, Diocese of Dodge City
