How far do you agree?In 1625, Charles I succeeded his father James to become King of England. Charles was a divisive figure, and, during the 4 years prior to his personal rule, he had a poor relationship with his Parliament. One of the main reasons for this was the situation regarding religion, which was a very large and present bone of contention between the Sovereign and his Parliament. However, despite the importance of the religious situation in England at the time, ultimately it was the actions of the Duke of Buckingham which caused the most conflict between Parliament and Charles, and not the issue of religion.The religious struggle between Charles and Parliament is exemplified in the conflict surrounding, as well as the results following, the York House Conference. Held in the private residence of the Duke of Buckingham, the intention was for the Puritans to assure themselves and the rest of England that the King was on their side.
