–Quindici anni di storia e un tema forte che intende abbinare la linea di riflessione sul religioso specifica del Festival con una forte dimensione sociale attenta alle istanze poste dall’attualità, nel solco del dibattito aperto dalle ultime edizioni dedicate alle migrazioni e alla povertà. Con il titolo Conflitti. Religioni e (non)violenza, Religion Today, muovendo dalla storia specifica della nonviolenza, nell’incontro tra le religioni orientali e occiden-tali, invita ad approfondire il ruolo delle religioni in un mondo abitato dalla violenza – ruolo quanto mai complesso e delicato – a partire dalla denun-cia di ogni tentazione fondamentalista di intransigenza e di chiusura, in contrap-posizione con valori fondamentali quali il rispetto, l’impegno reciproco, la dispo-nibilità al dialogo. La discussione intorno al tema dell’anno, infine, si propone di evidenziare il legame essenziale tra pace, giustizia, promozione dei diritti umani.

full of violence - a role which has never been so complex and deli-cate, - starting from the condemnation of every fundamentalist tempta-tion of obstinacy and narrow-mindedness, as opposed to such essential values as respect, mutual commitment, willingness to engage in dialogue. Finally, the discussion on the theme of the year seeks to highlight how peace, justice and the promotion of human rights are inextricably bound together.

taglia un traguardo importante il religion today filmfestival, con una quindicesi-ma edizione che va dritta al cuore delle cose. si parla, questa volta, di conflitti, di religioni e di violenza, con quel prefisso, il “non”, messo opportunamente tra paren-tesi, a suggerire che la via della pace, del dialogo, della ricomposizione pacifica delle controversie, della resistenza disarmata anche ai soprusi e agli abusi è una opzione possibile, sì, ma mai scontata. Non lo è neanche per chi professa una fede, qualsivoglia fede. Perché la tentazione dell’uso della forza, fosse anche con il pretesto, o peggio la convinzione, di far prevalere la Verità, è sempre dietro l’ango-lo, è la benzina che incendia i fuochi del fondamentalismo. con essa dobbiamo fare i conti, quale che sia il nostro atteggiamen-to nei confronti delle religioni. così come dobbiamo continuare, instancabilmente, a farci testimoni e promotori dei valori del rispetto, della solidarietà, dell’accoglienza, della disponibilità al dialogo. religion today lo fa con il linguaggio del cinema, la settima arte, quella che, come spiegava uno dei suoi grandi maestri, akira Kurosawa, ne contiene molte altre, dalla letteratura alla pittura, dal teatro alla musica. Un’arte che anche in trentino sta ricavandosi spazi importanti, per la presenza sempre più frequente di registi e attori che qui trovano l’ambiente ideale ove realizzare le loro produzioni, e per il lavoro di promozione, anche delle risorse locali, realizzato dalla film commission. I festival cinematografici che si svolgono in trentino possono trarre anche da ciò nuove fonti di ispirazione e nuovi motivi per accrescere le sinergie con il territorio e i vari attori che in esso si muovono, come le scuole e il mondo delle associazioni.a maggior ragione religion today, visto l’impatto delle sue proposte. questa edizione può contare sulla colla-borazione di soggetti “bene informati sui fatti”, come il forum trentino per la pace e i diritti umani, la fondazione fontana, la fondazione langer, la fbk. sempre sul versante collaborazioni, spiccano fra le altre quelle con l’arcidiocesi di trento ma anche con la comunità evangelica di Me-rano e con numerose realtà dell’arcipelago culturale del nostro territorio. e poi, come sempre, il filmfestival delle religioni conferma la sua vocazione a varcare i confini, perché il dialogo, in tutte le sue accezioni, nasce pur sempre da un “moto a luogo”, nasce dalla capacità di uscire dal proprio recinto, di andare verso gli altri, e di andarci con le mani aperte, in segno di pace. Quindi roma, Nomadelfia, bassano, teggiano, bolzano e partners come l’Università Pontificia salesiana e la tony blair faith foundation.al religion today filmfestival, dunque, l’augurio di proseguire il proprio cammino, aiutandoci a capire, ad ogni edizione, qualcosa di più sul mondo complesso, difficile, affascinante, in cui viviamo. con l’aiuto delle religioni, del messaggio uni-versale che ognuna di esse reca con sé; e con il linguaggio moderno, ma ormai già “classico”, del cinema.

Now in its fifteenth edition, the religion today film festival has reached an impor-tant objective and one which goes straight to the heart of the matter. this time it will deal with conflicts, religions and violence, with the prefix “non” opportunely placed between brackets, suggesting that the way of peace, of dialogue, of the peaceful settling of arguments, of unarmed resis-tance even to misuse and abuse of power is a possible choice, but never predictable. Nor is it so for those who profess a faith, any faith because the temptation to use force even with an excuse, or worse still with conviction, to let the truth prevail, is always behind every corner. It is the petrol which ignites the fire of fundamentalism. We have to deal with it, whatever our attitude to religions is. similarly we have to tirelessly strive to bear witness to and promote the values of respect, of solidarity, of welcoming others and of openness to dialogue. religion today does this through the language of cinema, the seventh art, that which according to one of its great masters akira Kurosawa, contains many other arts, from literature to painting, from theatre to music. an art form which even here in trentino is forging a way for itself, as the sheer number of directors and actors who find the area an ideal setting for making their productions, and for the promotional work, even of local resources, carried out by the film commission. the film festivals which take place in trentino can also find new sources of inspiration and new reasons to increase their synergy with the region and the various players who move therein, such as schools and the world of social networks. all credit to religion today then given the impact of what it has to offer. It is not by chance that this edition can count on the collaboration of organizations who are “well informed of

the facts”, such as the trentino forum for Peace and Human rights, the fondazi-one fontana, the fondazione langer, the fondazione bruno Kessler. Not forgetting the collaboration with the archdiocese of trento and also that of the evangelical community of Merano and the many differ-ent cultural groups present in our region. and so, as always, the film festival of religions reaffirms its vocation by breaking down barriers, since dialogue, with all its connotations, is born out of a “move-ment towards a place”, it comes from the ability to leave your own comfort zone and approach others with open arms in a sign of peace. so the festival will go on to rome, Nomadelfia, bassano, teggiano, bolzano and partners such as the Univer-sità Pontificia salesiana and the tony blair faith foundation.at every edition of the religion today film festival there is the desire to continue its journey helping others to understand something about the complex, difficult and fascinating world in which we live. religion today can help share the universal mes-sage which every individual carries with them through the modern but already “classic” language of cinema.

Qualunque religione – intesa non esclusivamente come insegnamento e credenza, ma come dinamismo spirituale che permea l’esistenza e ne interpreta il significato – può essere tanto un fattore di pace quanto l’occasione per il ravvivarsi di conflitti. Può aprire a una maggior comprensione o portare al disprezzo dell’altro. È un fatto, questo, che non manca di sconcertare, ma che la storia attesta in maniera sufficientemente dolorosa perché non si possa negarlo. Naturalmente si può, senza dubbio con buone ragioni, affrettarsi a porre dei distinguo. a precisare che non le religioni, ma la loro degenerazione ideologica, il loro uso politico e strumentale, produco-no violenza, quando invece ogni fede, in ciò che ha di più genuino, è una grande risorsa per la pace. se si prende sul serio la precisazione, tuttavia, ci si accorge che essa non tempera affatto lo sconcerto iniziale, anzi se possibile lo acuisce. come spiegare che la tentazione di separare la verità dalla pietà si annidi con tale disar-mante facilità nell’alveo delle esperienze religiose più diverse? com’è possibile, dal momento che il cedere a tale tentazione appare una violenza fatta al sentimento proprio della religiosità, prima ancora di erompere in intolleranza e sopruso nei confronti degli altri?Non sarà certo il cinema a fornire risposte adeguate a un tale dilemma, ma, come i quindici anni di storia del religion today filmfestival attestano, esso può aiutarci a cogliere l’ampiezza e l’urgenza della domanda stessa, la sua inerenza al vivere di tante donne e uomini del nostro tempo. di qui la scelta di un tema dell’anno per certi versi scomodo, eppure dovuto, per rifuggire da una celebrazione troppo facile, dunque sterile, del “dialogo” tra le religioni. Incontrare l’altro significa

inevitabilmente rischiare di ferirlo e accet-tare di lasciarsi ferire dalla sua diversità. “conflitti. religioni e (non)violenza” è così anche un modo per radicalizzare la questione del dialogo, tanto centrale nell’esperienza di religion today. da tre lustri il filmfestival è impegnato a promuovere il cinema quale strumento di incontro e conoscenza, nell’ottica di una cultura della pace. riconoscere che la violenza non è un mero inciampo in cui ci imbattiamo lungo il cammino ma è talvolta già nel modo in cui muoviamo i nostri passi, per quanto prudenti e benin-tenzionati, significa disporsi a cogliere la complessità del fenomeno religioso nella sua presenza storica concreta, in cui si intrecciano l’insopprimibile speranza della pace, gli sforzi generosi e reiterati per so-stenerla, ma anche scoraggianti chiusure e inopinate esplosioni di violenza. con 57 film ammessi all’edizione 2012, fiction, cortometraggi e documentari pro-venienti dai cinque continenti, l’ambizione della rassegna non è evidentemente quel-la di una completezza ostica perfino per le indagini più analitiche e raffinate, ma di offrire uno spaccato sufficientemente rappresentativo della molteplicità e della fluidità del fenomeno religioso, in modo tale che anche la fruizione di un film possa diventare una sorta di “allenamen-to” alla diversità, a un “rispetto” per l’altro che non si limiti a mantenere le distanze di sicurezza, ma si nutra del desiderio di infrangerle. a costo di lasciarsi ferire.

Any religion – not exclusively those intended as a way of teaching and a creed, but as a spiritual dynamism which permeates our existence and interprets the meaning thereof – can be as much the cause of peace as an opportunity to rekindle conflicts. Religion can bring about a better understanding of others or increase our contempt for them. This is a disturbing fact, but one which has been borne out by history in such a painful way that it cannot be ignored. Of course, it goes without saying that one can try to be more specific, underlining that it is not religions themselves, but their ideological degeneration, their political and instrumental use which produces violence when indeed every faith, in that which is most genuine, is a great resource for peace. If we take this specification seriously, however, we realize that it does not at all lessen the initial bewilderment, rather it heightens it. How do we explain that the temptation to separate the truth from piety nestles with such disarm-ing ease at the roots of the most varied religious experiences? How is it possible, from the moment in which giving in to such temptation seems like an act of violence against the real sense of religious feeling, even before it erupts into intoler-ance and abuse of power towards others?It will most certainly not be cinema which will provide the answers to such a dilem-ma, but as Religion Today’s fifteen-year history attests, it can help us understand the enormity and urgency of the question itself, its connection to the lives of many men and women of our times. Thus this year’s chosen theme may seem a tricky one, but necessary at the same time in order to escape from an all too easy, even sterile, celebration of “dialogue” between religions. Meeting ‘the other’ means

risking the possibility of hurting him and accepting the fact that you might be hurt by how he differs from you. “Conflicts. Religions and (non)violence” is also a way of radicalizing the question of dialogue, which is central to the experience of Religion Today. For fifteen years the Film Festival has been committed to promoting cinema as a means of getting to know other religions, in a vision of a culture of peace. Recognizing that violence is not merely an obstacle that makes us trip up along our journey but it is already present in the world in which we take our steps, however cautious and well-intentioned they may be; it means being willing to see the complexity of the phenomenon of religion in its concrete historical presence, in which the insuppressible hope for peace, the unstinting and reiterated efforts for sustaining it, and also the discouraging closures and unexpected explosions of violence are woven together. With 57 films admitted to the 2012 edition, feature films, shorts and documentaries from five continents, the aim of the festival is evidently not that of completeness, but that of offering a sufficiently representative cross section of religious phenomena in terms of its multiplicity and fluidity, so that the use of a film can become a sort of “training” in diversity, showing “respect” for ‘the other’ which does not limit itself to maintaining a safe distance, but which instead is fed by the desire to invade that comfort zone. Un’edizione più che mai plurale: nella varietà dei film, capaci di interpretare il tema dell’anno in modi tanto aderenti quanto originali e imprevisti, come anche nella maglia sempre più fitta delle partecipazioni locali e internazionali. da sempre il festival ha dentro di sé l'idea del mettersi e pensarsi in viaggio, per accogliere la ricchezza di stimoli e apporti provenienti dalle varie sedi. anche quest’anno religion today prosegue dunque la sua espansione sul territorio trentino e nazionale, con il coinvolgimento attivo di pubblici diversi. sul lato della proposta, inoltre, il festival chiama a raccolta le forze vive della cultura, dell’associazionismo e della ricerca, mettendo a confronto filmakers e studiosi, musicisti e artisti visivi, teologi e attivisti, religiosi e laici; il risultato è un programma mai così ricco di approfondimenti multidisciplinari sui temi del cinema religioso riletti in parallelo con i forti stimoli dell’attualità. Il rapporto fondamentale con la città di treNto, dove il festival è nato e cresciuto negli anni, in stretta relazione con la storica vocazione della città a farsi ponte tra fedi e culture, si esprime in ben dieci giornate di proiezioni e eventi scalati dall’11 al 20 ottobre, introdotti da una

mostra bibliografica presso la biblioteca comunale (1-6 ottobre). Nel capoluogo saranno proiettati tutti i film selezionati e si riunirà la Giuria internazionale; sarà inoltre rinnovata l’esperienza del laboratorio di convivenza tra operatori di diverse fedi e nazionalità. Per una partecipazione viva della città e del territorio provinciale il festival farà ricorso allo strumento delle giurie speciali; sono previsti inoltre specifici appuntamenti, per il pubblico e per le scuole, in diverse località del trentino.dopo l’evento inaugurale di giovedì 11 ottobre, con la musicazione dal vivo del film “east and West” a cura della ziganoff Jazzmer band di renato Morelli, la prima giornata del concorso, venerdì 12, propone un doppio momento di riflessione sul tema dell’anno. Nel pomeriggio, in collaborazione con il forum trentino per la Pace ed i diritti umani, l’attenzione si concentrerà sui temi del conflitto e delle esperienze nonviolente in terrasanta. l’incontro serale, organizzato di concerto con fondazione fontana-Unimondo, coinvolgerà l’arcivescovo di trento, Monsignor luigi bressan, esperto di relazioni internazionali già delegato presso le Nazioni Unite ed il consiglio d'europa, in dialogo con il Prof. Ugo Morelli, presidente di Polemos, scuola di formazione e studi sui conflitti.Il tema dell’anno nella giornata di sabato 13 ottobre sarà affrontato anche da brunetto salvarani, teologo e saggista cattolico, e adnane Mokrani, teologo musulmano, entrambi impegnati nel dialogo interreligioso in Italia e nel mondo; questo incontro troverà spazio presso il Museo diocesano tridentino, in concomitanza con la mostra su “l’immagine dell’altro. tra stereotipi e pregiudizi. spunti di riflessione”.Nella giornata di domenica 14 ottobre,

l’appuntamento "In marcia. Pacifismo e (non)violenza nei balcani", in collaborazione con la fondazione alexander langer di bolzano, vedrà la partecipazione di figure di riferimento del movimento nonviolento italiano; l’incontro sarà l'occasione per ricordare la marcia pacifista del 1992 e la figura di don tonino bello, da sempre ispirazione per il filmfestival. si rinnova il rapporto con la cooperativa Kaleidoscopio per tre pomeriggi che prevedono tra l’altro un approfondimento sul canto popolare liturgico dell’arco alpino con la proiezione, commentata dall’autore, del documentario etnomusicologico “Voci alte – tre giorni a Premana” di renato Morelli. la città di trento ospiterà anche una collaborazione con la fondazione bruno Kessler per l’organizzazione di un seminario di studi volto a indagare il rapporto tra cristianesimo e violenza attraverso la storia del cinema (17-19 ottobre). In parallelo proseguirà il percorso di proposta e riflessione sul ruolo delle religioni nelle relazioni internazionali nato dalla collaborazione fra Provincia autonoma di trento, Ministero affari esteri e Istituto per gli studi di Politica Internazionale, che prevede un'interazione con il cinema nell’ambito del religion today filmfestival. l’evento, giunto alla sua quarta edizione, sarà quest’anno dedicato al tema “Muslim democracy as christian democracy? comparative explorations and cross-cultural dialogue” (18-19 ottobre).Il programma trentino sarà anche laboratorio di contaminazioni tra cinema e spettacolo dal vivo. torna infatti la collaborazione con il coro Giovanile della scuola di Musica “I Minipolifonici” di trento, che interpreterà alcune celebri colonne sonore sul tema della pace. la creatività giovanile sarà protagonista

anche attraverso il progetto interculturale di teatro ragazzi a cura della compagnia bakimbaum. religion today ospiterà inoltre il debutto di “God bless america", un jazz teatrale a cura di andrea brunello ed enrico Merlin per la compagnia arditodesìo: religione, società, politica nei più celebri discorsi pubblici americani da Wilson a obama, passando per Martin luther King.In ambito regionale si intensificano in particolare le relazioni con MeraNo, attraverso due giorni di eventi che vedono la collaborazione della chiesa evangelica luterana, della fondazione UPad, di Mairania 857 e della Università popolare Urania Meran. Proseguirà inoltre la collaborazione con la biblioteca civica di bolzaNo all’incrocio tra cinema, letteratura, confronto sull’attualità.accanto agli eventi nelle sedi consolidate di NoMadelfIa, teGGIaNo e bassaNo, a roMa, il 22 ottobre, torna il prestigioso appuntamento del seminario Internazionale presso la facoltà di scienze della comunicazione sociale della Università Pontificia salesiana. In coda al festival, nelle giornate del 25-26 ottobre, anche religion today parteciperà infine alla conferenza Internazionale “Il senso dell'amicizia nelle culture e nelle religioni” (roma Protomoteca/campidoglio), organizzata con il coordinamento della sezione Italiana di religions for Peace.come sempre il cammino di religion today si definisce attraverso il rapporto con altri festival e soggetti culturali, in Italia e nel mondo, che condividono una medesima cultura del dialogo e della pace; prosegue in particolare la collaborazione con la tony blair faith foundation, con i corti del concorso “faith shorts” nell’ambito del programma scuole di religion today.

AROuND AND AbOuT With religion todayan edition which is even more wide-rang-ing than ever: in the sheer variety of films capturing the theme of the year in ways which are as much relevant as they are original and surprising, likewise the same can be said of the scale of local and inter-national involvement. at the heart of the festival there has always been the idea of imagining setting off on a journey, welcom-ing the richness of stimuli and contribu-tions from the different host cities. this year religion today is continuing its expan-sion into the local trentino region and nationwide, with the active involvement of different audiences. alongside the films, the festival pools together the energetic strength of culture, of associations and of research, enabling filmmakers, musicians and visual artists, theologians and activists, religious and lay people to share experi-ences; the result is a programme which has never been so rich in multidisciplinary investigation into the themes of religious cinema, re-interpreted in the light of the strong stimulus of current affairs. the fundamental relationship with the town of treNto, where the festival was born and where it has continued to grow over the years, is borne out by 10 days of screen-ings and events from 11 to 20 october,

introduced by a bibliographic exhibition in the Public library (1-6 october). trento will play host to screenings of all the films selected and will also host the International Jury. furthermore, the experience of the living workshop will be repeated in which people working in film of different faiths and nationalities will live and work together. In order to better involve the people of the city and the surrounding area, special juries will be set up. specific appointments for the public at large and schools are foreseen in different places around the trentino region. after the festival opening on thursday 11 october, when the film “east and West” will be set to music by the renato Morelli’s ziganoff Jazzmer band, the first day of competition, friday 12, offers a double moment of reflection on the theme of the year. In the afternoon the attention will be on the themes of conflict and the nonviolence movement in the Holy land, in collaboration with the trentino forum for Peace and Human rights. the evening appointment, organized together with the fondazione fontana-Unimondo, will see the participation of the archbishop of trento, Monsignor luigi bressan, an expert in international relations and former delegate at the United Nations and council of europe, in dialogue with Prof. Ugo Morelli, president of Polemos, training school for the study of conflict. the theme of the year will be tackled on saturday 13 october by brunetto salvarani, a catholic theologian and essayist, and adnane Mokrani, a Muslim theologian commit-ted to interreligious dialogue in Italy and around the world. this meeting will take place at the Museo diocesano tridentino, where the exhibition on “the image of the other. from stereotypes to Prejudices” is housed. during the day of sunday 14 october there will be the appointment “on

the march. Pacifism and (non)violence in the balkans”, in collaboration with the fondazione alexander langer of bolzano, with the participation of important figures in the Italian nonviolence movement. the evening will also be an occasion for remembering the 1992 pacifist march and the figure of don tonino bello who has always been an inspiration to the film fes-tival. the partnership with the cooperative Kaleidoscopio will be renewed for three af-ternoons which will include, amongst other events, a study on popular liturgical songs of the alpine area with a screening of the ethnomusicological documentary “Voci alte – tre giorni a Premana” commented on by the director renato Morelli. the city of trento will also be the setting for collabo-ration with the fondazione bruno Kessler on the organization of a study seminar aimed at investigating the specific relation-ships between christianity and violence re-examined through the history of cinema (17-19 october). at the same time the course of suggestion and reflection on the role of religions in international relations which began with collaboration between the autonomous Province of trento, the Italian foreign office and IsPI – Institute for the International Political studies, which foresees interaction with cinema within the religion today film festival. the event, now in its fourth edition, will this year be dedicated to the theme “Muslim democ-racy as christian democracy? comparative explorations and cross-cultural dialogue” (18-19 october). the trentino programme will also be a combination of cinema and live performance. the collaboration with the children’s choir of the trento Music school “I Minipolifonici” will continue, with the performance of several celebrated songs on the theme of peace. the creativ-ity of young people will take centre stage
