*RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THIS TOPIC AND THE CULTURE OF MACAU

*One of the many similarities between the two locations’ religion is that there are so many kinds. But there are different ways to express them all because of Culture * AS you all know, Religion is the belief in a God and in the

meaning of life. Culture is a set of customs and cultural habits shared by many people. It is true that sometimes religion can be part of the culture of a country, but that doesn't mean that these two things are the same. *This particular topic’s relation with culture is that history formed

religion. To compare with HKSAR, there are a few different characteristics because of the changes of history (the Basic Law)

*Since HK once belonged to China, the citizens also followed the Triple Religion like their ancestors and their sister city

*Also, Since Macau is near HK, Reverend Robert Morrison also came to HK to send his message from god Lord to the people of the Chinese: “To lead them to the way of the God’s life, follow the mighty Shepard and let him lead your life.”

Confucianism*Many people who live in Macau are Chinese. The culture of

Macau is influenced by Chinese Confucianism and morality.

* In 1909, the Macau Confucianism organization was started. The purpose of the Macau Confucianism Organization is to "respect Confucianism, spread the holy virtue, educate the talented, promote the culture". They started a school to teach them this motto and its meanings with different Confucian books, such as “Mencius”

Page 16: RELIGION: The Differences and history of Religion in HKSAR And Macau

*A dialogue from

the interviews

*“They do not respect the religion like in the old days.” One old interviewee said,” They do not respect the gods like their ancestors; they just say the oath of the gods and go along without respecting them.” He also said that in the present day, if god was on land, he will personally banish them himself.

An interview with an anti-Taoism

*1. I am a carefree person, I do not care about this religion and I certainly do not want to know about its history in Macau or in HKSAR.

*2.Even if my school is a Taoism School, I do not want to know or learn about it, they are quite boring and they only talk about Confucius, which only involves history, which is only spoken in China History.

*3. Since the Law didn’t forbid us to not choose a religion, so I would go this way as well without any regret or remorse to think or to do. But I still hate this religion because even though I study in a Taoism school in HK, I do not like the culture and its traditions

*4. No, because if it is Taoism or Buddhism, they have to ring a lot of annoying bells or speak a lot of unknown and loud languages; even though that Christian is much better, they still cause a lot of chaos on the streets with their loudspeakers.

* The similarities and differences of religion between MACAU and HKSAR

Similarities :*All religion came from China, Portugal and America*The laws for religious events and choice of religion are on the

same principle- the Diocese of Macau and the treaty of the Special Administrative Region*There are many religious- themed or related activities,

arguments and treaties in these two locations.*The two regions’ governments both respected religion with

great passion

Page 19: RELIGION: The Differences and history of Religion in HKSAR And Macau

Differences*Since Macau is the first city that started religion such as

Protestantism Christian and Roman Catholic, so there are more different churches and cemeteries in Macau than Hong Kong that stored information of the history of religion.

 * The graves of the most famous people in religious history are most

buried in Macau because according to history, Macau is also the “City of God”, which has a long line of the word religion behind it, in which that Hong Kong has no history of religion apart from Buddhism
