No church in the UK receives direct funding from the Government. In England, since the rejection by Henry VIII of the supremacy of the Pope in 1534, the Anglican Church of England has been legally recognized as the official, or established, Church.

The current Monarch

The Monarch is the Supreme Governor of the Church of England and always and must always be a member of the Church, and promise to uphold it. In spite of the Monarch representation at the General Assembly through the office of the Lord High Commissioner, he/she holds no constitutional role in its government.HISTORY OF RELIGION IN ENGLAND.

Britain used to be a Roman Catholic country .In 1533, during the reign of Henry 8 , England broke from the Roman Catholic Church to form the Anglican Church . King Henry 8 wanted a divorce. He wanted a son and his wife only gave birth to daughters .He asked the Pope for permission to divorce ,but was refused .Henry 8 became very angry and decided to make his own church .

Henry 8 became leader of the Church of England [Anglican Church] .He had the Bible translated to English and the people who believed in this new religion were called Protestants .

BACK TO BEING CATHOLIC COUNTRYIn 1553 , Mary became Queen .She changed the country back to Catholicism and burned Protestants who would not at the stake.

ALL CHANGE AGAINIn 1558, Elizabeth became Queen .She changed the church back to Anglican and it has been the official religion of England since.

Protestant Churches usually have simpler ceremonies than Roman Catholic Churches. Most Christians in the US and Britain are Protestants , and the Church of England and Church of Scotland are Protestant Churches .

Protestant church

The reformation is the 16th century European movement ,led by Martin Luther and others ,to reform the Roman Catholic Church. Supporters of the Reformation opposed the political powers of the Pope and argued for a simpler religion with less ceremony and more emphasis on the authority of the Bible. In England , King Henry 8 appointed himself head of a new Protestant Church of England in 1534 ,mainly so that he could get divorced from his first wife and marry again .The new Church was supported by bishops such as Thomas Cranmer and Hugh Latimer ,and became firmly established under Queen Elizabeth 1.
