Firstly I would like to welcome our students back to school and a warm welcome to our new Year 7 students. They have had a great start to the school year. There have been many changes over the holidays. I would like to welcome our new staff or new positions for 2016:- Grant Harris – Acting Deputy Principal Megan Finnimore – Head Teacher Science Derek Smith – Acting Head Teacher of Teaching and Learning Joe Powell – Acting Head Teacher Mathematics/TAS/PDHPE Brin Hussell – English/History Kay Clark – History/French Tammy Lawler – LAST/PDHPE Michael Byrnes – relieving casual teacher Welcome back to Joanne Beattie - Music - who returns from maternity leave. There have been some physical changes to the school. I hope you have noticed the MPC makeover?? Gone are our pink doors. The library has had an internal makeover and looks absolutely fabulous. It also has a new technology area with 24 computers. Please read Mrs Clifton’s report later in this edition. Lastly, and most excitedly, is our Trade Training Centre for Metals. It is a state-of-the-art facility and, whilst in the past the results that came out of our old room were amazing, I am so excited to see what the students will now produce with the new equipment. It’s great to see the students taking advantage of the bike rack that the P&C generously donated last year. It’s in a great shady spot and easily monitored from the administration block. Issue 1 Date: 3 February 2016 Next P&C Meeting: Tuesday 16 February 2016 – 7.00pm Science Centre Conference Room (Note change of date) Page 1 of 7

The last major change to the school has been the overturning of the compressed curriculum in stage 6. This has occurred for various reasons and I can’t thank the executive staff enough for the many hours in the holidays they worked to make sure there was a smooth start to the year. The change does not affect year 12. Year 11 students have adapted quickly and positively to learning under a traditional delivery. I would like to remind families that if any circumstances have changed over the holidays to give the lovely staff a ring in the office and they will change these details. I need to stress especially if there have been medical changes, it is very important for us to know. For new families the procedure in contacting the school is to ring the front office and they will make appointments for you to speak to or see staff. It is important that information travels through the front office so it can be directed to the right staff member or is recorded in the correct place for staff to access. There is an answering machine at the school for after hours contact. The staff are very excited and pleased with the positive commencement to the year and are looking forward to working with all in our school community. I would also like to take the opportunity to thank the partnerships with businesses in town in assisting us with providing the best education possible for our students. Enjoy week 2 and I look forward to seeing you at the next P&C meeting which will be held on Tuesday 16 February at 7pm. Please note the change of date. There will be lots of news on the school’s 2016 journey discussed at that meeting. F Jackson Relieving Principal

Mrs Tammy Lawler – Learning and Support Our new bike rack is proving very popular Teacher/PDHPE SCIENCE FACULTY REPORT It is great to be appointed as Head Teacher Science at Tumbarumba High School. I haven’t come far as I have been previously teaching at Batlow Technology School. I am looking forward to working with the faculty: Mrs Carol Coleman, Mr Paul Simmons, Mr Marc Cornell and Mr Patrick Wignell. This year we have four senior subjects running in the senior school. They are Agriculture, Biology, Chemistry and Senior Science. We have three Junior Science Stage 4 and Stage 5 classes and one Stage 5 Agriculture elective. Mrs Coleman is preparing her cattle show team to showcase the Red Poll cattle at the Tumbarumba and Jingellic shows in March. Good luck to the show team. We have many new additions at the ag block with new lambs, chickens and expecting the arrival of a calf in February. Another heifer is currently off visiting the bull. It is great to see so many keen students turn up to school early to give up their time to help Mrs Coleman with the animals at the ag block. They obviously have a passion for this. Keep up the great work. If you have questions regarding Science/Agriculture/Multi Cat in the school please don’t hesitate to contact me at the school. Megan Finnimore Head Teacher Science LIBRARY REPORT We have bid farewell to Grace MacEachern who retired at the end of 3rd term. She contributed so much to the school library and we appreciate her hard work over many years. We have a new resource management system (Oliver). You can access Oliver from home or at school to: search for resources (books and other items in the library as well as websites) renew borrowed items access useful study links.

More computers Over the holidays much of the library timber work has been painted and an area set up as a computer room. Joel Pratt, Ilimo Tuvelu, Jaymeii Metcalf-Salter (from the Year 9/10 IST class) helped DOE staff with the set up and learned some valuable networking skills. To make room for the extra computers (we now have a class area of 24 computers) the non-fiction books have been temporarily stored in boxes whilst new shelves are being built. We appreciate your understanding as we take a little longer to find the non-fiction resources you request. New books and new displays Over the holidays Mr Blenkins and Mrs Clifton bought some new books for the library. We have a great selection of fiction, graphic novels and easy reads. There is a book to suit everyone. Current displays focus on fantasy books and speed reads.

MATHS, PD/H/PE AND TAS NEWS Our Faculty has begun the 2016 academic year vigorously. While Mr Harris is relieving Deputy Principal for the term, I will be filling in as relieving Head Teacher. We would like to welcome Mr Byrnes who is temporarily relieving in the Mathematics position vacated by Mrs Sowter. Mr Byrnes will be filling the role until a permanent appointment is found. The changes to our senior curriculum study patterns have meant the Maths staff are now teaching both Year 11 and 12 vertically, providing our senior students with challenging and stimulating work.

Mrs Burns is offering the same challenges to both her Year 11 and Year 12 Textiles students and has fitted into the school seamlessly since her appointment in Week 6, of Term 4 2015. Miss Sturgess, who was here last year on a city/country exchange program, will continue in her role as PD/H/PE teacher for another year. Term1 is a busy time for Miss Sturgess with the swimming and athletics carnivals running during this period. I look forward to seeing her excellent organisational skills coming to the fore again as last year’s carnivals were well received by all those involved. On another positive and personal note, I am thrilled with the new Trade Skills Centre (TSC) which will hopefully be officially opened in the coming weeks. After six months of intensive building works, the TSC is virtually complete and it will provide a state of the art facility for our students and community. It will provide industry specific resources that will expose students to the types of facilities they would use in metal related industries and trades. Our Year 11 cohort will be the first senior students to use the new TSC now that the Metal and Engineering course is being offered, thanks to the changes in our senior curriculum study pattern. I would like to thank the school community for their support whilst construction was underway. I am sure the inconvenience will be well worth it. Joe Powell Relieving Head Teacher
