Relief Printmaking Quiz Name: _____________________________ 1. Please define the following printmaking terms:
1. Brayer: Also called a roller. The tool that puts ink onto the woodblock.
2. Woodblock: The piece of wood you are carving on. Your image surface.
3. Printmaking: Medium of artwork where multiple copies can be made.
4. Token: Tool in relief printing which the person presses against the printing paper when printing their woodblock.
5. Relief printmaking: Form of printmaking where the composition being printed has been carved away or added to, and then inked and printed to create an image. 2. Please describe the printmaking process for a one-‐color relief print (may be bullets or numbered steps).
1. Cut woodblock to appropriate size. 2. Paint woodblock on side to be carved with black tempera paint. 3. Carve image with carving tools. 4. Cut down paper to needed size (optional answer). 5. Ink brayer and roll onto woodblock. 6. Lay paper on top of inked woodblock. 7. Press token all over the back of the paper to adhere ink to the paper. 8. Pull paper off woodblock. 9. Put print on drying rack.
3. Write down two noteworthy printmaking advancements (can be an artist, a developed process/ technique, etc.) from the power point given in class. May include, but not limited to: -‐lithography, intaglio/etching, woodcut to linoleum, facts/advancements -‐hand-‐printing to printing press, newspaper and type printing, using transfer sheets, screen printing, -‐began in China, Egypt -‐Pablo Picasso, Albert Durer, Felix Vallotton, etc.
