In the spring o 2007 I watched the show Best

Places to Find Cash and Treasures and they

eatured a show on metal detecting the treasure

coast o Florida. My obsession with detecting had

begun! I immediately started researching about

metal detecting, purchased my ACE 250, and joined

several orums so that I could drool over all the coolnds.

One o the orums I belonged too was small and

people seemed to become riendly pretty quickly. Talk

turned to the planning o a orum member hunt or

the all o 2008. Anne was a very active member o

that orum rom the UK who expressed an interest in

attending the hunt but said she would not have the

unds to make the trip. Since it was being held withinan hours drive rom my house I oered Anne and her

mate a place to stay i they could manage to y over

here rom the UK. And so a great riendship was born.

My husband and I had planned to visit with Anne

in 2009 to do some classic UK detecting and sight

seeing but he passed away in the spring o that year

so my plans were put on hold. This year I retired rom

over 30 years in education so I was really ready to get

away and could go in the all, the best time to hit up

those arm elds. I was so excited I could hardly wait

to get there. I started working on my wish list o things I hoped to nd.

I have an E Trac which I purchased last year but still didnt really eel comortable using

it. Because o this I was going to borrow a detector to use while in the UK and just hope

or the best. Ater discussing this with many people, I was at the last minute convinced to

take the E Trac with me and I was so glad I did. One o Annes riends set it up or me ater I

had one rustrating day o nding way too much iron.

There was no stopping me ater that!

The hunt that day, which was at a small club

hunt in Oakhanger, produced a roman bula

brooch (one o my wish list!), a watch winder,

and a medieval mount or me.

The ollowing weekend we went to the

village o Glemsord or a rally o about 100treasure hunters, most o whom are riends

rom a UK detecting orum. The rally was a

und raiser or a local charity and was held

on hundreds o acres o arms surrounding

    Glemsord.

That Friday aternoon I experienced my

most dicult detecting ever. We hunted elds that were ideal; ploughed and attened.

But, it began raining and was very windy and with each step I added pounds o mud tomy boots and shovel. Walking and digging became almost impossible. But I persevered

with lots o buttons to show or the day. Buttons are hedge odder, or trash to the UK

    hunters!

    Saturday was an absolutely

beautiul day but the elds or

that day were certainly not ideal.

    One was roughly ploughed

and one was stubble and both

were devoid o many nds. I did

manage to nd a small thimble in

bad shape and I did check that o

my wish list. Most o the hunters

    that day returned to Fridays

elds, again with not much luck or me.

Sunday started o as a perect day o detecting with perect elds again. I was getting

rustrated because I still had not ound a hammered coin. Everything even close I showed

    Debby & Anne

to someone and was always told, sorry but that

is probably a token; denitely not a hammered

coin. One hunter said to me, listen or the little

whispers. Determined, I dug the next little

whisper, and out popped a 22 K gold ring, made

in Birmingham, England in 1848. Roman coins

started popping up everywhere and I managed tond 4 mysel and checked a third item o my wish list.. My best roman coin I ound was

Constantinople, dating around 330 AD. Heavy rain set in that aternoon and the heavy

mud chased me o the elds.

We spent several days sight seeing throughout Somerset county. O course

Stonehenge was our rst stop and was absolutely amazing to nally see up close. I loved

our drive along the coast line rom Weymouth, where the Olympic sailing will take place

in 2012 to Lyme Regis which was eatured in the movie Ocer and a Gentleman. The

abbeys and cathedrals in every little village were spectacular and I cant wait to go back to

My last day beore ying home was my most rustrating and yet produced my best nd

o my trip. We went to a arm eld that my riends had not hunted yet. The elds were

totally dead. We walked all the way

across with not one signal! I wasnt

nding anything so went over one

eld to look or Anne. She always

walks the perimeter o a eld and

I was looking or her along thehedge line. I got a solid, strong hit,

but not the normal low tones I was

hoping to nd. I dug it because

I thought maybe it was a coin.

    Out popped a 6 piece o metal. I

thought, maybe this is a piece o

a roman sword! But I didnt want

to be disappointed like I was with

each o my non-hammered coins I ound. So I walked

up to my riends, pulled out my nd, and in unison they

said Bloody h**l, that is a bronze age sword! It was

one o only 5 nds rom the eld that day. We posted

it on the UK orum or conrmation and all were in

agreement as to the identication.Sadly I let the next day, leaving my nd behind.

Anne will be taking it to her club meeting to have the

Finds Liason Ocer record it and determine i it will be

declared to be treasure. Most likely it will not, so then I

can apply or an export license and have it in my hands

once again! Ive been invited back again next year and

hope to stay even longer. Maybe Ill nd a hammered

coin and crotal bell to complete my wish list!

Troy Brown, Memphis, TN, USA My riend Brad and I were out in September, huntingan area that was supposed to hunted out. We had just stopped by the area because

the last place we visited only gave us a ew shotgun shells and lots o nails. I had neverseen so many nails in the ground and what a discouraging experience it was. I had thediscrimination on my F75 cranked up, knowing that Id miss some good signals but I stilldug, even the cracked up tones.

We drove into the hunted out area, Brad got out his Garrett and I unloaded mymachine. Normally, we had to walk the path down to eld which boarders a nice smallhardwood orest where weve always ound a ew relics, but the pickings have gottenewer. I decided to hunt down and o the path, since wed never done that beore, just tosee i anything might be there.

The rst signal I got was a 30.06 rie shell. Oh well, it registered as brass and thoughtto mysel perhaps no one has hunted in this area. Brad called out rom the other sideo the path where he was in, Found a drop! He gets real possessive o an area whensomething is ound and had claimed a 20-oot radius. Didnt bother me none, I kept onhunting. Got another signal and dug down, I had ound a dropped too and put it in mypouch. I walked about another 2 oot and ound another, then another...

We never did make it down to the eld, we had ound an overlooked area that hadbeen bypassed. That late aternoon, I ound about 20 minnieballs, Brad ound only 10.Both o us were happy with our new discovery area and plan to go back again.

Chris Hall, Burgess Hill, West Sussex, UK On Saturday September 25, I

attended a dig organised by the Central Searchers detecting club in North-

amptonshire. I regularly attend these digs, despite the 280 mile round triprom my home near Brighton in Sussex. They are a great bunch o people

and, although we would all like to nd something special, a lot o the appeal

is in the camaraderie o the group.

I hadnt searched these elds beore, and it wasnt long beore I realised

that the ground was heavily mineralised. I adjusted my XP Deus detector

accordingly and it wasnt long beore I was nding the usual buttons, bits o

lead and the odd coin. As a detectorist, Im always happy as long as Im nd-

ing something! Ater 4 hours o searching, I had plenty o nds, but nothing

that was worth showing to my ellow detectorists whenever we met up inthe eld.

Towards the end o the session, I received a rather strange signal in my

headphones. It sounded loud and the digital readout on the Deuss screen

was denitely encouraging me to dig. However, there was an iron buzz

there too. The target was only around 4 inches down and when it rst ap-

peared I thought I had ound the handle o a poker or something similar. The

arteact I was holding in my hand was just over 2 inches across and appeared

to be partially gilded. I wasnt particularly excited about it, but then I remem-

bered seeing something similar on-line. Thanks to the wonders o modern

technology, I was able to access the site on my iPhone there in the eld. I

was now pretty sure that I was holding an Anglo Saxon sword pommel - are

    detecting nd indeed!

Back at the snack van I showed my nd to Rich Evans, the Central Search-

ers organiser. He has immense experience o detecting, and o identiy-

ing the various coins and arteacts that club members bring to him. He

conrmed my suspicions that my nd was indeed a Saxon sword pommel.

Whats more, he pointed out all sorts o zoomorphic eatures that may beclearly seen in the accompanying photos. To me, one o the most amazing

eatures is the presence o two tiny jet eyes inset into one o the beasts! To

think that they are still in place ater maybe 1300 years in the soil is quite

    amazing! Rich also noticed that the pommel was at least partially solid silver;

this can be seen in areas where the gilding is worn.

The story is ar rom over at the time o writing! It has been conrmed

that the pommel dates to circa the 8th century AD and is made o silver gilt.

Finding an 8th Century Anglo SaxonSword Pommel

The iron signal mentioned earlier came rom the remnants o the iron blade o the origi-

nal sword. To an Anglo Saxon, the sword would have been his most treasured possession

and would almost certainly have had a pet name. As the metallic content o the pommelmeans that it is reportable under the Treasure Act o 1996, it is now en route to the British

Museum in London. I will eventually receive a ull report on my nd o a lietime, together

with a valuation. I no museum wants to purchase it, the pommel will be returned to me.

I it is purchased, I will receive hal o the value, with the other hal going to the landown-

er. Two independent and very experienced detectorists have estimated the value o the

pommel, once it has been proessionally restored, to be in the range 5000-10000! We

    shall see!

As a ootnote, I returned to the same eld with the club on the ollowing Saturday, but

no other parts o the sword were ound. There could well be a sword quillon down theresomewhere, or even Saxon grave goods i the sword was part o a burial.

Darren Minshall, Shropshire, UK I ound this on a

woodland path. The Silver War Badge was issued

in the United Kingdom to service personnelwho had been honourably discharged due towounds or sickness during World War I. The

badge, sometimes known as the DischargeBadge, Wound Badge or Services Rendered

Badge, was rst issued in September

1916, along with an ocial certicate oentitlement.

The sterling silver lapel badge was

intended to be worn in civilian clothes. It hadbeen the practice o some women to presentwhite eathers to apparently able-bodied young

men who were not wearing the Kings uniorm. Thebadge was to be worn on the right breast while in civilian

dress, it was orbidden to wear on a military uniorm.

The badge bears the royal cipher o GRI (or Georgius Rex Imperator; George, King andEmperor) and around the rim For King and Empire; Services Rendered. Each badge was

uniquely numbered on the reverse. The War Oce made it known that they would not

replace Silver War Badges i they went missing, however i one was handed into a policestation then it would be returned to the War Oce. I the original recipient could betraced at his or her discharge address then the badge would be returned.

Pete Briggs (Yeasty), Delaware, USA Today Dave

and I detected a state owned area which wehave been researching or quite a while. Daves

been a Whites guy or years but today he was

    using my E-Trac.

The area we were searching was occupied

all the way back to the late 1600s by Swedes

who originally colonized the area and

appears to have been used up to the 1950s.

Its pretty well wooded in now but most o

the trees didnt seem to be very old indicatingthat the ground was either armed or used as a

pasture by the last occupants. Our research also

told us that prior to 1812 there was a boat building

area near a creek where we were hunting and during

the war o 1812 the British Army rousted them away.

Well, we worked our way deep into the thick woods

and Dave called me over. He had dug out 2 large

coins which could have been either King

George halpences or possibly Large Cents. They were used together! The E-Trac gave

    Dave a whopping 13 47/50 signal. No

wonder rom a wad o copper that size!

    Both outer suraces seemed toasted

and unidentiable so he decided to wait

until he got home and make a decision

to separate them or not. We detected on

and nally came across some very large

stone walls which, rom our research, we

predicted would be there. They appear to

have been used or a dairy cow barn. Lots o

    large iron targets!

Ater nishing a very tiring day o detecting,

being insect eaten and briar scratched, we got back

to Daves house and he soaked the coins in water or a while and he was nally able to

    The 2 coin suraces which

    Unortunately I had to head

home but when I got there

    he had already cleaned up

    the 2 good suraces, taken

    in amazing condition due

to the act that they hadbeen joined and protected

each other in the ground, probably or more than 200 years.

The 1794 coin is a Liberty Cap Cent. 1794 is the second year that the rst US Mint

was in operation. Theres no way to identiy the year o its mate other than it was minted

somewhere between 1793 and 1807. Further research may tighten up the date range.

    Hi Detectorists,

My name is Mal and I have beena metal detectorist since 1978. Ilive in a small village just outside

Oxord with my wie and son surroundedby beautiul countryside steeped in historygoing back to the Iron Age.

I was rst introduced to metal detectingby a stranger I watched in a eld next towhere I was shing. He was walking aboutstrangely with this ying saucer on the end

o a metal pole and every now and thenhe dug a hole and put what he ound inhis pocket. Well curiosity got the better ome and I wandered across to see what hewas doing. He said he was hunting or oldcoins and he brought out o his pocket anassortment o old pennies and hal pennieshe had ound. I was hooked excuse thepun, shing orgotten and went about

nding out where to buy one o thesestrange machines.

I eventually tracked down a store thatsold them in Liverpool and bought aC-Scope TR200. O I went to a riend whoseather ran the local Public House. I searchedthe garden to see what I could nd and thiscreated quite a stir with the regulars, mewalking up and down with a strange device

attached to some headphones on myhead, they watch with great amusementand wanting to know what I was doing.

The clever ones throwing pennies in ronto me to see i I could nd them, I did and

just stuck them in my pocket. The upshotwas that I ound an Edward VII penny dated1901 and still use this as a ball markerwhen I am playing gol.

As technology progressed I upgrade mydetector over the years, rstly to C-Scope

VLF 1000, then Arado 120b, 130, TesoroGold Sabre and Toltec 100, Whites EagleSpectrum then switched to Minelab withthe Explorer range EXS, SE, and now usingthe ETrac and Excalibur II 10.

Every machine I have owned I have usedthe philosophy that I would not buy mynext machine until the current one hadpaid or itsel.

My current machine the Minelab ETracpaid or itsel in three weeks with ringsound rom the beach and my purchase o

the Excalibur has more than ound its shareo coins to cover its cost so ar two old.

With the Excalibur I try to get in thewater at the beach as regularly as the watertemperature allows. I have had many ringsand other jewellery rom the beach overthe years. I tend to spend about 75% o mydetecting time searching beaches as my

in-land sites are all armland that only allow

    Relic HunterReturns to England

Back again or another rally and

perhaps to nd some more treasures, except this time I will be in the UK

or 2 weeks! Camping out or 4 days in a

Norwegian tent, with a warm stove inside

and then staying with my riend, Tony Hunt

or the remainder o my visit, hunting a ew

o his antastic armers elds where I knew

    my nds would be waiting.

Hunting In EnglandIve had a lot o riends ask me how I got

involved with hunting in England. What

to look or and what to stay away rom in

Hunting Tours. So, as a prelude to my trip

across the pond, heres a brie synopsis about hunting in the elds o England.

Many Americans come to England to metal detect because o the age and possible

values o the items they may nd. There are several commercial ventures are making lots

o money o o interested, addicted relic hunters. Just be sure to check them out beore

you sign up and pay their ees. Keep in mind, its very easy to purchase old Roman coinson Ebay and other sites and plant them in a reserved eld to be discovered by hunters.

This insures that the detectorist always comes home with a prize discovery ater theyve

paid thousands o dollars or thrill o the hunt. Moreover, i theyve ound a gold coin,

that coin may have been purchased or $300 to $400 dollars, yet the hunter has paid

approximately $2,000 or the outing hope you see the prot margin and the possible

deception. Now Im not saying that all o these ventures are rip-os, just be careul

in choosing the right adventure and try to talk with others who have attended these

unctions. I the red ags are present in what theyve ound, youd do better to buy a bag

a coins o o Ebay! For those Americans who want to hunt in England or the rst time, as a good hunter,

do your research rst. Please be weary o commercial ventures that have promoted lots

oGold Coins ound. Honestly, theres a ew ound every month or so, mostly by locals,

but or the most part, these are ew and ar between. Finding Roman artiacts; such as

coins and brooches, appear to be more common. Finding an Anglo-Saxon coin or artiact

compares to digging up an American Civil War buckle here in the States. It happens, just

    not that much.

  • 7/29/2019 Relic Hunter Nov/Dec 2010

    29/52Relic Hunter November - December, 2010 2

Some Americans will pay or the all inclusive hunt o a lie-time. Where the promoter

will pick you up at the airport, drive you to a selected area in the countryside, place youand other hunters in a reserved Inn or a quaint B&B and promise you that Its going to be

the hunt o a lietime. Unortunately, these excited participants are no more than sheep

and theyre going to get, well, sheered.

First time Americans are usually awe-struck with the charm o England. I know I was,

15 years ago, when I rst landed in Manchester and got into the countryside, travelling

down some narrow roads and staying in a quaint village with an acquaintance. I still

am, every time I go, either rom the thatched rooed cottages, the scattered villages, the

castles, and most o all, Englands history. However, you cant leave out The Brit. They

are some o the most polite and accommodating people youll ever meet. Thats Lovelyand Thank you so much are mainstays in their vocabulary. As a Yank to them, I hope

our cousins across the pond see us in the same light.

Hunting in England, most likely will take place on a armers eld. Usually, the best

time to go is in the all. The armer has already harvested his crop, leaving possibly a

short stubble. These are the hardest to hunt because the stubble keeps your loop away

rom the ground, thus you lose depth on your nds. Sometimes these elds are raked,

  • 7/29/2019 Relic Hunter Nov/Dec 2010

    30/520 Relic Hunter November - December, 2010

breaking down the stubble, which makes it much

easier. This ground can be unusually hard. Makesure you have a sharp shovel, spade, that can break

the topsoil. However, many o the elds get plowed.

Plowed elds are the best and usually produce the

best results. Its been harrowed and turned over. The

harrowing will go down 8 to 10 inches, turning over

centuries o good stu and bringing it up near to the

top where your detector has no problem in nding

    the artiact.

Please, check out your hunting tour. I it sounds

too good to be true, chances are, it is. Remember, do

your research rst. Ask or reerences. Talk to those

who have already gone beore, see i theyd go again,

ask what they ound. The very best way to have a un

trip is to make a good riend across the pond and go

    hunting with them.

Going it alone... My trip usually beginsmonths ahead o the time Im supposed to leave. Since the last excursion, Ive usuallysaved up or most o my expenses. The rst major expense is the airare. Book early and

youll save some bucks. Check the airlines and see who has the best deal. Avoid getting

a ight that bounces you around several airports. Go or the direct ight, nonstop, and

theres less chance your luggage will end up in the Twilight Zone. Since youve packed

your detector, your clothes and whatever, its not much un to arrive in England and have

    nothing with you!

The next expense is having a mode o transportation. I youre lucky, there are buses

that leave rom the airport and go to many destinations, perhaps near to where you wantto go, i not, then youll need a car. I would suggest that you pre pay or your rental car.

It greatly cuts down on the paperwork. Youll arrive, and everything should be prepared.

This is a great time-saver; when all you want to do is get on the road to your destination.

Yes, they do have automatic transmissions i you preer not to shit with your let hand,

but honestly, its not all that dicult to manage shiting and youll save money with a

shiter. The gas, stop and clutch pedals, thank goodness, are the same as what we have.

Bring a GPS and have it pre-programmed to your destination. That way you wont

have to ask or directions and avoid trying to ollow some map. Inspect your car and have

the attendant mark any blemishes, marks, dents or scratches. Side mirrors are always

getting banged and broken. Once youve gone through some narrow streets youllunderstand why. When parking, close the mirrors into the car. Be advised that trac

cameras are all about, not only to monitor trac but some have radar and will take a nice

little photograph o your car should it be speeding along in a restricted zone. One thing

else drive on the let side. Youll notice this when you get in the car. Now you can wipe

    the sweat o your brow.

Where are you going to stay? Most Inns and B&Bs have websites where you can book

early or your room or you can just camp out, i youre inclined to do so. There are lots o

managed campsites around and their acilities are usually very nice. With the Inns and

B&Bs, chances are that they are aware o the event youll be attending and will give you

a special rate on lodging. Expect to pay between 40 to 50 Pounds per night. Most Inns

serve a complimentary breakast o eggs, sausages, toast and coee.

The Core Castle RallyFinally arriving in London, some 2 hours late because o being held up in Atlanta,

ying all night long, I couldnt sleep because my mind would not shut down, I went to

my rental car agency to pick up the car. I had prepaid or an automatic transmission.

For some reason, these are in high demand and very ew are available. Upon inspection,

this car had a ew bangs, dents, scratches and the let mirror was hanging on by justa wire. I kept my cool and asked or another. There wasnt one to be ound in the lot.

Reluctantly, I asked or a shiter and also

or an adjustment on my rental. Hertz was

very accommodating, gave me a nice car

and some generous terms were worked out.

Away I went, headed to the Core rally, some

2 hours away, now in heavy aternoon

trac. At least it wasnt raining.

You have reached your destination, my

Tom Tom spoke as I drove into the Norden

Farms driveway. It was going to be un to

see all my Brit riends again. Even though I

was a day early, there were still a lot o things

to do and perhaps some calm down, relax

The weekend beore, TheWeekend Wanderers had

their rally, one o the largest

and many o the people that

    had attended were setting

up at Core, waiting or the

rest o the group to arrive.

    This was the Core Rally,

    organized by Tony Hunt,

where he had obtainedpermission or us to detect

    on several hundreds o acres

    o prime armland. Its area

    rich with Roman, Celtic and

    English artiacts and its also

    a vacation area, located in

    the Southwestern part o

    England.

Originally, The CoreRally was established or

    orum, internationally

    organized or relic hunters

    that primarily own Minelab

detectors. This orum has members rom all over the world and is known as MLO,

Minelabowners orum. However, having a Minelab detector is not a prerequisite or

membership, many o the members also own Whites, Garrett, Fisher, Laser, Deus and

other machines. Its organized and maintained by Gary Brun, unded and supported by

individual membership dues and donations. MLO is simply a great club or knowledge

and inormation, displaying nds rom all over the world and the usual chit-chat that our

hobby generates, no matter what machine you use. http://www.minelabowners.com

Last year, I was the only American to attend. This year, Pat Watson, rom Nashville, and

a riend came. I also met another Yank with his wie, who gave me his Whites detector

dealership card. We had hunters rom all over.

Ater being hunted or nearly 10 years, some people considered that the armlands

around Core Castle were going to be barren and decided not to come. Attendance was

Ater the Core rally, hunting with Tony was a real

delight. Having more than a week o hunting, nearly

every day at some Roman area, surely spoiled me. We

visited several o his hunting sites and I tried not to ndtoo much but the deep sounds were just too good and

nds kept on coming out o the ground, as you can

    clearly see.

It always amazes me to dig up a coin thats been

These are just the coins, ater their rst soaking, cleaning of a millennium o years o dirt.

Not all my days were spent in the eld during

my extended stay with Tony and Gwen. We

did a bit o touring around or 2 days, seeingStonehenge, Woodhenge, Portsmouth, hell, we

even ate at KFC, one o Tonys avorite places to

eat. Imagine that, going to England just to eat at

    KFC.. I loved it.

We saw the great ships in Portsmouth, Victory,

Warrior and the Mary Rose Museum. You know,

thats the ship that sunk on its maiden launch.

The next day, Tony, David and I went out

detecting again. Nice eld and there were someRomans along with bits and pieces. I got a good

    deep tone and began digging.

I dug down about 7 inches, located a Roman

    Minimum, and thought, hummmm....

    I yelled out....

TONY... Ive got to photograph this... GOLD,

GOLD !!! you know, doing the little GOLD

    Dance, round and round.

Tony may be slow and deliberate when hes

detecting, but this man can move on his eet... In

2 seconds he was above the hole, reaching down,

picking up the coin and yelling Dave....DAVE !!!

    DAVE come here!!

Leaving the Mary Rose exhibit, I leaned over

to Gwen, pointed out a ew o the items or sale,

Diving on the wreck oThe Halswell

One nice surprise at the Core Castle

Rally was a visit by Ian Carruthers.Ian is a diver and has visited many

sites along the English coast. One

o these was the wreck site o The

Halswell, a merchant ship that sank

on the rocky coast in 1786. Ian, set

up a nice display on dozens o the

items he has recovered while diving

    on the wreck site.

The Halswell had encountered a violent

hurricane, and springing a leak, rapidly

began to ll. All hands were ordered to

the pumps, but by this time there was ve

eet o water in the hold, and the ship lay

over on her side. Every expedient to right

her proved ruitless. Main and mizen masts

were cut away. While doing this ve men

were washed overboard and drowned. The ury o the storm, however, had

abated, and by superhuman eorts the

crew kept the water in the hold under. Jury

masts were rigged up, and slowly the Hals-

well bore up or Portsmouth. But the wind

changed, and a heavy mist enshrouded all.

A gale was blowing, and hoping to reachthe shelter o Studland Bay, Captain Pierce

turned the vessels head towards Pevercl

Point, as he thought, but when the mist

    lited or a moment

    he ound himsel

    close under St.

    Albans Head.

    He knew that

once on that rockycoast all hope was

    gone. Bower and

    sheet anchors were

    let go, but ailed to

    hold the ship, or

    she dragged them

    with her and rap-

    idly drove in shore.

All hope o savingthe Halswell was

    now abandoned,

    and it seemed

    equally hope-

    less that in such a

storm anyone could reach the shore.

Amid the utmost terror and despair

she suddenly struck on a rock with a crash

that mingled with the wild cries o those

on board. In that part o the ship known as

the round-house some ty persons had

gathered around the veteran captain, who

sat clasping his terried daughters. Mightywaves dashed against the helpless vessel.

Her sides began to give way, and the con-

stant roll o the sea lited her deck. A ew

minutes more and she split apart.

With the dawn assistance came; too

late, or many who had clung on to the

ledges o the cli during that stormy

night which seemed endless had sunk

exhausted back into the angry sea. Only

a ew oating spars remained to mark her

    burial place.

    Ian has catalogued all

    o his items recovered so

    ar. Amongst the items that

    were shown in his display

    were silver coins, gold coins,

brass hardware, dozens opersonal eects rom the crew

    and passengers. What a ne

    collection and interesting talk.

    Thanks Ian, or the time

    Huntingwith a GPS

Omegamike - Rochester, Kent. UK Some GPS are better than others. I read plenty

o reviews and asked questions on this site beore I got one rom Ebay. As you will

see (below) mine is pretty damned accurate, just the odd glitch in bad weather (rainclouds), but apart rom that its pretty good.

You can view everything via Google Earth on your PC. You can save stu on your

GPS or when your out and about to download when you get home,

its pretty accurate but occasionally, usually bad weather, it goes o track by a ew

eet but only or a minute or so!.

Most GPS do a multitude o things, personally I only use about 5% o what its

capable o - just marking nds and plotting exactly where I have walked. I usually

download all the ino on a days detecting then delete it rom my GPS.

You can keep it on i you like especially i you want to get back to a hot spot in

the middle o a eld. But I have to say its really good pulling up Google Earth and

seeing all those nds plotted and recorded along with the routes walked - you just

wouldnt believe how many miles you walk over a period o months when your

    detecting.... ippin miles and miles

    Shows the nds,

    colour coded fags is

    my choice.
