Job Search Tip of the Month•Know what you want
•The purpose of your job hunt isn’t just to find any job; it’s to find a job that will bring you closer to your goals in life
•Plus, it makes your job search easier!
Job Search Tip of the Month, cont.•Take some time & think about what you want in terms of:
-Job role, title & responsibilities -Salary, compensation & overtime -Health care & other benefits -Vacation, time off, work hours & flexibility -Location & commute **this is a big one in Hampton Roads! -Reputation of company
Job Search Tip of the Month, cont.•Make a “job decision grid”
•4 columns: Criteria, What I Want, What I Will Accept & What I Won’t Accept
•List everything on the previous slide in the first column (“Criteria”): salary, hours, commute, benefits, etc.
-List them in order of importance, most important at the top -Take as long as you need to determine your priorities
Job Search Tip of the Month, cont.•Make a “job decision grid,” cont.
•Put some thought into each item/column: -What do you want for each criterion? (this is the ideal) -What will you accept? (this is the minimum) -What won’t you accept? (this is anything below the minimum)
Job Search Tip of the Month, cont.•Use your job decision grid
•Once you know what you want, start using that information in your searches (online & otherwise)
-Ex.: job title, salary, location
•Be open to temporary, part-time, project-based or other trial jobs, esp. if you’re not sure about what matters most to you
Job Search Tip of the Month, cont.•Stay flexible
•If a job meets most but not all of your “will accept” guidelines, apply for it
-You might be able to negotiate the stuff that doesn’t meet your guidelines if you get offered the position
•Embrace new opportunities & be prepared to learn new skills
Job Search Tip of the Month, cont.•But don’t be too flexible
•If a job requires that you sacrifice any of your principles or values, don’t apply for it or take it if offered
•Don’t apply to every job that you see unless it fits your “What I Want” or “What I Will Accept” lists
•And never take a job you know you’ll hate or can’t do!
Safety Tips of the Month•Whether your workplace is a warehouse, a banquet or a desk, you need to stretch regularly!
•Athletes stretch all the time to improve their performance; so should you
Safety Tip of the Month, cont.•Shrug your shoulders
•Inhale deeply & shrug your shoulders, lifting them high up to your ears
•Hold, then release & drop •Repeat 3 times
Safety Tip of the Month, cont.•Loosen the hands with air circles
•Stretch both hands out in front of you & clench your fists •Make 10 circles in the air with your fists in the same
direction •Reverse the direction of the circles •Shake out the hands
Safety Tip of the Month, cont.•Stretch the hands, wrists & forearms
•Stretch a hand out in front of you, fingers pointing down •Gently pull your fingers down & in with the other hand •Now stretch your hand out straight in front, wrist bent,
with fingers pointing up •Gently pull your fingers back with the other hand •Switch sides
Safety Tip of the Month, cont.•Release the upper body with a torso twist
•While standing or sitting, turn as far to the right as you can, keeping your eyes level
•Use your chair or the wall to increase the stretch •Hold the twist & let your eyes continue the stretch; see
how far around the room you can peer •Slowly come back to forward; repeat on the other side
Safety Tip of the Month, cont.•Stretch your back with a “big hug”
•Hug your body, placing the right hand on your left shoulder & the left hand on your right shoulder
•Breathe in & out, releasing the area between your shoulder blades
Safety Tip of the Month, cont.•Cross your arms—for the shoulders & upper back
•Extend one arm out straight in front of you •With the other hand, grab the elbow of the outstretched
arm & pull it across your chest, stretching your shoulder & upper back muscles
•Hold, release, then repeat on the other side
Safety Tip of the Month, cont.•Stretch your back & shoulders with a “leg hug”
•Sit on the edge of your chair with your feet together, flat on the floor
•Lean over, chest to knees, arms dangling loosely down •Release your neck •Now bring your hands under your legs & grasp them
together; hold, then release
Safety Tip of the Month, cont.•Look up to release upper body
•Sit up tall, or stand up •Stretch your arms overhead & interlock your fingers •Turn the palms to the ceiling as you lift your chin up, tilt
your head back & gaze up at the ceiling too •Inhale, exhale, then release
