for a proactive maintenance strategy.Condition Monitoring (CM) is a broad name for
evaluating maintenance requirements based on
specific performance indicators of a plant.
Adopting a CM programme will minimise
maintenance actions without sacrificing integrity
or reliability of the system.
Understanding why assets fail is key, and
identifying and measuring the failure mode is
vital to the strategy. Failure modes can be
defined from operational history, industry
knowledge or from the equipment manufacturer.

Rockwell Automations Reliability Online (ROL)
is a unique service designed to provide cost-
effective results for CM programmes. It provides
the advantage of an in-house integrated CM
programme, but managed remotely, and without
the capital investment. Reliability Online delivers
results with minimal investment in equipment,
training and personnel. It uses the internet or
e-mail to access a central team of highly skilled
engineers, providing timely maintenance
recommendations.
RELIABILITY ONLINE IN REALITY
Following a plant audit, data collection intervals are
set, measurement points defined, and if required,
transducers are installed. A web link is provided
to connect the plant to Rockwell Automations
skilled engineers. The data is then collected andtransferred to the secure website. An analysis will
lead to a prompt report on the status of the
assets, allowing appropriate maintenance
activities to be planned in a timely manner.
THE IMPORTANCE OF UPTIME
A recent ARC Advisory Group study estimated
that in the US more than $20 billion is lost
each year due to unscheduled downtime
clearly fail and fix maintenance is not a viable
maintenance strategy.

The CM services offered by Rockwell Automation

Based on machine criticality, the best intervals
for data collection are set, either periodic
or continuous

be performed by surveillance, walk-around, or
