Selection Policy Revised 2007 It appears that the selection policyaddresses video in detail but print

sources are not addressed at all.

The following site from an ALA workbook for writing policyprovides a detailed, step-by-step process for addressing

this specific policy and includes print resources in media

selection.

Utilization/

Organization

Revised 5/07 This policy includes access and

delivery, references Information

Power, Building Partnerships for

Learning, and SACS procedures,

including policy/procedures on

cataloging, collaboration, and

access to media resources.

Since the media center utilizes the county policy and does

not clearly indicate its own access policy, there should bea specific policy outlining this. The site below lists the

hours of the media center and the policy for accessing the

media center.

CooperativePlanning/

Collaboration

Revised 2007 Collaboration is included as partof the flexible scheduling policy.

Since the Media Specialist

Evaluation Instrument specifically

addresses collaboration, I think

that this policy should be

addressed separately. Flexible

scheduling allows teachers and

students to come into the mediacenter, but it does not establish

collaboration.

The following link provides a good example of theexpectations from all parties who use the media center as

part of instruction.

http://www.mrsbentheim.com/Collaboration-Policy

Copyright (Fair Use) Revised 2007 This policy cites Title 17 of the U.S.

Code, the fair use policy, and

videotaping. However, there are

other areas of copyright not

included in the county policy and

should be addressed at the schoollevel.

The site below includes some necessary items regarding

copyright policy. For example, the first part of the policy

states how an individual can go about asking for

permission to use copyrighted information. Additionally,

there is additional information about software copyright

as well.http://bellevuecollege.edu/lmc/handouts/Copyright.pdf

Since the school does not have its own policies, and acts

on the county policies, items such as these are not

addressed, but should be part of the media specialists

responsibilities.

This policy includes networkresponsibility, including a section

that addresses inappropriate use

of the network. The school uses a

Network Responsibility

Agreement form that both

parents and student must sign.

An additional form is required of

staff members who use thecounty network.

No additional information is required.

IFBGA (2)

In accordance with CIPA this

policy outlines the county policy

for blocking objectionable

material.

Although the policy clearly states how the county is incompliance with CIPA, it does not address how or when the filtering system is updated nor does itaddress the possibility of allowing sites to beaccessed if they are proven to be useful for instructional purposes. The site below is a good

example of addressing these issues.http://www.8e6.com/documents/.../ Internet _Safety _ Plan _ Template.doc

This policy outlines school website

creation, a requirement for all

faculty. Included is a form that

has to be signed by faculty

members acknowledging thatthey will adhere to the county

policies concerning what can be

shared through teacher created

websites.

I think this policy needs to incorporate the language of 21st

century tools (wikis, podcasts, blogs) as part of the policy.

Circulation There was no suchpolicy specifically

addressed in the

county media

handbook.

This policy, I assume, wasimplicitly addressed in access, but

since no school policy is included

as part of the county policy, the

schools policy is not stated and

should be.

This site provides detailed information about checking outresources, overdue fines, and lost or damage charges. I

chose it over other school policies because it encourages

all users to be good stewards of the resources provided by

the media center, even though it addresses students in

particular and not teachers.

http://zope.illinoisplinkit.org/site_lcls_gca/about-

us/library-policies

Confidentiality There were no such

policy addressed in

the county media

handbook.

I didnt know that what students

check out is private. Reading

about this policy as taught me a

lot about confidentiality and since

it has legal ramification, it

certainly should be addressed in

the policies.

I chose this site because it provides detailed information

on privacy. Items such as the deletion of information that

provides tracking, a section that outlines the need for

parents to teach their children about giving out personal

information, who from the library can legally give out

personal information and security measures to keep

ensure privacy and confidentiality.

Teacher/Student

Evaluation

Revised 5/07 Since teachers and students are

critical elements of a media

program, this policy is essential.

The staff of the media center

should solicit feedback from both

students and teachers in order toadjust and change media practices

that are beneficial for instruction.

No additional information is required.
