NWU Replaces Uniforms

• Working Utilities• Tropical working uniforms• Wash Khakis• Winter Working Blue• Aviation Working Green • Non-Tactical /Environmental usage

of camouflage utility uniforms (CUU)



Occasion for wear

• At SEA and ASHORE• All facilities on base• Commuting to/from work

and home via POV or Public transportation

• GOVT/MIL contracted flights to or from OCONUS locations.



Commuting Stops

• Routine stops not authorized• Genuine emergencies authorized such as:

– Medical– Vehicle breakdowns

Stopping for drinks, gas for vehicles, shopping, etc are not authorized!

Adherence to this policy is paramount for the CNO to expand the wear policy!



CNRMA NWU ROLL OUT

• Commence in two phases• Phase I

– TIDEWATER area includes NC, WV, VA, MD except those portions located inside of Naval district Washington commence immediately.

• Complete transition to NWU shall be accomplished within the Tidewater area NLT 1 October 2009

• Phase II– All those mid-Atlantic Commands outside of

the Tidewater area commences 1 October 2009.



EXECUTION

• Commanding Officers designate specific date for transition.

• CNI/NMITC CO/XO/CMC/SEL may wear NWU effective 02 Mar 09.

• E7 and above may wear NWU starting 16 Mar 09.

• E6 and below may wear NWU starting 30 Mar 09.



Basic Components• Navy Blue Cotton Undershirt• Black boot socks• Blousing straps• 9 inch black leather safety boots• 1 ¼ inch unisex grade dependent (Khaki or Black)

Cotton or Nylon web belt with buckle (Silver for E6 and below and Gold for E7 and above)

• Unisex eight point Cap• Unisex shirt and trousers• Collar devices (E4 and above)• Service and name tape

• Navy Blue Cotton Undershirt• Black boot socks• Blousing straps• 9 inch black leather safety boots• 1 ¼ inch unisex grade dependent (Khaki or Black)

Prescribed Components

– Black Mock Neck Sweater • Wear over the undershirt and beneath the

NWU shirt (blouse)– Matching Gortex Parka with black

removable fleece liner

• 9 inch black rough-out safety boots• Earmuffs (with outer-garments only)• Earrings (gold ball for Female E7 and

above and silver ball for Female E6 and below)

• Overshoes• Black leather gloves (with outer-

garments only)



Embedded Features

– Seal of the Navy Flag with the letters “USN”directly beneath it.

– The SEAL (emblem) includes the following• Anchor• Three-Masted square rigged ship• An Eagle• Abbreviated “ACE” which stands for

Anchor, USS Constitution and Eagle. • Located on the Left pocket

ACE



Breakdown of the NWU

• A battle dress utility style uniform• Constructed of:

– 50/50 % Nylon/Cotton twill fabric• Four colors:

– Deck Gray– Haze Gray– Black– Navy Blue– In a digital pattern design



Authorized Caps• Eight Point Cap

– Worn squarely on the head.– Visor is on the a line and just above the level of the eyes– Officers, Chiefs and Petty Officers wear Rate/Rank

centered on the front.– Bottom of insignia will be approximately 1-1/4 inch from

the visor• Officers wear regular size embroidered grade insignia.

When wearing Eagle insignia, it faces to the right• Chief Petty Officers wear the 1 ¼ inch embroidered insignia• Petty Officers wear the regular size embroidered PO

insignia• E3 and Below will not wear a cap insignia



Authorized Caps

• Standard Navy Knit Watch Cap– Worn during cold weather

conditions that may result in personal injury

– Rank/Rate insignia not authorized to be worn on the watch cap



Undershirts / Organizational

• Undershirts:– Navy blue– Cotton– Quarter-length sleeve– An elliptical (crew-neck) collar

• Organizational issued and personally purchased thermal underwear:– Authorized underneath the NWU undershirt

and trousers– Not visible when worn underneath the

undershirt



NWU Blouse• Two Chest Pockets w/flaps &

concealed button for closure• Pencil pocket in left chest pocket• ACE on left pocket (embroidered)• Two pockets on the upper sleeves

w/flaps & concealed button for closure

• Adjustable wrist tabs with single button hole

• Worn outside the waistband of the trousers



Blouse Sleeves

• Sleeves may be rolled up year round.

• In formation, all hands shall have sleeves in the same position for uniformity

• Roll sleeves w/cuff right-side out forming a 3 inch wide band covered by the cuff of the shirt.

• Termination point of the roll is approximately 2 inches above the elbow



Blouse Identification Badges

• The following identification badges are authorized:

– NAVY, Fleet, Force, Command Master, Senior, Chief badges, Command Career Counselor, Recruit Division Commander, and Security/Law enforcement.

Wearing of authorized badges in the following manner:– Enlisted wear badges on the shirt, centered on the wearer’s

left pocket flap.– Officers wear badges above the wearer’s right pocket,

centered ¼ inch above their name.

– IDENTIFICATION BADGES CAN BE EITHER METAL OR EMBROIDERED ON A STRIP OF NWU FABRIC.

– Pin on devices shall not be worn when metal devices might present a FOD or safety hazard.



Warfare Qualifications

• Maximum of two warfare/qualification insignia authorized

• Embroidered on NWU Pattern, rectangular/square and approximate size of the insignia.

• Primary breast insignia centered above and flush with the “U.S. NAVY”identification marking

• Secondary breast insignia centered on the wearer’s left pocket flap.



Warfare & Identification Badges

• Enlisted authorized to wear the two warfare/ qualifications insignia and an identification badge wear in the following manner:– Wear primary and secondary centered and

flush above the “U.S. NAVY” fabric strip

The NWU is the only uniform in which two warfare insignias may be worn in this manner



Blouse Identification Markings

– Names will be embroidered in approximately 3/4 inch block letters on approximately 1-1/4 inch wide fabric strips. Names exceedingly longer can be embroidered in approximately ½inch letters.

– Proper location are as follows:• Wearer’s surname sewn centered above and flush with the

top of the wearer’s right pocket.• "U.S. NAVY" sewn centered above and flush with the top of

the wearer’s left pocket.• RATING BADGES WILL NOT BE WORN OR STENCILED ON

THE NWU.• Authorized (current assignment) Force or Command / Unit

patch may be worn on the wearer’s right breast pocket. The size of the patch shall not exceed 3 TO 3-1/2 inches in length, width and diameter. When worn, the patch will be sewn on and centered on the pocket below the flap to allow for easy removal and minimum expense.



Trousers

• Wearer’s surname sewn centered above & flush with the top of right rear trouser pocket.

• Front fly w/brass zipper and buttoned (elastic) waistband closure

• Two side pockets• Two hip pockets with flaps• Two pleated cargo pockets, flaps

concealed button closures and elasticized pocket opening



PARKA• The only authorized outerwear worn

w/NWU• Detachable Black Fleece liner

provides protection during extremely cold conditions

• Black Fleece liner only liner authorized

• Fleece liner is not authorized to be worn as a stand alone outer-garment

• Equipped with a fold-out hood located inside the velcro closure section of the collar

• To ensure the water tight integrity, puncturing, pinning, or sewing items on the parka is no authorized.



PARKA Continued• Fabric pull on/off rank insignia tabs shall be

worn by E4 and above on the chest pull tab as follows:

• Officers, with the exception of Vice Admirals and Admirals, will wear a slip-on version of the regular size embroidered grade insignia. Eagle insignia, Eagle faces to the wearer’s right. Vice Admirals and Admirals will wear a slightly smaller size insignia to accommodate the insignia’s proper fit on the tab. Stars will be stacked vertically point to center.

• MCPO/Senior and CPO’s will wear a slip-on version of the 1/1/4 inch embroidered cap devices on the tab.

• PO1, PO2 and PO3 will wear a slip-on version of the appropriate embroidered Petty Officer Cap device on the tab. Eagle faces to the wearer’s right

• Rating specialty insignias are not authorized to be worn on the tab.
