MORE STUDY OPTIONS
STILL IN SCHOOL AND WANT TO GET A HEAD START?Our Start Uni Now (SUN) and Vocational Education and Training in Schools (VETiS) programs may be of interest.
START UNI NOW (SUN)SUN offers Year 10^, 11 and 12 students the opportunity to study CQUniversity units from degree‑level courses while still in secondary school. Your studies may also contribute towards your Certificate of Education (eg. QCE, WACE, SACE, or VCE). You can enrol in a range of units, either on campus (face to face) or online, and combine them with your regular school work. After successful completion of a SUN unit, you may be eligible to apply for direct entry into your preferred course (excluding quota managed courses) and receive credit toward your degree. For more information, visit www.cqu.edu.au/sun.
VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING IN SCHOOLS (VETiS) VETiS offers Year 10†, 11 and 12 Queenlsand students the opportunity to study VET courses as part of their Queensland Certificate of Education. You can choose between certificate I, II, III, IV and diploma level courses in a wide variety of disciplines. Benefit from developing real trade skills and qualifications while completing secondary school. If you’re in Year 11 you can include a VETiS certificate III qualification or higher to contribute to your ATAR. For more information visit www.cqu.edu.au/vetis.
If you’re a high school teacher interested in delivering VET qualifications at your school in your specialisation, contact us to discuss partnership opportunities. Email [email protected].
APPRENTICESHIPS AND TRAINEESHIPSThe steps to becoming an apprentice or trainee are different to becoming a student at university or TAFE.
Generally, you will be required to find an employer who is willing to employ you as an apprentice or trainee. During your apprenticeship or traineeship, your employer (or Group Training Organisation/Job Services Australia provider) may arrange for you to undertake vocational education and training at CQUniversity.
Our apprenticeship and traineeship courses cover a wide range of areas, visit www.cqu.edu.au/apprenticeships.
FEE-FREE COURSES FOR QUEENSLAND YEAR 12 GRADUATESThanks to the Queensland Government, if you are a Queensland resident and have graduated Year 12 with a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) and are keen to start your studies within the next calendar year, you may be eligible to study a TAFE course with us fee‑free in high‑priority study areas. You must meet eligibility requirements. For more details visit our website and search ‘free TAFE for Year 12 graduates’.
^ Year 10 students are eligible for Term 3 enrolment only.
† Students need to be at least 15 years of age at the commencement of classes. Applications by Year 10 students may be considered for admission.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ATARS
WHAT IS AN ATAR? An ATAR is the national standard measure of your high school academic achievement and gives you a rank relative to other Year 12 students. Your ATAR represents your percentile rank and is a number on a 2000‑point scale from 99.95, which is the highest rank, down to 0.00 with any ATARs below 30 reported as ‘30.00 or less’. ATARs are used as a measure for tertiary study selection.
WHO WORKS OUT YOUR ATAR?In each state the relevant tertiary admission centre (TAC) calculates ATAR scores. It all forms part of the work each TAC does administering the application and offer process on behalf of the relevant tertiary institutions in each state.
HOW DOES YOUR ATAR HELP YOU GET INTO UNIVERSITY?Your ATAR will be used to meet entry requirements. You will also need to meet any required entry score thresholds, prerequisites and any other entry requirements as relevant for your course of interest.
WHAT IF I AM STUDYING A VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING (VET) QUALIFICATION WHILE AT SCHOOL?Successful completion of a VET qualification may contribute to your ATAR if it is a certificate III, certificate IV or diploma‑level qualification. Your result will undergo similar scaling to general and applied subjects. If your VET qualification result is one of your top five eligible subject results it will be used to help calculate your ATAR.
WHAT IF I DON’T GET THE ATAR I NEED TO BE CONSIDERED FOR A COURSE?An ATAR isn’t the only way to get into a course at university. If you don’t receive the ATAR you need to be considered for a course, check out our alternate entry pathways on page 36 or get in touch with us to talk through your options.
WHERE CAN I FIND OUT MORE?Get in touch with us by phone on 13 27 86, chat to us via Facebook or search ‘ATAR Information’ on our website.
Not sure where to start when it comes to the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR)? We’re here to help you find out more.

ATAR INFO FOR QUEENSLAND STUDENTS If you’re a Queensland high school student, ATARs will be new for you so we’ve put together some more detailed information that you may find helpful.
HOW IS YOUR ATAR CALCULATED?Your ATAR is calculated based on the sum of your five best scaled subject results (from your eligible inputs). Based on your results and the state’s Year 12 population, you’ll be placed in an ATAR band, which is your ATAR.
Eligible ATAR inputs refer to the below study patterns:
» Five general subjects (Units 3 and 4) » Four general subjects (Units 3 and 4) and
an applied subject (Units 3 and 4) » Four general subjects (Units 3 and 4),
and one completed VET qualification (this must be a certificate III or above).
Your results from the above subject combination options must accumulate within a five‑year period.
You must also achieve a C grade or higher in an English subject (one of English, English as an Additional Language, English and Literature Extension, Literature, or Essential English), but your English result will only be included in your ATAR calculation if it’s one of your top five scaled results.
There are some subject combination rules you must follow:
» Only General English or Applied English subjects can be included in the ATAR, but not both.
» Only General Maths or Applied Maths subjects can be included in the ATAR, but not both.
» ATAR results can’t include the results of a general subject and the results of the same subject taken via the Senior External Examination.
WHAT DOES A HIGHER ATAR MEAN? Unlike an Overall Position (OP), the higher the ATAR, the higher your percentile rank. For example, an ATAR of 90.00 means that you are in the top 10 per cent of Year 12 students in Queensland in your cohort.
We’ve sourced this information from the Queensland Tertiary Admission Centre (QTAC) website www.qtac.edu.au. Be sure to check the QTAC website for the most recent ATAR information relevant to Queensland students.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ATARS | 35

START UNI NOW (SUN)Our SUN program is a valuable alternate entry pathway for high school students thinking about studying a CQUni course. For more information including the direct entry eligibility criteria for SUN students, visit www.cqu.edu.au/sun.
ALTERNATE ENTRY PATHWAYS
PRINCIPAL’S RECOMMENDATION SCHEMEAt CQUniversity we believe senior schooling results are important, but we also believe that other factors such as motivation, talent, and passion can lead to student success at university. So, we have introduced the Principal’s Recommendation Scheme.
As a Year 12 student, this Scheme allows you to apply to a CQUniversity course based on the written recommendation of your high school principal rather than an ATAR. It’s an ideal pathway if you haven’t studied for an ATAR or if you have experienced exceptional circumstances that have impacted your senior schooling results. To find out more, search ‘Principal’s Recommendation Scheme’ on our website.
VET QUALIFICATIONIf you hold a certificate III, certificate IV or diploma qualification, you may meet specified entry score requirements for many of our associate, bachelor and bachelor with honours degrees. To find out more about the entry score attached to your VET qualification and the courses that it may satisfy entry to, search ‘ATAR Information’ on our website.
If you have a completed VET qualification and you’ve also completed the necessary subjects to receive an ATAR, you will receive two ranks; a selection rank for your VET qualification, and an ATAR. When you apply to study with CQUni, your application will be assessed on whichever score is highest.
