1 INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this document is to inform the users about new features and changes in the Nauticus
Machinery October 2014 release (v12.0). This release is fully backward compatible with the December
2013 release (v11.5).
Nauticus Machinery October 2014 release (v12.0) is a major release and a lot of enhancements and
changes has been done. The main features can be summarized as:
- General
o A portable local database is introduced by using SQLite and user can use either this light
database or use previous server database (use Microsoft SQL Server Express). Refer to
Nauticus Machinery Workflow Manager user manual for more information.
o The installer is improved and it is split into Client and Server. The older users or users
who want only use SQLite as database can only install Client. Read the Installation Guide
for more information
o Direct-X is removed and graphic model like the Shaft Alignment view model is updated
by new method. Thus the installation supports windows 8, 64 bit OS.
- Nauticus Controllable Pitch Mechanism
o It is a new calculation tool which is developed in close cooperation with DNV GL Approval
Center and the calculation methodologies are based on DNV GL’s long term experience
and knowledge from damage cases. The software calculates the static and fatigue
strength capacity for the components in pitch control mechanism and propeller hub. Both
main class and ice class requirements are implemented. As these methodologies are still
in the process of being updated and not officially published in DNV GL rule, we consider
this release as a beta version.
- Nauticus Shaft Alignment
o The calculation efficiency is highly improved
o The method to consider the shear deformation in FEA-solver is improved
o The report generator and result viewer are renewed to be more user friendly
o The result of Input data – all data is revised to show complete information of all
conditions
o The buoyancy correction setting is improved and user is able to specify the water/oil
density
o Jack stiffness is considered in the jacking calculation
o New chart result Bearing loads seen from aftward is introduced to show the bearing
resultant force
- Nauticus Torsional Vibration
o Implement the steady state approach to handle the ice impacting on the propeller
Notice: The steady state approach to handle the ice impacting is not officially recognized in
the DNV rules. As far as this release it is unknown if DNV GL will accept this method in
future common rule sets. Consequently, the time domain analysis is the only approach that
is currently accepted by DNV Class. Until the release of the common DNV GL rule set, it is
not advisable to use the steady-state approach in the final design of ice class projects
| RELEASE NOTE | Nauticus Machinery version 12.0 Page 3
under DNV Class.
o Introduce the partial firing condition for engine excitation to simulate the gas engine’s or
dual fuel engine’s imbalanced combustion.
o Implement the electric motor and generator-set excitation
- Nauticus Crankshaft Fatigue
o Support digitized cylinder pressure curves
- Nauticus Shaft Fatigue, Nauticus Propeller Blade and Nauticus Gear Rating&Faceload
o Small improvement and known issue fixed
Your feedback is important to us and the above improvements are a result of such. We thank you for your
continuous support to Nauticus Machinery. If you have any suggestions, questions or problems please
send an email to: [email protected] or contact one of our local DNV GL Software offices.
2 HIGHLIGHT OF NEW RELEASE
There are five important issues in the 12.0 release.
- A new portable local database (SQLite) is introduced. This database can be copied and reused in
different users. User can sync the projects and calculations between this local database and the
server database (Microsoft SQL Server Express). For the standalone users or users do not need
to remote a database can only install the Client installer and use this local database.
- A new calculation tool, Nauticus Controllable Pitch Mechanism, is implemented.
- The Shaft Alignment solver is improved from two points: A new methodology of considering
shear deformation is introduced to improve the calculation accuracy; the method to form the
stiffness matrix and the numerical calculation method are changed to improve the calculation
efficiency.
- The steady state approach to handle the ice impacting on the propeller is implemented in
Nauticus Torsional Vibration
- Nauticus Crankshaft Fatigue supports digitized cylinder pressure curves

3 HOW TO UPGRADE
The new version of Nauticus Machinery can be downloaded from the Customer Portal. Browse to
Customer Portal web-site: http://dnvs.force.com/ and log in with your account and find the relevant
installer.
You will need a user name and password to access the Customer Portal. To request a username and
password, enter your email address to apply. Once you have accessed our Customer Portal, you will find
the latest version of the applications by navigating to the Software Downloads tab and selecting Nauticus
from the drop down menu.
More details about the installation and upgrade process can be found in the Installation Guide on the Doc
folder on the installation CD or download.
Nauticus Machinery consists of one client and one server setup. The server setup will install Microsoft
SQL Server Express and the corresponding database schemes. The client setup will install all the
calculation tools and local portal SQLite database.
If Nauticus Machinery 8.0 or later is already installed on the computer, it will only be
necessary to run the client setup. Different versions of the client part of Nauticus Machinery
can exist on the same computer, e.g. Nauticus Machinery 11.5 and 12.0 can be run in parallel.
There is full backward compatibility with regards to models made in previous versions, but
each model file will be upgraded to the new version when it is loaded. If a model is upgraded
to for instance version 12.0, it will not be possible to open it in previous versions anymore. In
such cases it would be better to duplicate the model (copy/paste) before it is upgraded to the
latest version.
For the old users who still want to use the existing database, select Connect SQL server
during the installing client.

Local portable database
The SQLite database will be automatically installed to your local folder e.g.
“C:\DNVGL\Machinery\MachineryData.db” during Client installation. User can copy this database to any
other computer and reuse by define the database file path in the software Settings => Database
connection
Switching between Server database and Portable local database is also supported. User can sync the
calculations in the projects between server database and local database by the following steps:
o Go to Projects and Calculations page.
o Select one or several calculations in one projects
o Press the button Copy to Local (or Copy to Server if you connected to the local database)
| RELEASE NOTE | Nauticus Machinery version 12.0 Page 12
o A new dialogue will show up to let you import the selected calculations to the project in the target database
Improved calculation efficiency in Nauticus Shaft Alignment
The calculation efficiency has been highly improved by improving the method of forming the stiffness
matrix and the numerical calculation method. Additionally, one more calculation option is added in the
Calculate button:
- Calculate: calculate all the results
- Calculate without RIN: calculate all the results but reaction influence number. It will save more calculation
time.
Consider the shear deformation in Nauticus Shaft Alignment
Shear deformation will play an important role for the short and wide shaft (beam). Nauticus Shaft
Alignment v12.0 has improved the way to consider the shear deformation in FEA-solver. The deformation
factor is dependent on the geometry of shaft section. Thus the calculation results (e.g. bearing load,
reaction influence number and so on) will be bit different comparing with previous versions.

The steady state approach to handle the ice impacting in Nauticus TVC
As mentioned in chapter 1 time domain analysis is the only method accepted for ice impacting torsional
vibration calculation as far as now. It is not advisable to use the steady-state approach in the final design of
ice class projects. User could use this method to do some comparison with time domain analysis or do some
initial design.
According to the ice class rules (e.g. Legacy DNV Rule Part 5 Chapter 1 Section 3 and Section 8) the
propeller ice torque excitation for shaft line dynamic analysis can be described by a sequence of blade
impacts which are of half sine shape and occur at the blade. The torque due to a single blade ice impact is
a function of the propeller rotation angle. The ice torque excitation in time-domain could like the following
chart. There is ramp up at start of impacting and ramp down at the end of impacting. One ice milling
sequence will last limited time.
In Nauticus TVC, the steady state approach to handle the ice torque considers the ice milling sequence as
steady state and the ramping up part and ramping down part are neglected. The Fourier transform method
is used to convert the excitation from time domain to the frequency domain. Then such frequency domain
excitations (harmonics) are considered in steady state torsional vibration calculation.
| RELEASE NOTE | Nauticus Machinery version 12.0 Page 15
In the software the first four blade frequencies’ excitation orders are considered in the calculation. They
detail information of converted harmonics are shown in the text result “Ice Excitation Harmonic
Component Data”.
The IceClass notation and other necessary parameters for ice impacting calculation are specified on the
propeller property grid. These parameters are mainly used to calculate the maximum propeller ice torque
Tmax. All the ice excitation patterns share these common settings.
In the load case setting window, different ice excitation patterns can be defined for the different load
cases.
| RELEASE NOTE | Nauticus Machinery version 12.0 Page 16
Parameter Cq and αi can be overwrite by the user.
If Tmax is constant and equal to the value at bollard condition is selected, Tmax will be constant and
independent of the rotational speed. The constant Tmax will be calculated basing on the bollard condition
rotational speed SpeedBollardCondition.
If Tmax is corrected according to the actual rotational speed is selected, n in the calculation Tmax formula
(check the following formulas to calculate Tmax according to the ice class rule) will be changing with the
actual rotational speed during the speed range.
If Tmax is corrected according to propeller law (n^2) is selected, Tmax at rotational speed n will follows the
propeller law (n^2). 𝑇max_𝑛 = 𝑇max_𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑𝐵𝑜𝑙𝑙𝑎𝑟𝑑𝐶𝑜𝑛𝑑𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 ∗ (𝑛
