    LEARN ABOUT RELAY

    Page Title: Learn About Relay

Meta Title: Learn About Relay For Life | Relay For Life

Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the

globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember

loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease.

At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take

turns walking or running around a track or path. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays

are overnight events up to 24 hours in length. Relayers do not have to walk all night, but

each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event.

    What Is Relay

Each year, more than 3.5 million people in 5,000 communities in the United States, along with

additional communities in 20 other countries, gather to take part in this global phenomenon and raise

much-needed funds and awareness to save lives from cancer.

    Why We Fundraise

Thanks in part to generous contributions to Relay For Life, the American Cancer Society helps

people to get well, stay well, find cures and fight back against cancer. Funds raised through Relay

What Happens at a Relay Event

There are many moments that create the Relay experience. Specific details vary by event. But the

key moments that all events share in common are listed below:

    Survivors Lap

Relay starts with a Survivors Lap an inspirational time when survivors are invited to circle the track

together and help everyone celebrate the victories weve achieved over cancer. We also recognize

and celebrate caregivers at Relay For Life. These individuals give their time, love, and support to

friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers who face cancer.

    Luminaria Ceremony

After dark, we honor people who have been touched by cancer and remember loved ones lost to the

disease during the Luminaria Ceremony. Candles are lit inside bags filled with sand, each one

bearing the name of a person touched by cancer, and participants often walk a lap in silence.Learn

    Fight Back Ceremony

Last, there is a Fight Back Ceremony, where we make a personal commitment to save lives by

taking up the fight against cancer. That personal commitment may be to do something as simple as

getting a screening test, quitting smoking, or talking to elected officials about cancer. By taking

action, people are personally taking steps to save lives and fight back against a disease that takes

    too much.

    History of Relay

One person can make a difference. Nowhere is that more evident than with the story of the

American Cancer Society Relay For Life, which began in Tacoma, Washington. In the mid-1980s,

Dr. Gordy Klatt, a Tacoma colorectal surgeon, wanted to enhance the income of his local American

Cancer Society office and to show support for all of his patients who had battled cancer. He decided

to personally raise money for the fight by doing something he enjoyed running marathons.

In May 1985, Dr. Klatt spent a grueling 24 hours circling the track at Baker Stadium at the University

of Puget Sound in Tacoma. He ran for more than 83 miles. That first year, nearly 300 of Dr. Klatt's

friends, family, and patients watched as he ran and walked the course. Throughout the night, friends

donated $25 to run or walk with Dr. Klatt for 30 minutes. His efforts raised $27,000 to fight cancer.

While circling the track those 24 hours, Dr. Klatt thought about how others could take part in his

mission to fight cancer. He envisioned a 24-hour team relay event that could raise more money to

fight cancer. Over the next few months, he pulled together a small committee to plan the first team

relay event, known as the City of Destiny Classic 24-Hour Run Against Cancer.

In 1986, with the help of Pat Flynnnow known as the Mother of Relay 19 teams took part in the

first team Relay event on the track at the historic Stadium Bowl and raised $33,000. An

indescribable spirit prevailed at the track and in the tents that dotted the infield.

comfort, and support from others who have faced cancer or who have lost a loved one to the

disease. You have a chance to meet people in the community who are equally as passionate about

No matter why you take part in Relay, however, one thing is clear: with every step you take, you are

helping the American Cancer Society save lives. With your help, we arent just fighting one type of

cancerwere fighting for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. Each

person who shares the Relay experience can take pride in knowing that they are working to create a

fundraising is performed by teams during the months leading up to the Relay For Life event.

    Student Relays

Over the years, students in Relay communities have shown a passion for fighting cancer. Now,

    Virtual Worlds

Relay For Life fundraising efforts have transcended reality, and gone virtual. Since 2007, American

Cancer Society volunteers have planned, executed and hosted a full-scale Relay For Life experience

in the virtual world, Second Life. Virtual Relay allows people who may not have been able to

participate in other ways a chance to make a difference in the fight against cancer. If you are a

Second Life resident, contact MamaP Beerbaum in-world to learn how you can get involved.

It is with pleasure and appreciation and part of a long-standing tradition that we

recognize the efforts and accomplishments of individuals and communities who helpfuel the mission of the American Cancer Society through Relay For Life. Recognition is

notjust a good thing to do, it is a critical component in how we acknowledge, value,

and thank our volunteers for their time and commitment to making a difference - -

helping to create a world with less cancer and more birthdays. While no award can

adequately recognize all that Relay volunteers achieve in their efforts to eliminate

cancer, the Society offers the Relay For Life Nationwide Awards and Recognition
