4 Relax DECEMBER 2010
word from the committee olivier grawehr
Dear members,
It is my pleasure to provide you with an update on the first
quarter results of our financial year 2011 (FY2011). Yes, it is
already five months since we started our new financial year
on July 1, 2010.
Actually, our results for the first three months have been
quite good. Let me give you some numbers:
Net Result Club (incl. F&B) after Depreciation & Tax Accrual
FY2011 first quarter (July to Sept 2010) $255,070
Budget $151,472
FY2010 first quarter (July to Sept 2009) $197,556
This year’s result does not include the 2010 Oktoberfest
figures. Last year the Oktoberfest was in October, this year it
was in September, so for a fair comparison I have chosen to
show here the FY2011 figures excluding the Oktoberfest.
Reasons for the good result are lower manpower costs,
higher subscription income due to more members, and other
income such as more advertising in Relax, among others.
FYI, the Oktoberfest result was about 10% below last
year’s result. The reasons are: higher band costs, higher
costs for security and traffic management, higher container
and tentage costs and the purchase of signage and banners,
which we can use again next year.
Entrance Fees
We continue to have good interest in our club and many
new members are joining. Actually, we have now achieved
our limit of 1500 members and have a waiting list for new
members. Our entrance fee income for the first three months
of the new FY was more than $400,000. This will help us
to generate the funds needed for the new club building,
which you, dear members approved at the recent AGM
(September).
I am happy to convey this good news to you, happy to
show you that your and our club is doing well financially. Of
course we always need to be prudent in our financial affairs
and manage our cost base well: situations can change
quickly as we have seen all too often in the past. This is what
we want to continue to do—manage our financial affairs well.
I wish you all a relaxing and happy Holiday Season and
wish you all a happy and successful New Year 2011.
See you at the Club in 2011!

word from the club managerheinz iten
Dear members
Just back from trekking the peaks of the Kingdom of Bhutan
with 12 fit and happy members, I am full of new energy and
vigour—ready to tackle the last and busiest month of the
year. You can read about this unforgettable trip later in the
magazine.
Do you also have the impression sometimes that the
clock is running faster nowadays? I’m not sure if this has to
do with age or simply the busy schedules we all have. In any
case dread it, like it or love it, Christmas is around the corner
once again and we will get even busier as we prepare for
the festivities. Personally, I feel great when challenged in this
way: it just brings the best out of us. No worries about the
hours we work, but the years that run away… sigh!
Here at the Swiss Club we have lined up quite a few
events for the festive season: Santa Party, Helper’s Lunch,
Fondue Parties, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day dining
and New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day dining.
We also have a new Arbenz menu, with something
different for the vegetarians and the carnivores. Check it all
out in this issue of Relax.
In the meantime I’d better get going…
I wish you a wonderful festive season,
happiness and good health.
Heinz Iten, CM
The Fränkli will be valid until the 31st of December, 2010.
Please remember to spend any Fränkli you have in your
wallets before the end of the year! From January we will
accept Nets and cashcard payments.
Dear members,
Please note that the Club bylaws clearly state that we do not
welcome domestic helpers on Sundays. It is a particularly busy
day and we reserve all our facilities for members’ use only.
The Club management will organise more checks on
Sundays and will ask errant members to send their helpers
home.
Thank you for your cooperation. The management

As we went to press we received the sad news that Ettore
Pedroni, president of the Swiss Club between 1996 and
1998, passed away at his home in Switzerland on
October 12, 2010. The funeral was held in his beloved
hometown, Indemini, Ticino, on October 22, 2010.
Mr Pedroni’s obituary will be published in the January

moomoo’s bone...
Question: Is it possible to hold teenage parties (with a
disco and fun) at the Club?
Answer from our Banquet Manager, Joyce Uligan:
For sure you can —as long as they are not hooligans!
The story is this: Yesterday was Armageddon and today we
have a real problem! As you can tell from the photos.
Curtains are actually to shut out the light, not to hold
half the dessert buffet! Floors are to step, walk or dance on;
they are not a rubbish heap. We don’t have any landfills in
Singapore any more; we know how to get your leftovers to
the incinerator.
Moomoo has some advice for the parents of such
“teenooligans”: if you approve the fun, the food and the
drinks, please also approve the clean-up/renovation bill the
Club will impose on you.
Happy partying!

De BortoliDe Bortoli Wines is a third generation family wine company
established by Vittorio and Giuseppina De Broil in 1928.
The couple immigrated to Australia from Northern Italy, from
mountain villages at the foothills of the Italian Alps, near the
historic town of Asolo. Their son, Deen De Bortoli, expanded
and consolidated the business created by his parents. Deen’s
children established De Bortoli’s reputation for premium
wines, including the iconic dessert wine Noble One and the
Yarra Valley wines.
De Bortoli’s winemaking philosophy is that great wine
begins in the vineyard. The belief is that sustainable vineyard
practices will deliver exceptional fruit quality to the winery as
well as real environmental benefits. The focus is on careful
site selection, vine maturity and high input viticulture with
a move towards biological farming principles. There is also
increasing awareness of the importance of single vineyard
wines. In the winery, minimal interference, allowing the wine
to ‘make itself’ and the mantra ‘it is harder to do nothing’,
encapsulate this belief. Italian family values passed down
from Vittorio remain core values at De Bortoli: hard work,
generosity of spirit and of sharing good food, good wine and
good times with family and friends.
Winemaker ProfileSteve Webber is the ultimate wine enthusiast. When he
married Leanne De Bortoli in 1989 and moved to the family’s
Yarra Valley vineyard to establish a premium wine brand,
he set out ‘to do something a bit special’. Together Steve
and Leanne built a winery based on their own down-to-earth
hospitality and serious commitment to quality. Steve has
been at the forefront of several industry trends; seeking
greater finesse in his wines without losing flavour.
As he explains, ‘It all starts in the vineyard where we
work to improve flavour levels and finesse while harvesting at
lower sugars and avoiding wines with over-ripe flavours and
high alcohol.’ Winning Australia’s most prestigious trophy,
‘The Jimmy Watson’, in 1997 was a huge highlight for Steve
but he admits to being Pinot Noir obsessed —with the goal of
becoming one of the top producers in the world.
DB Family Sélection Semillon ChardonnayStraw colour with green hues. Creamy vanillin oak complements
lifted citrus and stone fruit aromas. This fresh zesty wine is
balanced by a soft oak mid palate while encompassing quaffable
lemon and stone fruit flavours throughout.
DB Family Selection Shiraz CabernetVibrant purple in colour with crimson hues with lifted plum
and berry aromas. On the palate, it has an intense plum and
spice characters with rounded fresh fruit flavours, soft tannins
and light toasty oak.

In all aspects the performances
were great and I have to say only
this: “Well done, girls!” I want to add
a big thank you to the girls’ mothers,
who helped doing hair and makeup.
Another big thank you goes to you,
Mira, for taking over my lessons during

Welcome to the Kingdom of Bhutan, the ‘Land of the Thunder Dragon’ and other thundering elements.
We wanted to see the Tiger’s Nest in Paro, where the
second Buddha landed on the back of a flying tiger some
700 years ago. Guess what? We started off in Singapore
with a cancelled Tiger flight! If only tigers could fly... With all
our baggage we rushed over to the competition in Terminal
One and, luckily, they had empty seats for our troupe of 16
trekkers from the Swiss Club.
A very short night was spent in Bangkok Airport (arrived
at 00:30, up again at 04:00 to catch Druck Air flight at 06:50)
and, as we learned at the Airport, 70% of Druck Air flights
are not on time. Hence our sightseeing tour of Suvarnabhumi
Airport lasted until 10:30. However, the spectacular approach
to Paro, through the valleys and close to mountain ridges,
made up for our earlier frustration and by the time we landed
we were all in a good mood again.

Bhutan Facts
Bhutan’s history is based on ancient stone implements found
in various regions. It appears that the region was initially
inhabited as early as 2000 BCE. In all probability these early
inhabitants were nomadic herders who lived in the low-lying
areas in winter and moved to the alpine meadows in summer,
a practice still followed today. There are no surviving records,
oral or written, of this period and history per se can only
authenticate history from the seventh century CE. The visit
of Guru Padmasambhava and other Buddhist saints and
scholars from India and Tibet marked the mediaeval period
in Bhutan. Emergence of ruling clans and the development of
arts and architecture were also seen during this period.
Bhutan’s documented history started in the seventh
century when the Tibetan king Songsten Gampo, constructed
its first two Buddhist temples: Kyichu in Paro valley and
Jambay Lhakhang in the Choekhor Valley in Bumthang.
Until this time, as in other parts of the Himalayan region, the
people here followed an animistic region, in this case, Bon or
Ben Choe.
Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, a leader of the Drukpa
sect, came to Bhutan in 17th century. He introduced the dual
system of government and for the first time some degree
of stability was maintained. Bhutan became united under
Drukpa Kagyu Buddhism, and the country was named
‘Druk Yul’, meaning ‘Land of the Thunder Dragon’, and the
inhabitants were called ‘Drukpas’. The period of stability
did not last long. After Ngawang Namgyal’s death, his
successors became victims of intrigues and rivalries. The
instability continued until the early 20th century.
The country’s modern period began with the
establishment of a monarchy in Bhutan. The powerful
Bhutanese Chief, Ugyen Wangchuk, was crowned as the
first hereditary ruler of Bhutan in 1907. The country’s self-
imposed policy of isolation continued till the reign of the third
king, Jigme Dorji Wangchuk. He decided to shed this age-old
policy and opened the country to the outside world, bringing
the country into the international mainstream.
The fauna in Bhutan includes: elephants, tigers, buffalo,
one-horned rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicorns), leopards
(Panthara pardus), gaur, red pandas, langur monkeys, wild
boar, deer, white-collared black bears, yaks (Bos gruniens),
tahr (Hemitragus jemlahicus) and goral (Naemorhedus goral).
25Relax DECEMBER 2010
Brown trout and local fish are found in northern rivers and
lakes, while in the south the rivers are full of masher.
All these and more we wanted to see…..
On the first day, after checking into the small (but very
nice) Hotel Tenzin, built in the traditional Bhutanese way, like
99.9% of all the buildings in Bhutan, we set about sighseeing
in the Paro valley. We visited temples, the National Heritage
Museum, the big Dzong, (temple, District Court and regional
administrative centre in one) and wherever our eyes rested
there were traditional paintings. Some of these paintings are
rather controversial in our corrupt eyes but for the locals a
phallus symbolises luck and strength.
On the second day, we had to gain altitude and set off to
see the Tiger’s Nest at 3000m above sea level. It was a great
day, with breathtaking views of the valleys. Our cameras
were used so much they were almost smoking!
We had to pass the 4000 metre acclimation test on our
third day. This was a five-hour “hilly” walk between 3600
and 4100m and soon the first few Aspirins were taken. We
passed below a macabre hill where the bodies of babies who
died before they reached two years of age were brought and
tied to poles for a ‘sky burial’. This is a local tradition in which
vultures eat the bodies of the dead. We quickly proceeded
downhill, walking past a nunnery which was precariously
glued to the rocks.
Finally we started our seven-day trek towards the
majestic Jomolhary, Bhutan’s highest mountain at 7300m
and … Not again! We were supposed to have 33 mules to
transport all our baggage, tents and food but we counted only
12 hairy beasts. Sonam, our resourceful tour guide, managed
somehow to move everything the first day and by the next
morning the number of stoic ‘transporters’ had doubled. At
the first campsite we were all still fresh and enthusiastic,
ready to play Bhutanese Darts and Swiss Steinstossen. We
also learnt to ‘dance’ around the many horse- and cow-
droppings littering the entire campsite. But the air was crisp,
fresh, cold and healthy; laced with the natural scents of the
region—and what was on the floor. Even here in the wilds
we managed to organise some beers to quench the thirst
resulting from our long walk uphill.

of the article will be published in the January issue.

pumpkin lantern making
At our annual pumpkin lantern making
activity—this year held on the 28th of
October—the children were excited
when they arrived and saw Chef
Frankie in the Jungle Bar with his trays
of pumpkins—all ready to be carved.
The many templates such as
Ghost, Bat, Grinning Jack-O-Lantern
and Friendly Jack-O were already
traced onto the pumpkins so that
the children could focus solely on
the carving. Younger children were
assisted by their mothers and helpers
while the older ones tried their hands at
carving by themselves.
Chef Frankie and his assistant
were ready to give a helping hand,
teaching the kids how to hold the
knife properly—and safely—when
carving. Once carved to their creator’s
satisfaction, the pumpkins were kept
in the chiller to be displayed at the
Hallowe’en Party on Saturday the 31st.

The little vampires and witches came out early this year! It was a spooky experience at the Rifle Lounge when the kids arrived dressed in their costumes for the Hallowe’en Party on Saturday, the 30th of October.
The feast of scary dishes, including Maggot Stew, Fried Spider, Spicy Bat Wings, Mouldy Mashed Potatoes was enjoyed by the kids (and their parents).
Then the Head Witch, Dillah Sa’don (in charge of the games), together with her other Witches: Green Snake Lady, Ghost of Alice in Wonderland and Chinese Ghost, led the children to the squash courts for Mummy Wrap, Gruesome Apple Eating and Eyeball Relay games.
The winning team was obvious—William, Hanna, Sydney, Lisa and Amelie from the WITCH team! They did well in all the games and each one walked away with a pumpkin goody bag.
The Best Dressed Awards went to Jessica Alyssa Vonrueti and Aiden Graf, who each won a buffet voucher courtesy of Ellenborough Market Café at the Swissotel Merchant Court Singapore.

35Relax DECEMBER 2010
December is my favourite month of the year. The mood of Christmas is in the air and it’s a time of shopping, spending time with loved ones and partying!
However it’s also the toughest time of the year to keep in shape. Here are some tips to help you get through this
festive season without feeling too guilty.
• Schedule your exercise time to the mornings. Then, if you somehow miss your morning workout,
you still have a chance to work out in the evening.
• Do a daily cardio workout of 30 to 45 minutes in the morning before breakfast. This will burn
roughly between 250 and 500 calories (depending on intensity). Exercising on an empty
stomach also forces the body to use your stored fats for energy.
• Alternate the cardio intensity/activity daily. One day run for 30 minutes and the next
walk/swim/cycle/play games for 45 minutes.
• Drink 1 to 2 glasses of water 10 to 15 minutes before meals. It has been proven
that this improves results for weight reduction.
• Do not skip meals. Have most of your carbs for breakfast and at lunch: your
carb intake should be the least at dinner and it should come from salads.
But do enjoy the fish/meat/chicken!
• Try to count the number of glasses of alcohol you consume. Only top up
your glass when the glass is empty. And after each glass, drink a glass
of water. (1 for 1 rule.)
• Try to keep to one glass per hour: it will be tough during this
season! However if you drink water in between alcoholic drinks
it will fill your tummy and you may adhere to this ratio better.
• Since in general you will be consuming alcohol more
often this month, you should avoid drinking other sugary
drinks such as juices, soda and cream and sugar
in coffee and tea. (Avoid drinking calories.)
• Kindly take note that one slice of fruity
Christmas Cake contains 400 to 500 calories!
If you need to eat it, eat it for breakfast
rather than in the evening.
• Last but not least, do not try to lose
weight during this season. Enjoy your
Christmas and just look into
maintaining your weight
and fitness levels.
Have a Wonderful Christmas and
a Fantastic New Year!
See you in 2011!

news from the swiss school
Children’s Day is an event widely celebrated around the
world on various dates. This year, at the Swiss School, our
Children’s Day celebration was held in Singapore’s largest
and oldest rainforest—Bukit Timah Nature Reserve. The
weather was sunny and splendid for the outdoor event. By
09:10, children and teachers had reached the Reserve and
soon everyone was gathered at the Visitor’s Centre, ready to
start their nature walk.
Trekking
through the flora
and looking
for fauna via
designated trails,
the children and
teachers saw
butterflies, giant
ants and unique
plant life—then a
Komodo dragon!
As we walked further into the
reserve, we reached “Pulai Hut”
picnic area where a flying fox
(cable slide) was situated. Each
of the children had a chance to
ride on the flying fox and slide to
and fro.
After the rides, the teachers
and children followed the
path that eventually led to
the viewpoint that overlooks
Bukit Timah Hill, which used to be an active quarry site.
The Playgroup classes 1 and 2 enjoyed their picnic at the
viewpoint.
They continued their
journey to “Waringin Hut”
where Little Tots’ children and
parents were having their
picnic.
Surrounding the hut is
a children’s playscape and
the children had a fun-filled
time with the tyre swings,
rope balancing railings and
wooden planks
and a bouncing
platform which
looked like a spider.
Not forgetting the
adventurous half
tunnel slide, rope
ladder and wooden
stairs and planks which encouraged the children to be very
adventurous hikers.
The day ended with everyone walking back to the
visitor’s centre to have their Children’s Day gift—a whistle!

news from the swiss embassymore singaporeans visiting switzerland
Singapore was biggest growth market for Swiss Tourism worldwide between 2005 and 2009
Over the last decade Singapore became one of the most impor-
tant Asian markets for outbound tourists to Switzerland. Despite
its small size, the city-state accounted for 106,260 travellers
to Switzerland in 2009, making it the #5 market in Asia. Only
the well established markets of Japan and Australia, and the
two Asian powerhouses, China and India, are sending more
tourists to Switzerland than Singapore. Articles about travel in
Switzerland have no doubt been very useful instruments in this
tremendous growth.
Zurich was by far the most popular Swiss destination
for Singaporeans. The prominence of the Swiss financial
hub is mainly driven by the strong business connection
between Singapore and Switzerland. Nearly half of all Zurich
visitors from Singapore are business travellers. Lucerne and
Interlaken, both classic leisure travel destinations, are the
next two most popular places.
Top Swiss destinations among Singaporeans (2009)

Top Swiss destinations among all tourists (2009)
1. Zurich 2. Geneva 3. Zermatt 4. Lucerne 5. Basel 6. Davos
Switzerland is also most popular among Singaporeans
seeking snow. In 2009 alone, 53.2% of all visits from the
city state were in the winter half of the year. December,
with 19% of all visitors, is by far the most popular month for
Singaporeans to visit Switzerland.
The rising importance of winter holidays is also an
indication of the more exclusive approach of Singaporeans
visiting Switzerland. As Singaporeans become more wealthy,
travel agencies are facing more demand for ski holidays,
wine tours, watch factory visits and spa vacations.
So next time you’re back don’t be surprised to find more
Singaporeans exploring further and deeper into the peaks
and valleys and nooks and crannies of our beautiful country!

P icturesque Zürich is surrounded by a lake and two rivers. From the central Münster-Brüke, famous landmarks such as the mint-green-spired
Fraumünster, which houses the famous stained glass windows by Marc Chagall, and the twin-towered Grossmünster, catch the eye. e old town is easily the pulse of touristic Zürich, with its charming squares and water fountains.
More prevalent than any other Swiss icon, more than a thousand fountains bless the city with drinking water on the streets. Each fountain has a unique design, ranging from contemporary sculpture to more baroque-style structures with small ponds. On Saturdays, a vendor selling freshly-cooked paella uses a fountain as his personal source of water for business in the old town.
Curious travellers will nd the old town’s twisting alleys and cobblestone paths particularly inviting for exploration. Tourist maps are not well-marked in this area, making the place all the more intriguing. Be especially taken by the square at eatre Neumarkt, the inhabitants of which has the
art of leisure down to a T. Here, a sprawling café adorned with crimson umbrellas positions customers to watch passers by go in and out of interesting shops like the local stationer, milliner and chocolatier.
A short walk away from the old town lies the arterial shopping street, Bahnhofstrasse, which leads from the pier at Bürkli-Platz to the central station Hauptbahnhof. is street is retail heaven in Zürich, home to a wide range of labels. Highlights of the street include Morkur, which specialises in Swiss-made chocolate, a favourite among gi-hunters. ose with a sweet tooth would also appreciate the famous Sprüngli, where macaroons and other desserts in a bewildering array of colours tantalise the
