Missal Translations

On November 27, 2011, the English speaking Church in the USA will begin using a new translation of the prayers used at Mass (The Roman Missal). A series of Questions and Answers on this topic will be posted here to help explain the thinking behind these changes. Please check back weekly. Questions and Answers on the Mass Changes April 17, 2011 - Part 7 of 7

9. Do these changes mean that the old translation was not valid and orthodox? The current translation was approved by the conferences of bishops and confirmed by the Holy See. Until the new text becomes effective, the current translation remains the valid ordinary form

Page 2: Relatives and Friends Masses of the Week Who Need Our …docshare04.docshare.tips/files/5303/53034122.pdf · 12:10 p.m. Tony Molino, req. Mike and Norma ... Basilica of the Sacred

Sunday, April 17, 2011 OUR LADY OF PEACE CHURCH Page 3 translation attempts to address some inadequacies in the present translation by introducing a more elevated style of language and by retaining many poetic texts and scriptural allusions. The current translation fostered the faith of two generations of Catholics and retains a valid place in church history.

10. What opportunities does the new Missal offer the Church? Implementing the new Missal will give the Church an opportunity to take a fresh look at its liturgical practice and to renew its celebration of the Sacred Liturgy, which is the “source and summit” of Christian life (Second Vatican Council, Dogmatic

Constitution on the Church [Lumen Gentium], no. 11). The faithful, encountering the Liturgy anew in the new text, can deepen their sharing in Christ’s sacrifice, offering their lives to the Father as they worship “in Spirit and truth” (Jn 4:23).

Please Help and Make Sandwiches for St. Joseph’s in Elizabeth

On April 19th, we will deliver sandwiches made at home by Our Lady of Peace parishioners to St. Joseph’s Social Service Center. The sandwiches will be used in various community outreach programs. Here is how you can help: Buy a loaf of any kind of bread. Turn the loaf of bread into sandwiches by using your choice of sandwich fillings (e.g., any type of cold cuts, peanut butter & jelly, etc. You can put a little mustard or butter on the bread but no mayo, please!). Put each sandwich into a baggie. Return the wrapped sandwiches to the loaf wrapper and close it up. Tape a piece of paper to the loaf wrapper telling the kind of sandwiches you have made Bring the sandwiches to Our Lady of Peace on the Tuesday morning: from 7:00 a.m. to 8:45 a.m., sandwiches can be left in the vestibule of the church closest to the Rectory and from 9:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., to the lobby of the Parish Hall. At 9:30 a.m., we leave to deliver sandwiches to St. Joseph’s! If you have any questions or you’d like to be put on our monthly reminder call list, please call Marie Russo at 908-918-0779 or Arlene Hluch at 908-604-6674. Thank you for helping!

News from

The Parish Library

Downtown Monks a book by Father Albert Holtz, O.S.B. is being reviewed this week. The book is about a group of Benedictine monks of Newark Abbey who have dedicated themselves to educating and helping teens in Newark and surrounding areas. This inspiring book tells stories about ordinary people coping with life's challenges and frustrations seeking God through the day-to-day chaotic life of the city. The result of the monks’ work has been that many lives have been reshaped and redirected. This book is a quick and

easy read. Review by Kathy

This book can be found on shelf #23 Inspiration. The library, located in the rectory basement, is

open when the rectory is open.

Operation Starfish collection boxes are on the tables in the back of church

should you need one.

There is something each of us can do to help others who are in need. Participate in our Parish-Wide Lenten Project, Operation Starfish. If we, as the Parish of Our Lady of Peace, can donate a collective amount of $3,200, we can sponsor a modest house for a family and perhaps change the direction of their lives. We can give a homeless Haitian family even something more than a home; we can give them a smile . . . . This project is sponsored by Food for the Poor, and you can check them out at www.foodforthepoor.org.

If we are able to collect enough to donate a house, Bread for the World will send us a photo of our sponsored family in front of their new home, and a model of the house.

Any monies received over the amount needed for a home for a Haitian family will be donated to help those recently devastated in Japan.

Please consider participating with your family.

IT’S NEVER TOO EARLY One of the most rewarding things you can do is share your faith with the young people of our parish as a catechist who teaches in our Religious Education Program. Have you thought about it? The requirements are simple: a love for God, love for our Catholic faith, and love for children.

Religious Education sessions for children in grades K – 6 are held on Wednesdays or Thursdays from 3:30 to 4:45 pm. Sessions for grades 7 & 8 are on Wednesday evenings from 7:15 to 8:30 p.m.

Why not give a call to talk about becoming a catechist? No commitment necessary. We’ll tell you what’s involved and answer your

questions! We provide training and the materials you will need. Call Carol Skrocki, Pastoral Associate for Catechetics, at (908)464-8156. It’s a great way to learn more about your faith as you share with the children. Babysitting service is offered for younger children of catechists.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REGISTRATION Religious Education registration packets for September 2011/2012 will be mailed to families of current students on or about April 15. Be sure to look for yours in the mail. Additional packets and information will be on the tables in the back of the church shortly after that date.

All Catholic children attending public schools should attend religious education classes so that they may be well grounded in our faith and be prepared for the sacraments. You may either mail your completed forms to the Catechetical Office or drop them off at our office located in the rectory. It helps us greatly if you register early before June 15. It enables us to take advantage of early order vendor discounts, and to prepare for the fall over the quieter summer months. Do you have a child entering first grade in September? Please don’t delay registering your young one. Our First Reconciliation and Eucharist preparation begins in grade one. Children generally receive First Reconciliation in the second grade and First Communion in the third grade after they have experienced full preparation during those three years.

Call (908)464-8156 or visit the Catechetical Office with any questions.

Kindergarten Sessions Our Lady of Peace parish also offers religious education for kindergarten-aged children at a reduced fee. Kindergarten classes are not ‘required’ but parents often want their children to begin classes at this age. Please call the Catechetical Office at (908)464-8156 for information.

CALLING ALL SPONSORS FOR THE OLP FAIR

Are you a family who would like to sponsor a wheel/game? Do you have a business you are just getting started? Looking for some advertising to maybe get your name out? Do you already have an established business and would

like to advertise for it at the fair?

Sponsoring a wheel/games helps defray the numerous costs of permits and prizes.

The cost to sponsor a wheel is a $125 per sign. We have a professional sign

made for each sponsor. The sign is 11 x 17 inches and states the name of the business, address, and phone number. The sign hangs for all four days of the

fair.

In addition to the sign anyone who sponsors a wheel may leave their literature and business cards inside on a table that we will provide.

Many people come to the fair. It’s a great way to advertise. If you are

interested or have any questions please call the Our Lady of Peace Rectory at 908-464-7600 or call Jim & Debbie Johnston at 908-464-1591.
