REINFORCEMENT THEORY
DEFINITION• An individual’s behavior is a function of its
consequences.
• It is based on “law of effect”
• Individual’s behavior with positive consequences tends to be repeated, but individual’s behavior with negative consequences tends not to be repeated.
A counterpoint to goal setting theory• Takes a behavioristic
approach
Operant Conditioning Theory
Most relevant component of reinforcement theory
B.F SKINNER
• He is a father of operant conditioning theory• But his work was based on Thorndike’s
law of effect.• Skinner introduced a new term into the
Law of Effect - Reinforcement.
Behavior which is reinforced tends to be repeated behavior which is not reinforced tends to die out-or be extinguished.
SOCIAL LEARNING THEORY
Social learning theory is extension of operant conditioningThe view that we can learn through both observation and direct experience is called social learning
It assumes behavior is a function of consequences, also acknowledges the effects of observational learning and perception
