Reiki and Medicine a Circle of Scholars Webinar

About this webinar Reiki students often hear about Reiki practice and its intersectionwith medicine. In this Circle of Scholars Webinar, academic scholarswho conducted research on Reiki practice will discuss Reiki andMedicine from the perspective of their research findings. Taking a broad approach to the notion of medicine, this webinaraddresses the healthcare system as the delivery mechanism formedicine. The scholars discuss various forms of medicine that areconsidered as Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) inmost western healthcare systems (Note: Reiki is one form). In limited cases, countries follow ahealthcare system classified as integrated wherein healing practicesare more often accepted. For the majority, where allopathic (use of drugs to treat symptoms) orthe biomedical approach take priority, healing practices such as

Reiki are often seen as a commodity that is out of place. While thisis beginning to shift in some countries, these are exceptional cases. This panel will address Reiki practice and the intersection of themainstream healthcare system and the challenges and successesthis may present.

Our scholars sharing during this year-long series are: Dori-Michelle Beeler, Ph.D.Dori received her doctorate in medical anthropology fromDurham University in the UK. She wrote an ethnographicstudy of contemporary Reiki practice based on severallineages within the UK. She is a postdoctoral fellow atJohns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Pubic Health. Doricompleted first (Shoden) and second-degree (Okuden) training fromseveral lineages and received her Master initiation in 2018. Robert Fueston, M.L.I.S., M.S.O.M.Robert holds a Master of Library and Information ScienceDegree from the University of South Carolina, a Master ofScience in Oriental Medicine Degree from the SouthwestAcupuncture College, and a Certificate of AdvancedGraduate Study in Library and Information Science fromthe University of South Carolina. Liad Horowitz, MALiad became a Reiki Master in 2001. He received aMasters degree in East Asian Studies from Tel AvivUniversity in Israel. His masters thesis concentrates onthe esoteric roots of Reiki, and during his study hecompared and analyzed Reiki initiations from around theworld to reveal a pattern apparent in all initiations. A doctoral student, helives in Israel. Jojan Jonker, Ph.D.Jojan graduated in Computer Science in 1986. Heworked for almost 20 years for a software house. In 1998,he became Reiki Master in Usui Shiki Ryoho. In 2010, hegraduated in Interreligious Spirituality and in 2016, hetook on his doctoral degree within the field of ReligiousStudies. Justin Stein, Ph.D.Justin wrote his doctoral thesis at the University ofToronto on Hawayo Takata's role in the development ofReiki. He is currently a postdoctoral fellow at BukkyōUniversity in Kyoto. Justin did his first and second degreeof Reiki in 2001 and 2002.

Every moment contains the sacred.

This is a simple insight and it changes the quality of your life.Every moment contains the sacred.

Be aware of love as your eternal essence.

Love is flowing in every cell of your body and your being.

This is more than a mere metaphor.It is the deeper reality of what you are.

Now that your mind has become more quiet,

may you feel this deeper reality.

The mystic, St. John of the Cross says,Listen:

this sacred understanding lies in a single sip of the Divine Essence.Knowing through unknowing, is an act of mercy the Beloved pours on

us.This mercy transcends all thinking.

Knowing by not knowing.

By the grace of not knowing,

let the chakras of your energy body open now, one by one.

Reiki plays a role in the opening of the chakras.When your chakras are open, it gives you easier access to the

absolute reality,and to the subtle, mostly invisible realms of reality.

Here, through this access, healing happens.
