REHOBOTH BAPTIST ASSOCIATION
Volume XLII February 2019 Number 1
OUR EVANGELISM RALLY IS THIS MONTH! I’m looking forward to it as always, and with Steve Cochran preaching and Tom Fineout leading our worship, it will be a great evening of encouragement, challenge, and inspiration!
How is your personal evangelism going? How is it going for your Church?
I looked back at the “stats” for RBA Churches for the last three years, and it was a bit of a concern. Stats are just stats sometimes, and a person can read too much into some numbers, and you never know if the numbers you have are totally accurate. So, I don’t sweat the numbers, but I do like to be aware of possibilities.
2016 2017
41 Churches turned in ACP’s 39 Churches turned in ACP’s 9816 Members in those 41 Churches 9495 Members in those 39 Churches 315 Baptisms 310 Baptisms
2018 37 (ACP’s) 9205 (Members) 166 (Baptisms)
Why are some Churches more evangelistic than others? What is the best way to get a Church to be more evangelistic?
1. Be Intentional – Prayerfully plan the Church’s calendar with evangelism in mind. If you are too busy and the Church calendar is too busy, evangelism will never rise to be a top priority. We are gifted at creating wonderful Church programs that keep us so busy we don’t have time to do the mission of the Church. We either “lean in” or we don’t. Evangelism is not about passion many times, it is about planning!
2. Provide training – If your Church is small, consider working with several Churches in evangelism training each year or every two years. Research done by NAMB in 2014 showed more than 80% of the top baptizing Churches in North America train their leaders at least once a year how to share their faith. This year RBA will offer the “Let’s Talk-One Conversation” training method written by John Meador of FBC, Euless. Be looking for the date and make it a priority!
3. Be an Example – Deacons, Sunday Teachers, Pastors, and Staff need to model the approach you want the congregation to follow. The specific method doesn’t matter nearly as much as the fact that you are modeling personal evangelism in some way. For Preachers/Teachers, it is easier to share the gospel from behind a pulpit or lectern than on the street or in a home. Why? Because we are more comfortable with a scripted presentation than we are with an unpredictable conversation. Leaders in Churches tend to be better talkers than listeners. To be an effective witness, we must learn to ask questions and listen closely.
Are you weak in personal evangelism? Is your Church weak? You can be stronger this year! We need the inspiration and challenge of our Evangelism Rallies, but then we need to follow through with some of the ideas above!
