REHAB THE LAB
Eliminate the Hazard
John Elias – OHG Consulting
We are here to help you
Step 1 – Eliminate the Hazard
• The first choice in any safety program is to eliminate the hazard.– Find safer materials– As long as a hazardous material is present there is
a risk. Only eliminating the hazard will eliminate the risk
– Wait long enough and the risk will be realized.
Excessive Risk Chemicals - Risk Exceeds Educational Utility
Chemical HazardsAcetic Anhydride Explosive potential, corrosiveAcetyl Chloride Corrosive, dangerous fire risk, reacts
violently with water and alcoholAcrylamide Toxic by absorption, suspected
carcinogenAcrylonitrile Flammable, poisonAdipoyl Chloride Corrosive; absorbs through skin,
lachrymatorAluminum Chloride, anhydrous
Water reactive, corrosive
HIGH RISK CHEMICAL PERMIT
• General Information – Chemical, date, teacher
• List of hazards associated with chemical and what controls will you have for them
• Disposal method for waste and leftover materials
• Signatures
Step 2- Reduce the Hazard
• Reduce the amount of hazardous materials as much as is reasonably practicable.
• There is still a hazard, but because the amount of hazardous materials present is small, the risk will be reduced.
• Select the least hazardous materials that will demonstrate the principle and keep amounts to a minimum.
High Risk Chemicals - Only Allow Very Limited Amounts in Storage
Chemical HazardsAcetamide Carcinogen. P-Listed Extremely
HazardousAmmonium Nitrate Powerful oxidizer, reactiveBarium Peroxide Fire and explosion risk with
organic materials, oxidizer, toxic,
Butyric Acid Corrosive; intense stenchCadmium sulfide Highly toxic, carcinogen
Manitoba SamplesMercury, liquid - Toxic heavy metal, carcinogen
