CertificationThe Rehab Center’s occupational therapists are licensed by the state of Nebraska and certified through the American Occupational Association. They have achieved specialty/advanced training in the areas of lymphedema management, driving rehabilitation, functional capacity evaluations, and ergonomic assessment.

Rehab Center physical therapists are all licensed by the state of Nebraska and many have certifications and advanced training in a variety of areas including sports medicine, manual therapy, stroke rehabilitation, aquatic therapy, orthopedics, geriatrics, pediatrics, and wound care. The Rehab Center is the only local clinic with therapists who are specialty certified by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties in Orthopaedics, Pediatrics, and Geriatrics.

Our speech/language pathologists are certified with the American Speech/Language and Hearing Association and the Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation.

Regional West Medical Center’s Cardiac Rehab program is nationally certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) and goes through a rigorous process to meet and exceed the essential standards of care for cardiac rehab patients.

Our Strengths• Education plays a major role in

physical therapy. Our patients are provided with information about their specific condition as well as topics such as posture, body mechanics, and exercise.

• Our testing and rehabilitation equipment is unrivaled in western Nebraska and eastern Wyoming, which allows us to provide the most complete diagnosis and treatment to our patients. Our equipment includes a Balance Master, isokinetic testing and rehabilitation, and ultrasound imaging for rehabilitation.

• Because we are a full-service rehab clinic, our patients can receive multiple therapies in one visit, and have care coordinated by our therapy professionals. You just have to make one phone call and we’ll take care of the rest.

Physical TherapyA physical therapist is an expert in movement. The physical therapists (PTs) at the Rehab Center help patients achieve their goals to move better and maximize their function. These goals may range from activities such as being able to get up from a chair to returning to the basketball court after an injury.

Physical therapists evaluate each patient and determine what problems need to be addressed for the patient to improve and meet their goals. Our therapists use a variety of treatments to improve our patients’ conditions:

• Therapeutic exercise• Manual therapy• Aquatic therapy• Balance training

Acute Rehabilitation UnitAfter a traditional hospital stay, Regional West’s Acute Rehab Unit (ARU) makes the transition from one level of care to another possible without leaving the hospital. Patients benefit from the specialized, intense rehabilitation therapy as well as by being close to family and friends. The focus of the ARU stay is centered on getting the patient back home.

Occupational TherapyOccupational therapists (OTs) use purposeful and meaningful daily activities that fill a person’s time or his or her “occupation.”

This may include:

• Self care• Play or leisure• At work and/or home• Community tasks

OTs often work with patients who have lost independence due to an illness, disease, or trauma. Family education is an important part of the OT’s role.

Speech/Language PathologySpeech/language pathologists recognize that communication is vital to everyone. They assess and treat speech, language, and swallowing disorders. Patients who have suffered a brain injury or tumor, disease, or stroke may work with a speech/language pathologist to regain the ability to speak, put their thoughts into a sentence, or swallow.

Speech pathologists help patients learn how to retrieve the appropriate words,

understand what is being said, and read the written word. We also provide therapy to children whose ability to speak or swallow has been affected by injury or illness. Ours is the only medical speech and language pathology program in the area.

Cardiac Rehab The Cardiac Rehab program emphasizes exercise and education to decrease risk factors and improve the health of patients who have heart or lung disease. Registered nurses, respiratory therapists, registered dieticians, registered pharmacists, physicians, and cardiologists take great care in advancing our patients’ physical fitness in a controlled, safe environment as well as helping them adopt a healthier lifestyle.

In order to help patients reach and maximize their goals, we offer:

• Medically-supervised exercise • Personalized risk factor management • Treatment compliance monitoring• Individualized education

Patients are referred to cardiac rehab following a heart event. Cardiac rehab meets three days a week for approximately one to one and one half hours. Participants gradually increase their activity while nursing staff monitors EKG, heart rate, blood pressure, and exercise tolerance. We also offer weekly education classes designed to help patients learn more about their heart and treatment. Regional West’s dieticians, pharmacists, and other staff will help you make changes to reduce your heart disease.

Outpatient and Community Services Whether transitioning from a hospital stay, home care therapy, skilled nursing facility, or after a physician visit, the Rehab Center’s staff is dedicated to patients’ smooth, uninterrupted rehabilitative care. Outpatient therapists focus on each patient’s need to function in their home and community as well as educate employees at local businesses on injury prevention. In addition, if a high school athlete is injured during a game or event, certified athletic trainers are there to help.

• Physical and occupational therapists use a variety of state-of-the-art equipment and exercise techniques to improve each patient’s ability to live a safe, active, and healthy lifestyle. Through education and individualized recovery programs, patients receive the tools necessary to increase independence, reestablish daily activities, or adjust to their disability.

• Specially-trained therapists allow the Rehab Center to offer programs like post-mastectomy and lymphedema treatment, splinting, and serial casting. The latest in computerized equipment supplements the one-on-one sessions with a therapist. Speech/language pathologists incorporate technology into their treatment plan with a computer lab that allows patients to work independently to improve cognitive skills.

• Our professionals serve as consultants to local employers by evaluating job sites and training workers to prevent injuries while on the job. The Rehab Center’s computerized equipment and work stations are used to simulate work environments for testing and rehabilitation if an injury does occur.

• Certified athletic trainers attend several high school team practices and sporting events in the area. They work with student athletes and coaches by teaching proper conditioning exercises and injury prevention as well as assessing injuries for severity.

Specialty Services• The Rehab Center’s facility boasts a

20 x 36 foot therapeutic pool. The water is maintained at a higher temperature than that of a recreational pool in order to facilitate muscle relaxation and range of motion. Aquatic therapy uses the buoyancy of water to reduce strain on the back and joints, and utilizes the resistance of the water to strengthen muscles. Treatment may be delivered in one-on-one therapy sessions, or in a group aquatic session.

• Our gym offers a wide array of equipment for evaluating and treating patients. This includes computerized equipment, such as the Biodex, Balance Master, and BTE Work Simulator that can be used to measure a patient’s strength, motion, balance, and ability to perform tasks.

• The outdoor mobility courtyard allows patients to practice walking on a variety of different surfaces and grades. Therapists use mobility courtyards to help patients re-learn how to walk on different surfaces, reducing their risk of a fall.
