Regulatory Agencies
Students Will:Be able to identify and describe regulatory agencies in order to analyze the effects they have on the safety of the American public.
Regulate• Define: to control through laws
Regulatory Agency• Definition- Independent Agencies that make rules for certain activities
to protect the people of the US
Federal Communications Commission (FCC)Purpose: Regulates cable TV, AM and FM radio, and satellitesEnforce: Can fine and take away licenses of stations that violate FCC regulations.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)Purpose: To protect the environment and clean up the air and waterEnforce: Can fine and take away licenses of businesses and people that violate EPA regulations
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)Purpose: Works to ensure safety in aviation.Enforce: Responsible for licensing pilots and enforces safety for air traffic
Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)Purpose: Make sure products meet safety standardsEnforce: Can recall products that are dangerous
Federal Trade Commission (FTC)
Purpose: To prevent false advertising and shutdown monopoliesEnforce: FTC can bring companies to court that uses false or misleading advertising
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)Purpose: Protects workers from hazardous conditions at the worksiteEnforce: Will fine or shutdown worksites/plants for code violations
Center for Disease Control
Purpose: Works to control the spread of infectious diseases, injury, and disabilities Enforce: Makes sure research and testing follow established guidelines
Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
Purpose: Protect the public from poorly processed and improperly labeled food and medicineEnforce: Inspect and test food, makeup, legal drugs. If a product does not meet standards it can be forced off of the market
Securities and Exchange CommissionPurpose: Regulates the trading of stocks and bonds to protect economic securityEnforce: Through investigation and use of courts and fines
Federal Bureau of InvestigationPurpose: Investigates violators of federal lawEnforce: Through investigations and arrestsDrug Enforcement Agency Purpose: Investigates the trafficking of illegal drugs in and out of USEnforce: Through investigations and arrests
