Exhibition
Horace Mann Livens, 1862-1936:
In the Light of ‘Van Gogh in Britain’
Showing until 29 September
The opening of the recent ‘Van Gogh in Britain’ exhibition at Tate Britain
stirred enthusiasm amongst Sutton’s Heritage team for a local born artist
who was an associate of Van Gogh, and whose work is also held in the
Tate collection. Born in Croydon in 1862, Horace Mann Livens is today
largely unknown, even in the areas where he lived and worked.
During normal Museum opening hours - FREE, drop in.
Exhibition
The State of Education
August 2019 to Spring 2020
In 1833, the government’s first direct financial involvement in education
began with a grant of £20,000. A relatively small sum, this signified the
beginning of the state’s involvement in building an education system that
we recognise today. We take a look at some of the early developments in
education from this time period and what school life might have looked
like for the teachers and pupils of what is now the London Borough of
Sutton at the time.
During normal Museum opening hours - FREE, drop in.

An Unexpected Treasure:
Tales from the Oldest Senior School in Sutton
Thursday 26 September 19:30
A Friends of Honeywood Museum Event
Sutton High School was founded in 1884 by the Girls’ Day School
Company, whose purpose was to provide a ‘public school’, liberal
education for middle-class girls.
The school is fortunate enough to possess a substantial archive which
includes magazines, log-books, various artefacts and a wealth of
photographs. The archive reveals the school to be a microcosm of national
events such as the two World Wars and the development of women’s
rights. It gives us a unique, sometimes poignant and occasionally
humorous insight into Sutton’s past as will be revealed by Sue James.
Tickets are £5 (£4 Friends) - FREE tea and coffee from 19:00.
Please phone 020 8642 4778 to book.
