BT Openreach - Scam calls Its been reported that residents have been receiving calls from someone purporng to be from the Technical Department for BT Openreach. It appears the scammers have moved on from saying they are Microsoſt and are now using BT Openreach as a way to con people. They start by saying there are problems with the broadband connecon and the speed of connecon. They then want to access your computer remotely, by leading you to a remote access website”, to fix the problem”. BT would not call you as its your responsibility to manage your Wi-Fi access. If you allow remote access your PC could be compromised and you could also end up with a large dent in your bank account. A caller does not know your broadband speed or whether your PC is infected with viruses. Do not ever let an unknown caller remotely access your PC this hands them the keys to your personal data and they can corrupt your soſtware. And never hand over your bank details to an unsolicited caller. If you think youve been a vicm, run a virus scan, alert your bank immediately and contact Acon Fraud hp://www.aconfraud.org.uk/ or by phone on 0300 123 2040 to report the scam. BT Openreach - Scam calls It’s been reported that residents have been receiving calls from someone purporting to be from the Technical Department for BT Openreach.

It appears the scammers have moved on from saying they are Microsoft and are now using BT Openreach as a way to con people. They start by saying there are problems with the broadband connection and the speed of connection. They then want to access your computer remotely, by leading you to a “remote access website”, to “fix the problem”. BT would not call you as it’s your responsibility to manage your Wi-Fi access. If you allow remote access your PC could be compromised and you could also end up with a large dent in your bank account.

A caller does not know your broadband speed or whether your PC is infected with viruses. Do not ever let an unknown caller remotely access your PC – this hands them the keys to your personal data and they can corrupt your software. And never hand over your bank details to an unsolicited caller. If you think you’ve been a victim, run a virus scan, alert your bank immediately and contact Action Fraud http://www.actionfraud.org.uk/ or by phone on 0300 123 2040 to report the scam.

Keeping Safe this winter With colder days and longer nights it’s

important that we take steps to ensure our safety and security during the winter. By following these winter security tips, we can greatly increase the chances of having a safe, happy and secure winter.

Protect against the dark

It gets dark much earlier and criminals like to work in the dark to avoid detection. We can protect ourselves by installing motion-activated lighting. This will help deter criminals. A well-lit property makes it harder for someone to break-in unnoticed.

Prepare for emergencies During the winter months the likelihood of a power outage or other emergency, and their impact, increases. Frozen power lines or fallen trees can leave homes without electricity for long periods. Therefore, have an emergency kit at home for these situations. The kit should include torches, batteries, blankets and other necessary items. Use heating safely Every winter, fires and even deaths are caused by heaters. In England, on average, two fires a day are caused by unsafe heating.

• Keep heaters away from curtains and furniture and never use them for drying clothes

• Be sure to keep anything that can burn (blankets, paper, clothing, etc.) at least three feet away from heating equipment

• Never use hot water bottles in the same bed as an electric blanket, even if the blanket is switched off

• Ensure candles are secured in a proper holder and away from flammable materials.

• Fit a smoke alarm and keep the batteries up to date

PLEASE NOTE It’s very important to report

crimes as otherwise rural communities may not be

given the required level of resourcing they deserve.
